World of Warcraft is one of the better games playable over the internet, and
quite possibly the best MMORPG available (though since I've not played any
others, even in brief, that last comment should be taken with a grain of salt).
And now, with the Burning Crusade, the world of Warcraft has now expanded...to
TWO worlds! In the shattered remnants of Draenor, now known as Outland, there
are new recipes to learn, and new herbs to pick as well.
My primary character, a human mage named Maradis on server Zul'jin, makes
extensive use of the alchemy and herbalism professions. This guide will share
some of the basics for these two professions, and a long list of what you can
make when these two professions are combined.
At the very least, read the Frequently Asked Questions section before emailing
me anything. And try to read the rest of the guide as well. You'll save both
you and me a lot of trouble.
Thanks in advance to Thartos (Zul'jin server), Wyrmrider (Stormreaver server),
and many other contributors for their input! I will reference your names
throughout this guide.

started on the Alchemy/Herbalism Basics section.
Version 0.20 (1/19/2006): More or less finished the Basics section. I have the
feeling, though, that I'm missing something there. Began the Herbs list.
Version 0.30 (1/26/2006): Herbs list is proceeding. Finished the list of
Trainers, and Herbs By Zone as well.
Version 0.35 (1/30/2006): Herbs list completed. Started header in Alchemy
section. Minor adjustments throughout.
Version 0.40 (1/31/2006): Started on Alchemy list. This'll take a while, I
think.
Version 0.50 (2/2/2006): Alchemy list is proceeding. Have reached Expert Level
recipes. Added a FAQs section.
Version 0.60 (2/3/2006): Alchemy list continuing. Minor adjustments throughout
the guide.
Version 0.70 (2/6/2006): Yes, progress is slow, but I have now reached the
Artisan alchemy section.
Version 0.80 (2/8/2006): Alchemy list mostly done, up to skill level 285. Some
adjustments throughout the guide.
Version 0.90 (2/9/2006): Alchemy list finished. Minor corrections and
adjustments. Guide is mostly done; will send to GameFAQs after its content
is checked for errors.
Version 0.91 (2/10/2006): Added Bloodvine to Herbalism section. Expanded my
Legal section to allow my guild to host the file. More corrections and
adjustments.
Version 0.92 (2/13/2006): Added zone levels to the Herbs By Zone section.
Created a new section, "Quickest Picks", which outlines the lowest-level
zones an herb can be found.
Version 1.00 (2/22/2006): Finally got around to finishing this update. Added
some contributions by Thartos. Updated the Legal section again. Made a
few adjustments and revisions to the guide. Submitted guide to GameFAQs
(at last).
Version 1.01 (3/13/2006): A few minor changes. Not submitted to GameFAQs.
Version 1.10 (4/29/2006): A recent flood of information has prompted me to add
quite a bit to this guide. Thanks to Wyrmrider of Stormreaver, and Dremoon
of Kargath for their contributions. Other changes made, bringing the guide
up-to-date with Blizzard's v1.10 of this great game.
Version 1.10a (6/18/2006): Added Gurubashi Mojo Madness to Alchemy section.
Various revisions and adjustments to the guide of course. (I've decided to
keep my guide's version in sync with the version of the game.)
Version 1.12 (10/23/2006): A few corrections and revisions. Patch 1.11 has
caused some changes to be made to the function of the Troll's Blood
potions, confirmed by my own testing. My apologies for the delay, since
it's now patch 1.12. Also added Herb Bags section.
Version 2.00a (4/19/2007): Burning Crusade has been out for a few months now,
and we have a whole host of new herbs and alchemy recipes. Updated with
some of the information I currently have; more to come later.
Version 2.00b (4/20/2007): Renamed "Special Thanks/Legal Info" to "The End of
the Guide", and split it into the subsections "Special Thanks" and "Legal
Info". Added more herbs.
Version 2.00c (4/26/2007): Finished the herbs section and revisions to some of
the later sections of the guide. Added recipe types to the alchemy recipes
section; that section is now the one in progress.
Version 2.00d (4/26/2007): Added the Contacts section, as well as information
on alchemical Specializations. More recipes added as well.
Version 2.00e (5/7/2007): Received contributions from a couple of WoW players.
Also, finished the recipes section. Unfortunately, patch 2.1 is gonna
change this guide dramatically pretty darned soon....
Version 2.01 (6/4/2007): Guide updated with the changes introduced by patch
2.1. Quite a few of the elixirs have been affected significantly, and so
have all the Flasks.
Version 2.02 (9/4/2007): Patch 2.2 is out, and a few things have changed.
Also, by request, more information has been added to the guide.
Version 2.03 (2/3/2007): It's been too long since I last updated. Patch 2.3.3
is out, and there have been quite a few changes in the interim.
Version 2.03b (2/13/2007): Found and corrected a few errors.

* II. FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS [FAQS] *
*****************************************
OK, here I'm going to start off with some questions I *think* I'll be asked
early and often. If you have a question, look here first. If it's not
answered here or in the remainder of the guide, THEN email me. If I think you
have a valid question, I will reply with my best answer (it may be "I don't
know", but I'll give you an answer if I have one), and I may post your question
to the guide with your username.
Q: What if I want to ask you a question?
A: Before you ask, please read through this FAQ to make sure that the question
you have is not yet answered. If it isn't, read the "dos and don'ts"
section in the "Contact" section of my guide. As you might have guessed,
the aforementioned "Contact" section is where you can find my contact info.
Q: Hey, you missed this bit of info...[description of information]
A: Thank you. I will include that in my guide, citing you as a source.
Q: Well, I checked, and it turns out this bit of info was incorrect; here's
what it should be...[description of mistake and correction]
A: Yes, I expect to make mistakes in this guide. I'll try my best to avoid
them, but in a guide the size of this one, mistakes will be inevitable. My
first duty is to be as correct in my information as possible, and if anyone
finds a mistake in this guide, I'll do my best to correct it, citing any
external sources. Thank you.
Q: D00d, j00r FAQ suxx0rz!
A: That's not a question. Nor is it a meaningful contribution. And please use
proper English. (Also, a little civility never hurt anyone.) Thank you.
Q: How do I make [alchemy product]?
A: Look for the item in the Lists section. If it's not there, it's probably
not an herbalism or alchemy item. (If it *is*, and it isn't in this guide,
I will try to verify that it is a true recipe, and if it is, I will add it.)
Q: Where do I find [name of herb]?
A: Lists section again. The entry for the herb should include a list of the
zones where you find the herb, as well a general placement for each herb (in
open fields, near trees, etc.). Some herbs can also be found in instances
(which I now list) or special circumstances (which I may or may not list).
Q: Where's the best place to find [name of herb]?
A: In many cases I won't have an answer for you. All I can do is to ask you to
check the "look for it" areas in the listed zones, and the Quickest Picks
section later in the guide. Sometimes I can give you a pointer (I generally
go to Wetlands if I want to find a lot of both Kingsblood and Liferoot at
once for Greater Healing Potion), but I can only do so much. Also, Quickest
Picks may give the *earliest* zone for getting an herb, but not the best--
stranglekelp can be found in Darkshore and Westfall, but the best place to
gather it is generally held to be the Wetlands. (I agree with that
assessment.)
Q: CONGRATULATIONS! YOU MAY BE OUR NEXT WINNER!
A: What the...?!? Dammit, I hate spammers. *checkmarks the message, clicks
Spam button* There we go.
Q: How do I train in alchemy beyond skill level 150?
A: Each faction has an Artisan Alchemist in a major city. For Alliance, in
Darnassus. For Horde, the Undercity. See Trainers for their specific
locations.
Q: What about skill level 225?
A: Again, each faction has a Master Alchemist, usually in a smaller outpost in
a mid-to-high level zone. See the Trainers section again.
Q: And skill level 300?
A: Grand Master Alchemists can be found in Outland only, so you need the
Burning Crusade expansion pack. There is one for each faction in Hellfire
Peninsula, and a neutral trainer in Shattrath. See the Trainers section, as
before.
Q: You said that [vendor] sells [recipe], and (s)he doesn't! You liar!
A: Two possibilities here. One is that the recipe is limited supply, and that
someone recently bought it. (If that is the case, the recipe won't show up
at all, even as "sold out", and it may take a while for the recipe to show
up again--typically 30 minutes, but sometimes much longer.) The other is
that I have some faulty information. If you can verify that I *have* faulty
information (i.e. it turns out someone else sells a certain recipe), please
let me know. More likely, though, it's a case of a limited supply recipe
being sold out.
Q: Come on! That vendor never has the recipe when I visit him/her!
A: See the previous question. If you're having trouble getting a particular
limited-supply recipe, you might try to get it during a quiet time--early in
the morning any day, or during normal work hours on weekdays, server time.
Of course, someone else might try the same thing and get to the recipe
before you; I can't control when that happens. As I said before, if it
turns out I have faulty data in this guide, please make sure that you send
me a correction.
