Civilization
Review by The Reichman
"15 years and 3 Civs later... that Spearman is still beating the Tank"
Here we have a game that was released before most GameFAQs users were even born. Yet this is the game that originally sucked away our lives for hours at a time. And while the series moved to better looking and superior sequels, this game still ranks a 10. Can one put down the original Star Wars just because it doesn't look as flashy as Revenge of the Sith? No, of course not. This game, is a classic. To those of us that played it, we'll be telling our children about how we used to play this game "back in our day."
Gameplay 10/10 - simple and easy to get a hang of. While it takes some degree of skill to master and beat it on Emperor, the game is designed that no two playthroughs are the same.
Graphics 9/10 - for 1991, they aren't so bad. It's not like there was some better looking game grabbing our attention for hours on end.
Sound 10/10 - C'mon it was 1991!!! The sound was great! And you can't tell me that when you start playing Civ 4 and the opening theme had a bit of a throwback to the original Civ 1 opening title that you didn't get a little chill.
Replayability 100/10 - I have a copy of Civ for windows that I play in the background while chatting on AIM like some people play solitaire. It never fails to suck me in for hours on end. Even after mastering Civ 2, Civ 3, and Civ 4... Civ 1 always has that special place in my heart. And to use the classic metaphor, this game is like the Spearman, that is still rocking the newer and flashier tanks.
Overall 10/10 - Everyone should own this game, if nothing else just to have it. Just to be able to point to their shelf and say, "I have a copy of Civilization." Just like there are great movies and great books that are remembered for all time, Civilization is one of those games that will always have people speaking about it in awe.
