Ok, there has been a fairly significant format change so be sure to check
for new changes everywhere except the damage with cool down sections.
I have combined the comparisons between the various costs gold/wood/food
into a single table. I've also added more comments for readability.

Thanks go out to Arafel for his ideas on cooldown and for combining
the overall costs.

this document pertaining to actual damage with respect to cooldown over

II. Introduction

I wrote this comparison because I was interested in which
characters dominated the game. I have comparisons of the
stats I view as key to each unit and have sorted them by
their raw value and also by their value with respect to
the unit's cost in gold, wood, and food. Hopefully these
will prove useful to the WarCraft III community. FYI this
is my first FAQ so go easy on me.

IV. Considerations Before Reading

All statistics contained within this document are from the
WarCraft III site at www.battle.net/War3 as of July 17th 2002.
I want to make that perfectly clear so as not to plagiarize.
There may have been some errors while working with the numbers
so if there are any errors contact me and chalk it up to my
being human. There are several sections. The first deals with
just the bare bones unit stats divided by their races. The next
compares the costs of some of the key abilities of each unit.
Finally the damage and cool down are compared to find the best
damage dealers over a set period of time against different armor.
Remember, magic buffs and aura's are NOT taken into account
in any way anywhere in this FAQ.

Chapter 1 Basic Unit Statistics

Section 1.1 Table Legend
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Each unit in Warcraft III has a number of different statistics. This chapter
contains all of the standard racial units and their summons. The following
legend should make each stat pretty clear.
Units = This is the unit's name
Race = This is the unit's race
Level = This is the level of the unit (Note that it
is the same as food…)
Gold = This is the amount of gold it costs for ONE
unit
Wood = This is the amount of wood it costs for ONE
unit
Food = This is the amount of food it costs for ONE
unit
Unit Type = This describes the unit as Mechanical or
Non-Mechanical
Attack Type = Either Normal, Piercing, or Seige. Some
are better against
different types of armor.
Weapon Type = Normal, Artillery, Missle
Armor Type = Small, Medium, Large, Fortified, Hero
Armor = This is the actual measure of a units
Armor, bigger is better
Upgraded Max Armor = The measure of Armor when the unit is fully
upgraded
Ground Attack AVG = This is the average damage a unit can cause
to a ground unit
Upgraded Ground Dam. A = This is the average damage to a ground unit
when fully upgraded
Air Attack AVG = This is the average damage a unit can cause
to an air unit
Upgrade Air. AVG = This is the average damage to an air unit
when fully upgraded
Cooldown = This is a measure of how long a unit must
wait to attack again
Upgraded Max Cool = This is the upgraded cooldown. Shorter and
smaller is better
Full Damage Area = This is the area around impact that would
do full splash damage
.5 Damage Area = This is the area from impact that would do
half damage
.25 Damage Area = This is the area from impact that would do
quarter damage
Hit Points = This is a unit's life force, when it's zero
the unit dies
Upgraded Max HP = This is the amount of life force gained
when fully upgraded
Health Regeneration = This describes when a unit will regenerate.
Mana = This is a unit's magic pool, when zero no
more spells can be cast
Upgraded Max Mana = This is the upgraded amount of mana that
can be held
Mana Regeneration = This describes the rate that Mana
regenerates
Upgraded Mana Regenera = This is the upgraded rate
Minimum Range = This is the closest that a unit can attack,
think catapults
Range = This is the longest that a ranged unit can
attack
Upgraded Max Range = This is the longest a ranged unit can
attack when upgraded
Day Sight = This is how far a unit can see in daylight
Night Sight = This is how far a unit can see in the
darkness
Upgraded Night Sight = This is how far a unit can see in the
darkness when upgraded
Speed AVG = This is the average speed a unit can travel
Upgraded Speed AVG = This the upgraded speed of a unit
Build Time = This is how long it will take to build ONE
unit
Trained At = This is where one can be recruited
Requirements = This is what is required
Zepplin Carries = This is how many of a unit will fit in a
goblin zepplin
Production Hot Key = This is the magic key to press to avoid
clicking on the icon