Q: JOIN OUR GUILD! / Sin my gild chartr plz!
A: I'm IN a guild, and quite happy with it, thank you. *marks as spam*
Q: Where is Bernard the Mixer? I looked for him all over Westfall, and he
isn't there! I really need something he has!
A: I take it you saw his name in Thottbot somewhere. Sorry to disappoint you,
but Bernard the Mixer does not exist in the actual game. I have heard that
he was a "deus ex bartender" of potions and recipes in the beta, but it's
also possible he was manually contributed to Thottbot by a user of the same
name. You won't ever find him in the actual game, because he doesn't exist.
Q: No, really, where is he?
A: HE. DOES. NOT. EXIST. So stop asking.
Q: But I really need something he has! How am I gonna get it?
A: Look at the other possibilities. Everything he "has" can be acquired by
some other means, such as another vendor, or a quest reward, or as a random
drop from an enemy. Unfortunately, some of the items drop only rarely. You
may be better off looking in an auction house.
Q: Dammit, tell me RIGHT NOW where to find Bern--
A: *marks as spam* I said to stop. Obviously you didn't listen.
Q: Which is the best specialization for alchemists?
A: I can't really answer that question. Suffice to say, each specialization
has its own advantages and disadvantages, outlined later in the guide. If
you decide your current specialization isn't working for you, you can get it
switched for 100g by talking to the right person.
Q: What's this about Battle and Guardian elixirs?
A: Elixirs are, for the most part, split between two categories. Some that
are used for offensive purposes will generally be considered Battle elixirs,
while those that give some passive bonus oriented toward survival or
longevity will be considered Guardian elixirs. A person cannot have more
than one Battle elixir active at a time, nor more than one Guardian elixir
active at a time. A few elixirs with certain minor effects are considered
"typeless" elixirs and will not interfere with the functions of either
Battle or Guardian elixirs. Nor will they interfere with other "typeless"
elixirs.
Q: What about Flasks?
A: Flasks take up both the Guardian and Battle elixir slots when used, so it's
an either/or proposition with Flasks. The advantage of Flasks is that they
persist through death, so they're good if you expect to die a lot.
Q: What happens if I switch away from a profession and then switch back? Do I
go from where I left off, or do I have to start over from 1? (thanks
Mathias)
A: You start over from 1, and lose all recipes that you learned.
Q: Please! Let me host your guide!
A: If I haven't already granted permission, I'm sorry to say that you probably
won't get it. And if you host the guide without my *explicit* and *stated*
consent, you are in violation of US copyright law. (Posting a copy of my
guide with the "consent" added to it is not only a copyright violation, it
is forgery.) As of now, the ONLY sites that may carry this guide are
GameFAQs and my guild's website. And GameFAQs will *always* carry the
latest version.
Q: Awwww, why can't I?
A: Several reasons which I will not state here. Suffice to say, it is not a
policy I make exceptions for. But, while I restrict those who can *host*
this guide, it is permissible to link to the World of Warcraft page
on GameFAQs, with instructions to click on my guide. (GameFAQs forbids
hotlinking the documents themselves, last I checked.) The World of Warcraft
FAQs and Guides page is at:
http://www.gamefaqs.com/computer/doswin/game/534914.html
Q: Aren't you basically talking to yourself?
A: Maybe. But too much sanity can be a bad thing, I say.
Q: GOOBLE GABBLE GORK!
A: Then again...get back in the crate, Sels.

* III. ALCHEMY/HERBALISM BASICS [BASICS] *
******************************************
Herbalism and Alchemy go together so naturally, it'd be rather foolish to have
either of them by themselves. There can be some justification for Herbalism
to not be accompanied by Alchemy (you go for a couple of "moneymaker"
professions such as Herbalism and Skinning, where you collect the items and
sell them later), but Alchemy without the supporting Herbalism skill is
unnecessarily difficult (and almost always very expensive).
===============================
A. Profession Basics [BAS_PROF]
===============================
From the get-go, you'll be able to perform some of the more basic skills. For
example, a just-starting herbalist can harvest from silverleaf and peacebloom
plants. Similarly, a novice alchemist can mix some of the weaker (and more
basic) potions, such as Minor Healing. As you make use of these skills, they
will increase.
As a character increases his/her skill in his profession, some tasks become
more and more routine. Giving an example for alchemists: Minor healing potions
will add to one's skill every time one makes them if the alchemist is
inexperienced, but a somewhat more experienced alchemist will only have a
chance to increase his/her skill from making potions, and by the time the
alchemist has hit Expert level, making the minor healing potion will no longer
add to his/her skill at all.
Also, at certain points, the character will need to be instructed by various
trainers in order to advance further in the skill. All herbalism trainers can
always train your character to Artisan level (as long as your herbalist has the
proper skill and enough money), and you need only the proper skill in Herbalism
to pick an herb from the ground.
Alchemy trainers are not so simple. You'll receive your initial instruction
from a Journeyman Alchemist, who'll give you Apprentice level skill and sell
you various recipes that you can use to make new potions. Beyond a certain
point, you'll need to visit an Expert Alchemist to increase your skill (and
potion library) beyond the lower levels. After that, you visit an Artisan
Alchemist, a Master Alchemist, and finally a Grand Master Alchemist (expansion
only).
There is exactly one Artisan Alchemist for each faction, and each is located in
a major city. There is also one Master Alchemist for each faction, and each is
located in an outpost in a higher-level area. The locations and names of each
are listed later in this guide.
You can advance to the next level of skill as long as you are within 25 skill
points of maxing out your current skill. (Skill ceilings are multiples of 75.)
For example, if your current skill in alchemy is 50, and you're an Apprentice
level alchemist (caps at 75), you can learn Journeyman level alchemy from an
Expert Alchemist. (If 50 doesn't work, try 51.)
A quick table below--Max means the maximum skill level you can achieve at the
current rank, and Train Next Rank shows the window of skill levels where you
can begin training for the next rank. The level requirements, which are the
minimum level required to train the *current* rank, may or may not apply to
herbalism.
Current Rank: Max: Level Req. Train Next Rank:
--------------------------------------------------------
Apprentice 75 5 50 - 75
Journeyman 150 10 125 - 150
Expert 225 20 200 - 225
Artisan 300 35 275 - 300 *
Master 375 50 Cannot train
* I don't know what the requirement is to train Master rank. It may be that it
cannot be trained until skill level 300.
You can unlearn a profession you learn, but if you change your mind later, you
will restart the profession at the lowest level, and you will lose any and all
recipes you learned while you knew the profession. Choose with care!
=================================
B. Herbalism: A Primer [PRI_HERB]
=================================
One would think that it'd be easy to just rip those weeds out of the ground
and put the contents in your 12-slot Herb Pouch (did someone get the idea for
that one WoW fancomic from my preceding statement?), but it's really not that
simple. Herbalists know what parts of the plant are useful and what parts are
not, and how to tell the difference. For example, the small blossoms on a
silverleaf plant may be pretty, but they aren't at all useful to an alchemist.
The leaves, however, are. Meanwhile, on a peacebloom plant, the blossoms *are*
useful. Being able to tell the difference allows for greater care in
harvesting the herbs, and also allows the herbalist to store only the useful
parts of the plant in their inventory. It also decreases the chance that the
herbalist will damage the plant in the process of culling the herbs, making the
herbs themselves useless.
1. Training Herbalism [HERB_TRN]
--------------------------------
Herbalism trainers can be found all over the world. Most notably, there are
herbalists in the major cities (Darnassus, Ironforge, Orgrimmar, Stormwind,
Thunder Bluff, and the Undercity, in alphabetical order), though some can be
found in some of the smaller towns as well.
All herbalism trainers can teach up to Artisan level, so you should have an
easy time of reaching 300. For Master level, you’ll need to go to Outland
(and you’ll need the expansion to do that, obviously).
Tauren gain a bonus of 15 to Herbalism. That means if they take up the
profession, they start with a skill level of 16 instead of 1, and all the level
caps for Herbalism (but not the skill required to train the next rank) are
increased by 15. So for a Tauren's herbalism skills, use the following table
(the Level Requirement may or may not apply here):
Current Rank: Max: Level Req. Train Next Rank:
--------------------------------------------------------
Apprentice 90 5 50 - 90
Journeyman 165 10 125 - 165
Expert 240 20 200 - 240
Artisan 315 35 275 - 315 **
Master 390* 50 Cannot train
* Tauren can get up to level 390 in Herbalism, but no herbs require higher than
level 375 to pick. This increased skill, however, may decrease the chance of
a "failed" picking of an herb. (Not entirely sure about it, so don't hold me
to it.) Since herbs in Burning Crusade require more than 300 to pick, this
racial gives Tauren a head start in that regard.
