Day of Defeat: Source
Review by spartan8000
"A well done and immersive WWII shooter!"
WWII shooter's have been made for a long time, Wolfenstine, Medal of Honor, Call of Duty, the list goes on and on. Gamers have been playing the games longer than the real war. Because of this, most people have come to be bored of the entire genre. So do we really want to fight Nazi Germany again? This game says yes.
Graphics: 9/10
This game uses the source engine which can produce some really nice graphics. Usually this means you have to overclock your computer to play the game. DoD boasts nice visuals that many machines can handle. Usually rag doll physics cause people to look like contortionist dummies, but this game doesn't do that as often. I also like the amount of blood shed, but that's just me. The only thing I don't like is that it's hard to differentiate between Germans and Americans without the floating icon above team members, but it's big enough notice.
Sound: 7/10
This game has some nice audio. The commands you can make soldiers say are a little too soft. Though the bang of the guns shooting are good enough to hear the difference between two weapons. Other effects are nicely made but not the best I've ever heard.
Gameplay: 10/10
This is where the game shines. It's basically an online shooter so don't expect a single-player mode. It strives for realism and that's what you get! Instead of the regular ammo count by number you get a picture of a loaded clip changing depending on how many shells in the magazine you spent. When you fire a weapon the recoil isn't sissy like other games, here you get real recoil. It makes you learn to fire your weapon in short bursts and/or lower your stance. This also has people using the rifle class too so the player amount in each class is realistic too. The online community is also great. These people actually use the voice commands they're provided and the grenades they have. The maps were limited at launch but many new maps and modes were created by fans overtime, and they'll probably continue to make more.
Overall Rating: 8/10
I really enjoyed this game's amount of immersion, it felt like I was really there. I would definitely recommend it to you. And at a low price tag you have no reason to not own it.
