Grand Theft Auto: Mission Pack #1: London 1969

Review by Rugal

"You're brown bread!"

Thanks to the original being so popular, it was thought that a whole manner of GTA add on packs would appear, but strangely only one ever made the light of day: this one.

GTA London is GTA but set in a very different location. It's 1969 and the swinging 60's are coming to an end. But all kinds of work needs doing for various people including death, car jacking and more, and you, as a rookie crook, are the person to do these things.

The game play in GTA London is the same as is in normal GTA. London is a very big city and there are lots of jobs you can get by going to telephones. There are lots of different jobs to get such as blowing up power stations, killing mods and blowing up buses, and if you complete them you'll get lots of points. To complete each mission you have to get a certain amount of points.

However you can't go around killing everybody without the police getting onto you. You still have the same wanted level system as before, and the more crimes you do the more the police will come after you.

Being an add on pack you can't really expect a whole new set of cities to go through. The only city available is London, but there are four different levels set in it with different missions to do in each.

The cars are all taken from the 60s, just given fake names that sound just like the real thing, only slightly different. Different enough to avoid a law suit anyway. There is also a yellow tank you can get in some places which is fun to drive.

All of the weapons are the same as in the original GTA, only with different pictures. There are four types of gun on offer: pistol, machine gun, flame thrower and the all powerful rocket launcher. All of the weapons require ammo to fire though, but if you don't have a gun or run out of ammo you can always punch people.

Graphically things look the same as the last one with the some what poor 2D sprites, although everything looks authentic and the city size of London is impressive.

The sound in GTA London is excellent and possibly the best part of the game. The sound effects especially are the best, with a whole manner of cockney slang spoken such as "You're brown bread!" or "Simpleton!" or "'ello gorgeous!" If you understand this slang you'll be able to understand this game no problem, but the effect may be lost on others.

GTA London also has a network play mode like the last game for playing online of over the local network which can be fun but it isn't something you'll want to play constantly as it gets boring fairly quickly.

Overall this is a nice add on pack and whilst it isn't as good as the original GTA, it's something worth buying if you have completed GTA already. And it's so cheap now it's not a bad game to buy at all.