** Again, it may be that a skill level of 300 is required to train Master rank.
2. Finding Herbs [HERB_FND]
---------------------------
Using your herbalism skill is quite easy. First of all, you'll have a new
ability: "Find Herbs". Turning this on will allow you to spot the locations of
nearby herbs on the mini-map. (You can't have this and another "tracking"
ability on at the same time, such as the Dwarves' "Find Treasure" skill.) One
advantage of "Find Herbs" is that you can use it during certain quests to
detect where certain plants (quest items) can be picked. (The daily cooking
quest for Mana Berries is one such example.)
3. Getting Herbs [HERB_GET]
---------------------------
Once you locate an herb, walk up to it and right-click on it. Your character
will attempt to pick it. If your skill is too low, the game will let you know.
There is also a chance you will fail to pick it when you try (especially if
your skill level is fairly close to the required level for that plant), but the
plant will remain for you to try again. Once you successfully pick an herb and
grab the "looted" herbs, the plant will disappear.
A new feature of Herbalism, introduced in the Burning Crusade, allows an
herbalist to "skin" certain creatures, most notably the bog giants of
Zangarmarsh (though there are other creatures that can also be skinned in this
manner). This allows an herbalist to harvest resources in ways that he/she
couldn’t before.
===============================
C. Alchemy: A Primer [PRI_ALCH]
===============================
Even though the difficulties of culling useful herbs weren't apparent at first,
the skill needed to create potions of great power is somewhat more obvious.
Even if one knows the ingredients needed to create a potion (and even the
proper amounts needed), actually preparing the potion is more difficult--the
order of mixing is very important, and so is the preparation of those herbs for
mixing. After all, two earthroot sprigs and one peacebloom blossom can create
either a weak troll's blood potion or an elixir of minor fortitude, depending
on how it's prepared!
1. Starting Out [ALCH_ST]
-------------------------
When you learn Apprentice level alchemy from a Journeyman Alchemist, you'll
start with 1 in the skill, as well as a couple weak alchemy recipes (Minor
Healing Potion, Elixir of Minor Defense). You'll be able to buy many new
recipes from the trainer as you become more proficient.
There are several items you'll need in order to mix your potions. Fortunately,
they're not often hard to find, and early on they're not too expensive.
- Herbs. If you have Herbalism (and you SHOULD have it; I cannot stress this
enough), you can pluck these from various plants you'll find around Azeroth.
If not...either your wallet will drain fast, or someone will be spending a
lot of time on your behalf. Dremoon points out that it's also possible to
get herbs via the Morrowgrain quests, but this is also rather expensive, and
worth it only if one is also trying to get reputation with Darnassus or
Thunder Bluff, or needs the Morrowgrain for something else (such as an herb
bag).
- Vials. For potions, these are vital. There are four kinds of vials: Empty,
Leaded, Crystal, and Imbued. You MUST have the proper vial with you in order
to mix a potion (you can't use a Leaded vial in place of an Empty vial, and
vice versa).
- Oils. You can extract some vital oils from certain fish (none of them are
edible normally). These oils can, in turn, be used to create other potions.
- Other reagents. Sometimes you'll require other reagents, such as metal ore
or bars, or fangs or claws dropped by certain animals.
Later on, you'll be able to Transmute metals and certain elemental essences
from one thing to another--the original definition of an alchemist, if you must
know. To do this, you'll need:
- The item(s) being transmuted. Naturally, you couldn't transmute an item that
wasn't there, now could you? This item will be consumed by the process.
- Philosophers' Stone. This catalyst will require a long cooldown after you
use it, but generally the items it makes are worth it. Especially
transmuting Thorium to Arcanite. You can only have one Philosophers' Stone,
and even if you did, the cooldown would apply to all of your Philosophers'
Stones. Fortunately, the Stone is not consumed by the transmuting process
and can be used again after the cooldown ends.
2. Supporting Professions [ALCH_SUP]
------------------------------------
There are several professions that can support an Alchemist in his trade, but
only two that I really recommend. Mining and Enchanting help in a few cases,
but Herbalism trumps them both--virtually none of the recipes (except for the
Transmute recipes) fail to use herbs. There is a secondary profession/skill
that gives a minor boost to an Alchemist, however, and I will cover it.
Herbalism
---------
An Alchemist without Herbalism is like a plane without an engine. You can put
a lot of effort into pulling it up to the top of a plateau, have someone push
it off the side, and glide for some distance under the force of gravity and the
lift from the wings, but eventually you're going to hit the ground, and
probably hit it fairly hard. And even if you manage a proper landing, you have
to push the plane back to the top of the cliff in order to get it to "fly"
again.
Seriously, herbs are so instrumental to virtually all of your alchemy recipes,
to not have herbalism is to limit yourself severely. You won't get a recipe
involving a Mining product until you hit skill level 225, and you won't get one
for Enchanting until you hit skill level 290! And the recipes requiring herbs
outnumber the ones needing a product of Mining or Enchanting by such a
ridiculous amount, to pick anything but Herbalism as your second primary trade
would be nothing short of foolishness. I would not recommend a primary trade
for an alchemist other than Herbalism. Even having an alternate character
"feeding" herbs to a non-Herbalism alchemist is rather inefficient. Dremoon
points out that it's possible to get many herbs via the repeatable Morrowgrain
quests, but this still costs quite a bit of money over time, and there's no
guarantee that you'll get the herbs you need with any given use of the seeds.
Herbalism is such a vital part of alchemy that if you pair the two professions,
you'll find that only rarely will you need to ask someone else to help you to
craft a reagent you need for a recipe you need to create. This is because many
of the alchemy recipes in the game require only herbs and vials, and most of
the rest require creature drops that are fairly easy to get. Very few recipes
really require outside help to obtain (such as the Philosophers' Stone).
An herbalist/alchemist is fairly independent and rarely needs help to craft
things...but many other classes will need herbs, potions/elixirs, or transmuted
materials in order to craft their materials.
Fishing
-------
Personally, I recommend that you grab all three secondary professions. Why?
Because you can, and because they're all somewhat useful to all characters.
(Exception: First Aid isn't that useful to a Tailor, because both use the same
kinds of cloth.)
Fishing is actually fairly useful to an alchemist, because it's by fishing that
you can acquire some reagents that may be useful to you or other professions.
Oily Blackmouth, Firefin Snapper, and Stonescale Eel all can have their
precious oils extracted from them by an alchemist. In turn, you can use those
oils either as reagents in your potions, or as reagents that are used by other
professions. (Fire Oil, for example, is used in a few Tailoring patterns.)
The fish that you use for alchemy can sometimes be found swimming in schools,
giving you a far greater chance of landing the fish that you're looking for.
They can also be found in level 10+ fishing areas randomly (L20+ for Firefin
Snapper, L40+ for Stonescale Eel).
3. Specializations [ALCH_BIG]
-----------------------------
OK, so you want to be more productive as an alchemist? Well, you can take one
of three Specializations to increase your production in one of three
categories:
- Potions
- Elixirs (and Flasks)
- Transmutes
To learn a Specialization, a character must be level 68 and have an alchemy
skill of 325. You must also complete the quest for that Specialization. As
of Patch 2.1, it is possible to switch specializations for a sum of 100 gold,
but only if you have already learned one specialization.
These Specializations allow you a chance to produce more than one of a certain
class of alchemy recipe when you use it. The chance of it proccing seems to be
around 20%, or one in five, and when it does proc, it can produce from 1 to 4
extra of whatever you're trying to make or transmute.
For example, let's say that an alchemist has Potion Specialization. When that
alchemist produces, say, Super Healing Potions, and has the materials for five.
Since the proc is random, there's a chance that the alchemist could produce
exactly five, but there's also a chance (albeit very, VERY unlikely) that the
alchemist could produce as many as 25 potions from the materials! Likely the
alchemist will produce about six potions from the materials he has, which can
really add up over the long haul.
Since Specializations don't *reduce* your ability to create recipes, it's
highly recommended that you do a specialization quest. If you feel you want to
switch later, it'll cost you about 100g, but you won't have to do another
quest.
Master of Potions
-----------------
Since virtually everyone uses some kind of healing or mana potions, this is a
fairly safe specialization to choose. It can also be used to create various
other potions, including the protection potions and free/living action potions.
(Mageblood and Troll's Blood potions are actually elixirs, so they don't fall
under this category.)
In order to become a Master of Potions, you need to get the Master of Potions
quest from Lauranna Thar'well in Cenarion Refuge (Zangarmarsh). The quest
requires you to obtain the Botanist's Field Guide from High Botanist Freywinn
in Tempest Keep (the Botanica). You also need to make 5 Super Healing Potions,
5 Super Mana Potions, and 5 Major Dreamless Sleep Potions.
Master of Elixirs
-----------------
Not everyone is going to be using a great deal of elixirs, but some people are
willing to buy them. And if you're in a guild, some people will be wanting to
use the expensive Flasks (which are also affected by this Specialization!) to
boost their abilities relatively risk-free. The chance to proc while making
Flasks may be reason enough to take this Specialization. Starting with Patch
2.1, elixirs are placed into different categories, making them less useful
since only one per category will be allowed. (And Flasks use up both of the
available categories.)