Chapter 2 Individual Attribute Cost Break Down

Section 2.1 Table Legend and Formula Explaination

Originally this FAQ had a run down of each cost. Now, the costs are all
tallied in one
place and added together using a formula that ranks each unit by cost
efficiency. The
idea here is to find not just the highest stat but the highest stat for the
least cost.
The following legend should explain the details.
Statistic = Will be described for each table
Gold = This is the cost of ONE unit in gold
G. Ratio = This is the gold over the statistic. It shows the
cost of
one stat point in gold. For example, the Morter Squad
costs
210 gold pieces. The Morter Squad has a ground attack
damage
of 67. So, 210/67 = 3.13 which means that each of the
Morter
Squads 67 ground attack damage stat cost 3.13 gold.
In most
cases lower is better.
Wood = This is the cost of ONE unit in wood
W. Ratio = This is the wood over the statistic. It, like the
gold ratio,
shows the cost of one stat point in wood.
Food = This is the cost of ONE unit in food
F. Ratio = Just like the gold and wood ratios, the food ratio is
a measure
of the cost of one stat point in food. The formula is
food over statistic.
Results = This is where the three costs are tallied up. The
trick here is
to figure out how much gold one wood is worth and the
same for
food. Since I have not found any concrete values for
each of the
resources equivalent worth I have come up with my own
formula.
Results = Gold Ratio + (Wood Ratio * 2) + (Food Ratio
* 10)
I chose the multipliers using the following logic. In
an average
game I usually harvest half as much wood as I mine
gold. Well,
except for that orc level where you harvest all the
wood on the
level… :) As for why I chose a multiplier of 10 for
the F. Ratio.
I value food pretty highly because of the low unit cap
that is in
place. I want the best units and the most. I didn't
want the
F. Ratio to dominate the final results though so I
chose 10. It
gives the Food Ratio enough weight to play a decent
role in the
results. If you have a better formula for this,

to me with a good explaination.

Ground Attack is the average damage that a unit can cause to ground units. It

the damage done in a single attack so it does not take attack speed (cool down)

Section 2.4 Base vs Upgraded Ground Attack
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Obviously units which cannot attack ground units will rank the lowest on these
tables. Those being the
Hippogryph and Wisp. Equally obvious should be that a unit that costs nothing
would rank the highest
ordered only by its raw ground damage. That is why the Infernal leads the
list. Of the units that can
be recruited the Catapult wins as the most efficient cost to ground attack
damage. In fact all of the
seige units rank highly. Keep in mind that despite their high ranking they are
slow attackers and siege
attackers. Other items of interest include the fully upgraded Archer moving up
two ranks and that the
night elves seem to have more units at the bottom of the list than the top.

Once again, if a unit cannot strike a flying creature it will rank poorly on
this list. Of the units
that can strike the air the Kodo Beast is pulling up the rear. It is much more
expensive to use Kodo's
as AA especially when compared to upgraded units. The water elemental's lead
the list because they cost
virtually nothing to make. The Gargoyle's and Hippogryph's lead the list in
recruitable units.

Not as a big surprise, the siege units are the slowest attackers. The wisp
doesn't count as any sort of
attacker so the fastest attacker for its cost is the Spirit Wolf. Notice that
the fastest recruitable
unit is the Hippogryph, a unit that cannot attack the ground. Ghouls and
Militia also top the charts
but I don't think I'd sell all of my Taurens yet. The cooldown tables above
should make a little more
sense than below.

There are not too many units that can get an upgrade to range but the Archer
and the Rifleman
gain a lot of spots on the list after they are upgraded. The Water Elementals
are free so they
automatically lead the list. However, the Priest is initially the best buy if
range is your bag.
After upgrading the Archer storms to the top of the non-summoned units.