In order to become a Master of Elixirs, you need to get the Master of Elixirs
quest from Lorokeem in Shattrath City. (He's also the master alchemist trainer
in that city.) The quest requires you to get 10 Essence of Infinity from the
rift-keepers in the Black Morass. You also need to bring 5 Elixirs of Major
Defense, 5 Elixirs of Mastery, and 5 Elixirs of Major Agility.
Master of Transmutation
-----------------------
If you make a good deal of money through transmuting items, then you may be
tempted to take this Specialization. After all, there's a cooldown
restriction, and anything that speeds up the process/increases productivity has
to be good, right?
Well, it depends. Some people aren't so quick to laud this Specialization,
simply *because* the cooldown restriction limits how often it will be used.
Ultimately, it's up to the alchemist to decide.
In order to become a Master of Transmutation, you have to bring 4 Primal Might
to Zarevhi in the Stormspire (Netherstorm), then accept and complete the quest
he has to offer. That's it. However, it'll take some time (and/or money) to
get this quest done, since Primal Might requires five primal esssences each,
and there are four transmutations to be done.

* IV. LISTS [LISTS] *
*********************
Ah, here we come to the main potion (sorry, portion) of the guide--by far the
longest of the sections, and the most important to alchemists (and herbalists)
who have some experience with the game.
================
A. Herbs [HERBS]
================
The following format will be used to list the herbs:
Herb Name
---------
Skill Level: The skill level required to pick the herb.
Zones Found: The general zones where the herb is known to grow.
Instances Found: Dungeon instances where the herb tends to grow. (Thanks to
Wyrmrider for convincing me to add this.)
Look For It: The specific locations within a zone where the herb tends to grow.
Used In:
A complete list of alchemy recipes that make use of the herb, including how
much of the herb is used (leftmost number), and what skill level is
required to make the potion (rightmost number in parentheses):
1 - Herbalism Description Potion .......... (999)
1 - Alchemy Description Potion ............ (999)
Other Notes: Some extra information that didn't fit anywhere else. This
section will not show up for some herbs.
Overview: A quick review of what the herb is useful for, and how useful the
herb is overall.
1. Apprentice Level Herbs [HERB_NOV]
------------------------------------
And now, the list itself! The list goes by the skill level required to pick
the herb. This section of the list will list the herbs that can be picked at
the Apprentice level.
Peacebloom
----------
Skill Level: 1
Zones Found: Azuremyst Isle, The Barrens, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Durotar,
Dun Morogh, Elwynn Forest, Eversong Woods, Ghostlands, Loch Modan, Mulgore,
Silverpine Forest, Teldrassil, Tirisfal Glades, Westfall
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: In open fields.
Used In:
1 - Minor Healing Potion .................... (1)
1 - Weak Troll's Blood Potion .............. (15)
1 - Minor Rejuvenation Potion .............. (40)
1 - Discolored Healing Potion .............. (50)
1 - Elixir of Minor Fortitude .............. (50)
Other Notes: Used indirectly to make Lesser Healing Potion (combine a Minor
Healing Potion with Briarthorn to make it).
Overview: Early on, a necessary ingredient for several potions, all related in
some way to a character's health. Later on in the game, however, you won't
be making much use of it at all, except a few cases where you need them for
quests. You might occasionally use them to complete "stacks" of lesser
potions you happen to have (so they sell better at auction), but past level
30, you might as well bank, sell, or give (to an aspiring alchemist) what
you have of this.
Silverleaf
----------
Skill Level: 1
Zones Found: Azuremyst Isle, The Barrens, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Durotar,
Dun Morogh, Elwynn Forest, Eversong Woods, Ghostlands, Loch Modan, Mulgore,
Silverpine Forest, Teldrassil, Tirisfal Glades, Westfall
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: Near trees.
Used In:
1 - Minor Healing Potion .................... (1)
2 - Elixir of Minor Defense ................. (1)
1 - Elixir of Lion's Strength ............... (1)
2 - Minor Mana Potion ...................... (25)
1 - Elixir of Minor Agility ................ (50)
Other Notes: Used indirectly to make Lesser Healing Potion (combine a Minor
Healing Potion with Briarthorn to make it).
Overview: Early on, a necessary ingredient for several potions. Later on in
the game, however, you won't be making much use of it at all, except a few
cases where you need them for quests. You might occasionally use them to
complete "stacks" of lesser potions you happen to have (so they sell better
at auction), but past level 30, you might as well bank, sell, or give (to
an aspiring alchemist) what you have of this.
Earthroot
---------
Skill Level: 15
Zones Found: Azuremyst Isle, The Barrens, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Durotar,
Dun Morogh, Elwynn Forest, Eversong Woods, Ghostlands, Loch Modan, Mulgore,
Redridge Mountains, Silverpine Forest, Teldrassil, Tirisfal Glades,
Westfall
Instances Found: Wailing Caverns
Look For It: On the slopes of hills.
Used In:
1 - Elixir of Lion's Strength ............... (1)
2 - Weak Troll's Blood Potion .............. (15)
2 - Elixir of Minor Fortitude .............. (50)
1 - Elixir of Giant Growth ................. (90)
1 - Elixir of Ogre's Strength ............. (150)
Overview: Used to make several elixirs. Early in the game, this will be useful
for regenerative potions, or potions increasing health, or just plain brute
strength. But by mid-game, you're not going to be using much of this, as
they'll be replaced by better potions using newer ingredients. Tauren,
take note: You can harvest this herb the moment you learn Herbalism!
Mageroyal
---------
Skill Level: 50
Zones Found: Ashenvale, The Barrens, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Durotar,
Duskwood, Ghostlands, Hillsbrad Foothills, Loch Modan, Redridge Mountains,
Silverpine Forest, Stonetalon Mountains, Teldrassil, Westfall, Wetlands
Instances Found: Wailing Caverns
Look For It: In open fields.
Used In:
1 - Minor Mana Potion ...................... (25)
2 - Minor Rejuvenation Potion .............. (40)
1 - Elixir of Wisdom ....................... (90)
3 - Minor Magic Resistance Potion ......... (110)
1 - Lesser Mana Potion .................... (120)
Overview: There's a reason it's called MAGEroyal; the potions it makes tend
to be more useful to spellcasters. The minor magic resistance potion is
one that continues to be useful for a good amount of time after it becomes
available (assuming, of course, you can find the recipe). The Elixir of
Wisdom is useful to all spellcasters because of its Intellect boost (and
now stacks with Arcane Intellect).
Swiftthistle
------------
Skill Level: N/A
Zones Found: Ashenvale, The Barrens, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Durotar,
Duskwood, Ghostlands, Hillsbrad Foothills, Loch Modan, Redridge Mountains,
Silverpine Forest, Stonetalon Mountains, Teldrassil, Westfall, Wetlands
Instances Found: Razorfen Kraul, Wailing Caverns
Look For It: In mageroyal or briarthorn patches.
Used In:
1 - Elixir of Minor Agility ................ (50)
1 - Swiftness Potion ....................... (60)
1 - Holy Protection Potion ................ (100)
1 - Swim Speed Potion ..................... (100)
1 - Elixir of Lesser Agility .............. (140)
Other Notes: When you pick Mageroyal or Briarthorn, you have a chance to find
this as well. Rogues with Cooking skill can use Swiftthistle to make
Thistle Tea, which instantly restores 100 energy when consumed.
Overview: Speed is the name of the game with Swiftthistle. All the potions you
can make with it, save one, directly involve speed or quickness. The
agility potions aren't bad when you involve a Rogue or Hunter. The speed
potions only work for a short time, but are useful in a pinch when you need
to quickly escape an enemy. Holy Protection Potions are only useful in
limited circumstances. Some use, especially for escape, but not as
generally useful as some other herbs.
Briarthorn
----------
Skill Level: 70
Zones Found: Ashenvale, The Barrens, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Duskwood,
Ghostlands, Hillsbrad Foothills, Loch Modan, Redridge Mountains, Silverpine
Forest, Stonetalon Mountains, Westfall, Wetlands
Instances Found: Razorfen Kraul
Look For It: Near trees.
Used In:
1 - Lesser Healing Potion .................. (55)
1 - Rage Potion ............................ (60)
1 - Swiftness Potion ....................... (60)
2 - Elixir of Wisdom ....................... (90)
1 - Healing Potion ........................ (110)
2 - Strong Troll's Blood Potion ........... (125)
Overview: A component of several different types of potions, there's no real
"theme" to them. (Half are health-related, but two include Bruiseweed, and
the other includes a Minor Healing Potion.) The potions you can make with
Briarthorn are generally fairly useful. Healing Potions are almost always
useful, especially the more powerful ones. And the Strong Troll's Blood
Potion is a fairly good elixir to have. Rage Potions are exclusive to
warriors. Swiftness Potion and Elixir of Wisdom have been discussed
previously.
2. Journeyman Level Herbs [HERB_INT]
------------------------------------
Continuing the list, with herbs that require Journeyman level skill.
Stranglekelp
------------
Skill Level: 85 (Apprentice level for Tauren)
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Ashenvale, Azshara, The
Barrens, Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Desolace, Dustwallow Marsh, Feralas,
Ghostlands, Hillsbrad Foothills, The Hinterlands, Silverpine Forest,
Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows, Tanaris, Westfall, Wetlands
Instances Found: Blackfathom Deeps
Look For It: In bodies of water, generally deep ones. (Why isn't there any
kelp in Loch Modan, when it can be found in equally low-level Darkshore and
Westfall, and the *landlocked* Alterac Mountains?)
Used In:
1 - Elixir of Water Breathing .............. (90)
1 - Lesser Mana Potion .................... (120)
1 - Elixir of Defense ..................... (130)
1 - Free Action Potion .................... (150)
1 - Mana Potion ........................... (160)
1 - Elixir of Agility ..................... (185)
1 - Nature Protection Potion .............. (190)
Other Notes: Can sometimes be fished from the ocean in mid-to-high level areas.
Overview: Actually not a bad ingredient. While sometimes a bit troublesome to
gather (it's found underwater after all), it's available in more zones than
any other herb--generally, where there's deep or semi-deep water
(especially oceans), there's stranglekelp. It's a key ingredient in
several potions, including two mana potions. The Free Action Potion is a
good one for escaping from enemies without fear of being slowed, or for a
melee attacker to make sure (s)he can attack without being held in place
for any period of time. Some quests force your player to spend a length of
time underwater, and for those times, the Elixir of Water Breathing is a
very useful potion to have. (Also makes searching for more stranglekelp a
tad easier, hehehe.)
Bruiseweed
----------
Skill Level: 100
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Ashenvale, The Barrens,
Bloodmyst Isle, Darkshore, Desolace, Duskwood, Ghostlands, Hillsbrad
Foothills, Loch Modan, Redridge Mountains, Silverpine Forest, Stonetalon
Mountains, Thousand Needles, Westfall, Wetlands
Instances Found: Blackfathom Deeps, Wailing Caverns
Look For It: On the sides of hills, and near buildings.
Used In:
1 - Holy Protection Potion ................ (100)
1 - Healing Potion ........................ (110)
1 - Potion of Curing ...................... (120)
2 - Strong Troll's Blood Potion ........... (125)
1 - Mighty Troll's Blood Potion ........... (180)
Overview: This herb is all about health. From a spell that protects you from
holy damage to TWO elixirs that allow you to regenerate health faster, it's
hard to go wrong with a potion that uses bruiseweed, no matter which class
you use. Of course, there are better potions at higher skill levels, but
this herb retains some use for a long while. (And healing potions are
always useful.)
Wild Steelbloom
---------------
Skill Level: 115
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Ashenvale, Badlands, The
Barrens, Desolace, Duskwood, Hillsbrad Foothills, Stonetalon Mountains,
Stranglethorn Vale, Thousand Needles, Wetlands
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: On hilltops.
Used In:
1 - Minor Magic Resistance Potion ......... (110)
1 - Elixir of Defense ..................... (130)
1 - Elixir of Lesser Agility .............. (140)
1 - Lesser Invisibility Potion ............ (165)
1 - Elixir of Fortitude ................... (175)
1 - Elixir of Greater Defense ............. (195)
Overview: Blizzard did a good job naming their herbs, didn't they? Wild
Steelbloom is an herb that generally grants some form of protection to its
user when blended into potions. All of the potions grant some sort of buff
to the one who uses it, and except for one or two, it's generally defensive
in nature. One protects against magic, two boost Armor, and one boosts a
person's health. And there's a fifth "defensive" potion that also has some
offensive use, one of Lesser Invisibility. An Agility potion can increase
the chance one has to evade, but also increases chance to hit and chance to
crit, making it primarily an offensive potion. All in all, not a bad herb,
but not always useful to everyone (except for the Elixir of Fortitude and
the Elixir of Greater Defense).
Grave Moss
----------
Skill Level: 120
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, The Barrens, Desolace,
Duskwood, Wetlands
Instances Found: Razorfen Downs, Scarlet Monastery
Look For It: In graveyards, specifically near remains or gravestones.
Used In:
1 - Shadow Protection Potion .............. (135)
4 - Shadow Oil ............................ (165)
Other Notes: Used indirectly to make Greater Shadow Protection Potion (combine
Shadow Oil with Dreamfoil to make it).
Overview: Only two potions? Well, three, actually, but we'll look at the first
couple first. One of them absorbs shadow energy, which is useful in
certain dungeons, while the other grants a chance of extra damage to a
melee weapon. Plus, Shadow Oil is used to make Greater Shadow Protection
Potion, which is basically a better version of the first potion. And
Shadow Oil is used in some other trades, including Leatherworking,
Tailoring, and Blacksmithing. So, not entirely useless, but somewhat
limited nonetheless.
Kingsblood
----------
Skill Level: 125
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Ashenvale, Badlands, The
Barrens, Desolace, Duskwood, Dustwallow Marsh, Hillsbrad Foothills,
Stonetalon Mountains, Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows, Thousand
Needles, Wetlands
Instances Found: Scarlet Monastery, Wailing Caverns
Look For It: In open fields.
Used In:
1 - Shadow Protection Potion .............. (135)
1 - Elixir of Firepower ................... (140)
1 - Elixir of Ogre's Strength ............. (150)
1 - Greater Healing Potion ................ (155)
1 - Mana Potion ........................... (160)
1 - Great Rage Potion ..................... (175)
Other Info: To gain reputation with the Thorium Brotherhood, one must perform
a repeatable quest called "Restoring Fiery Flux via [insert trade good
here]". One of the trade goods that can be used is Kingsblood. The other
two are materials created/harvested by different professions. Thanks to
Dremoon for pointing this out, with Wyrmrider pointing out the same not
long afterward.
Overview: An herb used in a variety of potions. Elixir of Firepower is useful
to those who make use of fire damage. Great Rage Potion is useful only to
Warriors, but its usefulness in that capacity cannot be denied. And two
"restoration" potions as well; one restores a good deal of health, while
the other restores quite a bit of mana.
Liferoot
--------
Skill Level: 150
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Ashenvale, Desolace,
Dustwallow Marsh, Feralas, Hillsbrad Foothills, The Hinterlands,
Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows, Wetlands
Instances Found: Scarlet Monastery, Wailing Caverns
Look For It: At the edge of water, usually streams or swamp water. Sometimes
found near lakes; rarely found near coastlines.
Used In:
1 - Greater Healing Potion ................ (155)
1 - Mighty Troll's Blood Potion ........... (180)
1 - Nature Protection Potion .............. (190)
Overview: Wow, only three potions that use Liferoot. Still, at least two of
them are generally useful (especially the healing potion, natch), and the
third does have some limited uses in certain situations. All of these
potions have been covered under previous herb listings.
3. Expert Level Herbs [HERB_EXP]
--------------------------------
Now we're getting into some of the more dangerous places to go hunting for
herbs. You'll almost always find the following herbs in areas with enemies at
level 30 and above, though a blessed few can be found in more accessible areas.
(Example: Purple Lotus, which requires skill level 210, can be found in
Ashenvale, an area created mostly for L20-30 characters.)
Fadeleaf
--------
Skill Level: 160 (Journeyman level for Tauren)
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Badlands, Dustwallow Marsh,
The Hinterlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows
Instances Found: Razorfen Kraul, Scarlet Monastery
Look For It: Near/in bushes.
Used In:
1 - Lesser Invisibility Potion ............ (165)
4 - Shadow Oil ............................ (165)
1 - Elixir of Detect Lesser Invisibility .. (195)
1 - Catseye Elixir ........................ (200)
Other Notes: Used indirectly to make Greater Shadow Protection Potion (combine
Shadow Oil with Dreamfoil to make it). Rogues need Fadeleaf to make
Blinding Powder, which is used for the Blind ability (thanks, Wyrmrider).
Overview: Invisibility and the shadows are the obvious theme of this herb.
Lesser Invisibility only lasts 15 seconds, so the use is somewhat limited.
Detecting lesser invisibility isn't that useful, since it doesn't detect
"stealthed" enemies such as rogues. (Catseye Elixir is better in that
regard.) On the whole, Fadeleaf's usefulness is somewhat limited as far as
making potions is concerned.
Goldthorn
---------
Skill Level: 170
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Azshara, Badlands, Dustwallow
Marsh, Feralas, The Hinterlands, Stranglethorn Vale, Swamp of Sorrows
Instances Found: Razorfen Downs, Scarlet Monastery
Look For It: On hilltops.
Used In:
1 - Restorative Potion ...................... (1)
1 - Elixir of Fortitude ................... (175)
1 - Elixir of Agility ..................... (185)
1 - Frost Protection Potion ............... (190)
1 - Elixir of Greater Defense ............. (195)
1 - Catseye Elixir ........................ (200)
1 - Greater Mana Potion ................... (205)
1 - Oil of Immolation ..................... (205)
1 - Lesser Stoneshield Potion ............. (215)
1 - Arcane Elixir ......................... (235)
1 - Elixir of Greater Agility ............. (240)
Overview: Wow, this ingredient gets used in eleven different potions? (Before
now, the ingredient that was used in the most potions was Stranglekelp,
with seven.) Now, quite a few of these have specialized use--agility
buffs, stealth detection, frost protection, etc. A few are semi-
specialized, useful for spellcasters (Greater Mana Potion) and those who
deal most of their damage with spells (Arcane Elixir, for Mages, priests,
Balance druids, shammies, etc.). Defense potions are good for boosting any
character's armor. A Restorative Potion can remove debuffs from your
character, of several kinds. And of course, the Elixir of Fortitude is
pretty much useful to everyone, though some more than others. Most of the
potions are rather specific in their uses, but you'll almost certainly find
at least one use for Goldthorn that benefits you.
Khadgar's Whisker
-----------------
Skill Level: 185
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains, Arathi Highlands, Azshara, Badlands, Dustwallow
Marsh, Feralas, Hillsbrad Foothills, The Hinterlands, Stranglethorn Vale,
Swamp of Sorrows
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: Near trees.
Used In:
1 - Elixir of Frost Power ................. (190)
1 - Elixir of Detect Lesser Invisibility .. (195)
4 - Frost Oil ............................. (200)
1 - Greater Mana Potion ................... (205)
1 - Magic Resistance Potion ............... (210)
1 - Superior Healing Potion ............... (215)
1 - Elixir of Greater Intellect ........... (235)
Overview: This ingredient has quite a few potions as well, and some are very
useful. Elixir of Frost Power is limited to Frost build mages, pretty
much. Frost Oil is good for melee attackers, though it's used by other
professions as well. Mana potions are always good for casters. The new
magic resistance potion is very useful when you enter areas with casters,
especially if they use more than one school. Healing potions are good for
everyone. And naturally, Greater Intellect can be useful to casters.
Wintersbite
-----------
Skill Level: 195
Zones Found: Alterac Mountains
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: In open fields.
Used In:
1 - Elixir of Frost Power ................. (190)
1 - Frost Protection Potion ............... (190)
2 - Frost Oil ............................. (200)
Overview: If you don't see the pattern here, I pity you. All of these have
been covered under previous herbs. Frost Oil, of course, remains useful to
other professions.
Firebloom
---------
Skill Level: 205
Zones Found: Badlands, Blasted Lands, Searing Gorge, Tanaris
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: In open fields.
Used In:
1 - Oil of Immolation ..................... (205)
1 - Goblin Rocket Fuel .................... (210)
4 - Philosophers' Stone ................... (225)
3 - Elixir of Greater Firepower ........... (250)
Other Info: Firebloom is used by enchanters to make Wizard Oil and Brilliant
Wizard Oil.
Overview: Limited use. Oil of Immolation isn't *that* useful unless you're a
tank trying to get the attention of more than one mob (usually not an
advisable tactic), though it is considered very useful in the Benediction
epic quest for priests. Goblin Rocket Fuel is good for Engineers of the
Goblin variety, so it might make some money that way. Fire mages will love
the Elixir of Greater Firepower, naturally. But the most useful thing
you'll likely use Firebloom for is the Philosophers' Stone. Create one of
these, and you'll be able to transmute metals and essences. But a
Philosophers' Stone is unique, so it won't be useful to create more a
second one unless you throw away the first one by accident.
Purple Lotus
------------
Skill Level: 210
Zones Found: Ashenvale, Azshara, Badlands, Feralas, The Hinterlands,
Stranglethorn Vale, Tanaris
Instances Found: Dire Maul, Zul'Gurub
Look For It: Near ruins.
Used In:
1 - Magic Resistance Potion ............... (210)
2 - Elixir of Greater Water Breathing ..... (215)
4 - Philosophers' Stone ................... (225)
1 - Wildvine Potion ....................... (225)
1 - Dreamless Sleep Potion ................ (230)
1 - Elixir of Dream Vision ................ (240)
Other Info: Purple Lotus is used by enchanters to make Lesser Mana Oil and
Brilliant Mana Oil--thanks, Wyrmrider!
Overview: This is a very nice herb, part of a variety of useful products.
Magic resistance is very nice against enemy casters, should you face them.
The Dreamless Sleep potion allows for quicker healing than with food (even
than with Sagefish Delight), and can actually be used during battle, though
this assumes the enemies aren't attacking *you*, but someone else. The
Elixir of Dream Vision is a very rare find, and a fairly useful one--it
temporarily puts your character to sleep, but allows your point of view to
move around like a normal character, allowing you to explore dangerous
places with little to no risk to yourself (though be careful where you park
your body!) The Elixir of Greater Water Breathing is useful, but probably
little more than the regular Elixir of Water Breathing, as you probably
won't be spending a full hour underwater. Wildvine potion is too
unreliable for general use, though you can use it to get rid of excess
wildvine (though Wildvine is used in other professions besides Alchemy),
and build your alchemy skill. (Then, sell the potions to a vendor.) And
finally, this plant is used in the creation of a Philosophers' Stone. All
in all, a nice plant.
Wildvine
--------
Skill Level: N/A
Zones Found: Ashenvale, Azshara, Badlands, Feralas, The Hinterlands,
Stranglethorn Vale, Tanaris
Instances Found: Dire Maul, Zul'Gurub
Look For It: With purple lotus.
Used In:
1 - Wildvine Potion ....................... (225)
Other Notes: When you pick Purple Lotus, you have a chance to find this as
well. Used in other professions, including Leatherworking, Enchanting, and
Blacksmithing, usually to give a product an random enchant. Some trolls in
Stranglethorn Vale and the Hinterlands also drop this.
Overview: Pretty much useless to an alchemist, other than for "training" in the
skill. You may be better off selling wildvine to someone who needs it.
Arthas' Tears
-------------
Skill Level: 220
Zones Found: Eastern Plaguelands, Felwood, Western Plaguelands
Instances Found: Razorfen Downs
Look For It: ???
Used In:
1 - Elixir of Detect Undead ............... (230)
1 - Gift of Arthas ........................ (240)
Overview: Only two potions here. The Elixir of Detect Undead has limited use,
even in places that contain undead. Gift of Arthas, however, is quite
useful for melee fighters (especially tanks) and solo players. Even
players who don't expect to get attacked might look at it. You really
can't make use of this until you can safely enter Felwood, though--which is
about level 50.
4. Artisan Level Herbs [HERB_ART]
---------------------------------
These herbs are the most difficult to find, but many of them are the most
useful herbs in the game for general use. You can find some of these in mid-
level (30-40 or even 20-30) zones, but most of them, you'll need to look in
zones that are L40+. Good luck!
Bloodvine
---------
Skill Level: N/A
Zones Found: (none)
Instances Found: Zul'Gurub
Look For It: Where other herbs grow in Zul'Gurub.
Used In:
Various crafted items from the Blacksmithing, Engineering, Leatherworking, and
Tailoring professions. Alchemy recipes do not use this herb.
Overview: Zul'Gurub is a level 60 raid instance. Sometimes Bloodvine drops
from enemies, but herbalists can also harvest Bloodvine from Zul'Gurub
herbs if they have the Blood Scythe.
Sungrass
--------
Skill Level: 230 (Expert level for Tauren)
Zones Found: Azshara, Blasted Lands, Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands,
Felwood, Feralas, The Hinterlands, Silithus, Un'Goro Crater, Western
Plaguelands
Instances Found: Zul'Gurub
Look For It: In open fields.
Used In:
1 - Superior Healing Potion ............... (215)
1 - Invisibility Potion ................... (235)
1 - Elixir of Greater Agility ............. (240)
1 - Elixir of Giants ...................... (245)
1 - Superior Mana Potion .................. (260)
1 - Elixir of Superior Defense ............ (265)
Overview: Any herb that makes a good healing potion gets a high score in my
book. ;-) Seriously, though, healing potions tend to sell well at the
Auction House, and the more powerful, the better. (And of course they're
useful to everyone, so why the hell not?) The mana potion is good for
higher-level spellcasters, and the elixirs have some limited use (the
defense one especially).
Blindweed
---------
Skill Level: 235 (Expert level for Tauren)
Zones Found: Swamp of Sorrows, Un'Goro Crater, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Maraudon
Look For It: Near fens, swamps, and tar pits.
Used In:
1 - Arcane Elixir ......................... (235)
1 - Elixir of Greater Intellect ........... (235)
1 - Gift of Arthas ........................ (240)
2 - Limited Invulnerability Potion ........ (250)
1 - Superior Mana Potion .................. (260)
Overview: This herb has a few uses. Arcane Elixir is good for those who deal
most of their damage with spells. Elixir of Greater Intellect works for
priests and warlocks, as well as others who use a fair amount of magic.
(Mages not so much, because if they have the highest level of Arcane
Intellect, or Arcane Brilliance, this won't be worth it.) Gift of Arthas
was covered under Arthas' Tears, and the Superior Mana Potion under
Sungrass. The Limited Invulnerability potion is just that--limited. It's
good as a desperation measure if you're being attacked, though there may
also be some strategic uses for it as well. Overall, Not a bad herb.
Ghost Mushroom
--------------
Skill Level: 245
Zones Found: The Hinterlands, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Dire Maul, Maraudon
Look For It: In dark caves.
Used In:
1 - Invisibility Potion ................... (235)
2 - Ghost Dye ............................. (245)
1 - Elixir of Demonslaying ................ (250)
3 - Elixir of Shadow Power ................ (250)
1 - Limited Invulnerability Potion ........ (250)
Other notes: Thanks to Chumpacabra, server unknown, for reminding me that this
grows in Zangarmarsh.
Overview: The pattern here tends toward "ghosts", obviously, though this
doesn't quite seem to hold true for everything listed here. Invisibility
Potion and Limited Invulnerability Potion were covered earlier. Ghost Dye
is a product used by tailors, and seldom used at that. Elixir of
Demonslaying is good for melee/ranged attackers going after demons,
obviously. And the Elixir of Shadow Power is for Priests and Warlocks who
deal most of their damage via shadow. Not that bad an herb, but limited.
Gromsblood
----------
Skill Level: 250
Zones Found: Ashenvale, Blasted Lands, Desolace, Felwood
Instances Found: Dire Maul
Look For It: Generally, where demons can be found.
Used In:
1 - Elixir of Giants ...................... (245)
1 - Elixir of Demonslaying ................ (250)
2 - Elixir of Detect Demon ................ (250)
3 - Mighty Rage Potion .................... (255)
2 - Elixir of Brute Force ................. (275)
1 - Major Troll's Blood Potion ............ (290)
7 - Flask of the Titans ................... (300)
Overview: Our first herb to be used in a L300 potion! The theme of this herb
seems to be towards might and such mighty creatures as demons. Now, Elixir
of Giants and Elixir of Demonslaying are already covered under previous
ingredients. Elixir of Detect Demon, as can be expected, is rather limited
in use. Mighty Rage Potion is warriors-only. Elixir of Brute Force is
more generally useful than the Elixir of Giants, because it increases
strength AND stamina by 18, but it might be useless to a non-melee fighter
with a priest around, since PW: Fortitude wipes the Stamina buff if the
PW is stronger. Major Troll's Blood Potion is the best of the Troll's
Blood potions (and since it now works in battle, the potion series itself
isn't too bad now). Flask of the Titans is a great potion in itself (1200
additional health for 2 hours! Woo!), but it requires a LOT of herbs to
make, and can't be used in conjunction with any of the other Flask potions.
Not useful to everyone, but Gromsblood is by no means a bad ingredient.
Golden Sansam
-------------
Skill Level: 260
Zones Found: Azshara, Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands, Felwood, Feralas,
Hellfire Peninsula, The Hinterlands, Silithus, Un'Goro Crater, Western
Plaguelands, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Zul'Gurub
Look For It: Widespread.
Used In:
1 - Greater Dreamless Sleep Potion ........ (275)
2 - Major Healing Potion .................. (275)
4 - Major Rejuvenation Potion ............. (300)
1 - Volatile Healing Potion ............... (300)
1 - Elixir of Healing Power ............... (310)
Overview: Holy healing potions, Batman! Seriously, though, this herb is part
of quite possibly the three most powerful healing potions in the game up
until Burning Crusade. The first, the Greater Dreamless Sleep Potion, is
useful in battle (as long as you're not struck or cleansed by an
overzealous healer) to regenerate 2100 health and mana in 12 seconds! The
Major Healing Potion is more generally useful, since it instantly restores
health. But the king of these is most likely the Major Rejuvenation
Potion, which restores 1440+ health and mana instantly! (Of course, it's
by far the hardest to make, and the recipe requires running Molten Core,
but still could be worth it.) Volatile Healing Potion is simply a copy of
the Major Healing Potion in terms of functionality, but the two don't stack
with each other. And the Elixir of Healing Power finally gives an elixir
to healers. All in all, a good herb.
Dreamfoil
---------
Skill Level: 270
Zones Found: Azshara, Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands, Felwood, Hellfire
Peninsula, Silithus, Un'Goro Crater, Western Plaguelands, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Dire Maul, Zul'Gurub
Look For It: Widespread.
Used In:
1 - Elixir of the Sages ................... (270)
2 - Greater Dreamless Sleep Potion ........ (275)
1 - Mageblood Potion ...................... (275)
3 - Greater Arcane Elixir ................. (285)
1 - Greater Arcane Protection Potion ...... (290)
1 - Greater Fire Protection Potion ........ (290)
1 - Greater Frost Protection Potion ....... (290)
1 - Greater Nature Protection Potion ...... (290)
1 - Greater Shadow Protection Potion ...... (290)
3 - Major Mana Potion ..................... (295)
7 - Flask of Distilled Wisdom ............. (300)
7 - Flask of Supreme Power ................ (300)
4 - Major Rejuvenation Potion ............. (300)
1 - Adept's Elixir ........................ (300)
Overview: O_O FOURTEEN different potions?!? And I thought Goldthorn had a lot
to its name. Better yet, some of these potions are quite good for general
consumption. The Elixir of Sages is good for spellcasters because it ups
intellect and spirit, but the Intellect part *does* get wiped by Arcane
Intellect. Mageblood potion is like Mighty Troll's Blood potion, only for
mana. However, the potion itself is hard to get. Greater Arcane Elixir is
always good for spellcasters that do damage with their spells (natch). The
greater protection potions are somewhat hard to make since they require
nonstandard ingredients, and suffer from limited usefulness. Major Mana
Potion is again useful to spellcasters. Dreamfoil is also used (in
enormous quantities) by two diffferent Flasks. One increases maximum mana
by a ridiculous 2000 for 2 hours. The other increases damage dealt by
magical spells and effects by 150(!), again for 2 hours. If you can't make
the powerful Flasks, perhaps the Adept's Elixir is more to your liking--it
increases your spell damage, your spell healing, AND your crit rating.
Overall, this herb is nice in general--don't forget the Greater Dreamless
Sleep and Major Rejuvenation Potions--and even nicer for casters.
Mountain Silversage
-------------------
Skill Level: 280
Zones Found: Azshara, Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands, Felwood, Hellfire
Peninsula, Silithus, Un'Goro Crater, Western Plaguelands, Winterspring
Instances Found: Dire Maul, Zul'Gurub
Look For It: On hillsides and hilltops.
Used In:
1 - Major Healing Potion .................. (275)
2 - Elixir of the Mongoose ................ (280)
1 - Greater Arcane Elixir ................. (285)
1 - Living Action Potion .................. (285)
3 - Flask of Chromatic Resistance ......... (300)
3 - Flask of Petrification ................ (300)
3 - Flask of Supreme Power ................ (300)
1 - Onslaught Elixir ...................... (300)
1 - Elixir of Major Strength .............. (305)
Overview: The usual bonus points for being part of a powerful healing potion,
but let's look at everything else as well. Elixir of the Mongoose is
basically a melee potion, and essentially replaces the Elixir of Greater
Agility. Greater Arcane Elixir is for spellcasters who cast damaging
spells. Living Action Potion can *cure* the conditions that it's designed
to prevent, but is better used as a reactive potion compared to the Free
Action Potion. The Onslaught Elixir is a good one for hunters, and the
Elixir of Major Strength covers other melee. Three Flasks as well, but
we've already covered one (the Flask of Supreme Power). The Flask of
Chromatic Resistance provides long-lasting resistance to all schools of
magic. And the Flask of Petrification can be used to protect you
temporarily from attacks and such for a minute, but also prevents you from
taking any action in your petrified state. It lasts for only 1 minute,
unlike the other Flasks which last 2 hours. A loss for that last potion
(except for some strategic uses), but a win for the herb overall.
Plaguebloom
-----------
Skill Level: 285
Zones Found: Eastern Plaguelands, Felwood, Western Plaguelands
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: ???
2 - Elixir of the Sages ................... (270)
2 - Elixir of Brute Force ................. (275)
2 - Mageblood Potion ...................... (275)
2 - Elixir of the Mongoose ................ (280)
2 - Purification Potion ................... (285)
1 - Major Troll's Blood Potion ............ (290)
Overview: Wow, the third highest level herb, and no L300 potions? What's more,
several of the potions it *can* make require alchemy skill lower than its
required herbalism skill. The Elixir of the Sages, Elixir of Brute Force,
and Elixir of the Mongoose are all stat-boosters covered under previous
herbs. The Mageblood potion has also been covered, as has the Major
Troll's Blood Potion. The Purification Potion, however, has not; what it
does is attempt to remove one Poison, Curse, and Disease--useful if you
can't remove them yourself. You'll probably find a use for Plaguebloom,
no matter your class.
Icecap
------
Skill Level: 290
Zones Found: Winterspring
Instances Found: (none)
Look For It: In the open, generally.
2 - Living Action Potion .................. (285)
2 - Purification Potion ................... (285)
2 - Major Mana Potion ..................... (295)
7 - Flask of Chromatic Resistance ......... (300)
3 - Flask of Distilled Wisdom ............. (300)
Overview: No potions we haven't covered elsewhere. Overall fairly useful,
especially if you're going for the Flasks shown here.
Black Lotus
-----------
Skill Level: 300
Zones Found: Burning Steppes, Eastern Plaguelands, Silithus, Winterspring
Instances Found: Dire Maul
Look For It: ???
1 - Gurubashi Mojo Madness ................ (???)
1 - Flask of Chromatic Resistance ......... (300)
1 - Flask of Distilled Wisdom ............. (300)
1 - Flask of Petrification ................ (300)
1 - Flask of Supreme Power ................ (300)
1 - Flask of the Titans ................... (300)
Other Notes: Can also be found in the arena outside Dire Maul, when the boss
Skarr spawns. A lot of high-level herbs spawn during that time. (Thanks,
Thartos.) Rarely, it can be "skinned" from bog giants in various places,
especially Zangarmarsh.
Overview: We've covered nearly all these potions, but it's clear here that the
Black Lotus is the lynchpin of many powerful but costly Flask potions.
It's also used to make Gurubashi Mojo Madness, which is used in Zul'Gurub
to summon certain bosses.
5. Master Level Herbs [HERB_MAS]
--------------------------------
These herbs are the ones that can be found only in Outland. Even though
Felweed (and by extension, Fel Lotus) can be harvested by a maxed-out Artisan
herbalist, getting Master level once in Outland is easy enough that the biggest
obstacle for these herbs is much the same--to harvest them, you have to be able
to access Outland yourself.
Felweed
-------
Skill Level: 300 (Artisan level, technically)
Zones Found: Blade's Edge Mountains, Hellfire Peninsula, Nagrand, Netherstorm,
Shadowmoon Valley, Terokkar Forest, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Coilfang Reservoir (The Slave Pens, The Underbog)
Look For It: Widespread.
1 - Adept's Elixir ........................ (300)
1 - Onslaught Elixir ...................... (300)
1 - Volatile Healing Potion ............... (300)
1 - Elixir of Camouflage .................. (305)
1 - Elixir of Major Strength .............. (305)
1 - Elixir of Major Fortitude ............. (310)
1 - Unstable Mana Potion .................. (310)
1 - Elixir of Mastery ..................... (315)
1 - Sneaking Potion ....................... (315)
1 - Elixir of Draenic Wisdom .............. (320)
1 - Super Healing Potion .................. (325)
2 - Elixir of Major Agility ............... (330)
1 - Super Mana Potion ..................... (340)
2 - Fel Regeneration Potion ............... (345)
Other Notes: This herb may also be "skinned" from bog giants in various places,
especially Zangarmarsh.
Overview: Felweed is probably the most ubiquitous of the Outland-only herbs,
both in terms of where it's found, and also where it's used--no less than
fourteen potions (tied for the overall record with Dreamfoil, not counting
the Cauldrons that Mana Thistle can currently make). The Adept's Elixir,
Onslaught Elixir, Volatile Healing Potion, and Elixir of Major Strength
we've already covered. The Volatile Healing Potion and Unstable Mana
Potion are different versions of currently-existing potions, while the
Super Healing Potion and Super Mana Potion are their more powerful cousins.
The Elixir of Camouflage helps in some PvP situations, as does the Sneaking
Potion (though the latter may help in some PvE situations as well). The
Elixir of Mastery is good for jack-of-all-trades classes, while the Elixir
of Major Agility is another good melee elixir. The Elixir of Major
Fortitude is good for tanks who need a health boost, while the Elixir of
Draenic Wisdom is good for casters who need a mana boost. Finally, the Fel
Regeneration Potion is useful for some situations where HoT healing is
needed and the "price" (all stats decrease by 15 for as many minutes) is
not too high.
Fel Blossom
-----------
Skill Level: 300 (Artisan level, technically)
Zones Found: Blade's Edge Mountains, Hellfire Peninsula, Nagrand, Netherstorm,
Shadowmoon Valley, Terokkar Forest, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Coilfang Reservoir (The Slave Pens, The Underbog)
Look For It: With felweed.
Ability: Bind on pickup. Shields you for 750 to 1250 damage. Lasts 15
seconds. 2 minute cooldown.
Overview: Poor man's healthstone. A shield may be better in some cases than a
healthstone, since one doesn't always have a warlock available, but unless
you're using this preemptively, you'll probably want the healthstone more.
Mages will want to be cautious, since the cooldown is shared with their
mana gems as well. Some will like this as a backup to a healthstone,
however. Too bad this can't be traded, and has no sell price to vendors.
Fel Lotus
---------
Skill Level: 300 (Artisan level, technically)
Zones Found: Blade's Edge Mountains, Hellfire Peninsula, Nagrand, Netherstorm,
Shadowmoon Valley, Terokkar Forest, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Coilfang Reservoir (The Slave Pens, The Underbog)
Look For It: With other herbs in Outland.
2 - Alchemist's Stone ..................... (350)
1 - Flask of Blinding Light ............... (???)
1 - Flask of Chromatic Wonder ............. (???)
1 - Flask of Fortification ................ (???)
1 - Flask of Mighty Restoration ........... (???)
1 - Flask of Pure Death ................... (???)
1 - Flask of Relentless Assault ........... (???)
Overview: This herb, which rarely appears with other herbs (and, to my
knowledge, never by itself), is used in a bunch of high-level recipes. The
Alchemist's Stone is a BoP epic trinket which boosts stats, increases your
healing and mana regen from potions, and replaces your Philosophers' Stone.
The various new Flasks can be learned only through discovery, but some of
the old Flasks are still preferred in some situations. Blinding Light and
Pure Death increase spell damage for selected schools by 80 for 2 hours.
The Flask of Chromatic Wonder is far superior to the Flask of Chromatic
Resistance, with 10 more resistance to all schools and +10 to all stats.
The Flask of Fortification adds 500 health and 10 defense rating for 2
hours, making it a superior flask to the Flask of the Titans. The Flask of
Relentless Assault simply adds 120 attack power for 2 hours, making it
ideal for physical DPS (both melee and ranged). Finally, the Flask of
Mighty Restoration is good for mana longevity, restoring 25 mana per 5
seconds. Healers will love it.
Side note: Magical DPS gets very little in terms of Flasks this time around, so
if they're going to use a flask they'll likely stick to the good ol' Flask
of Supreme Power unless the issue is longevity, not damage.
Dreaming Glory
--------------
Skill Level: 315 (Artisan level for Tauren)
Zones Found: Blade's Edge Mountains, Hellfire Peninsula, Nagrand, Netherstorm,
Shadowmoon Valley, Terokkar Forest, Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: ?
Look For It: On hillsides.
1 - Elixir of Healing Power ............... (310)
1 - Earthen Elixir ........................ (320)
2 - Super Mana Potion ..................... (340)
1 - Major Dreamless Sleep Potion .......... (350)
7 - Flask of Chromatic Wonder ............. (???)
7 - Flask of Mighty Restoration ........... (???)
1 - Super Rejuvenation Potion ............. (???)
Other Notes: This herb may also be "skinned" from bog giants in various places,
especially Zangarmarsh. If you pick the herb itself (not skin it), you
will get a 15-minute buff where you regenerate 30 HP every 5 seconds.
(Thanks to Merwin for the reminder.) Previously used for the Super
HEALING Potion, not the Super Mana potion as now.
Overview: Another stereotypical healing herb--or at least, it was. Now it's
associated with both healing and mana. Since it's used in the Super Mana
Potion--it gets bonus points for that alone. Besides that, it's used in an
Elixir of Healing Power (mentioned in a previous herb's overview), a Major
Dreamless Sleep Potion (strongest of that type at the moment), and a Super
Rejuvenation Potion (again, the strongest of that type at the moment). The
Earthen Elixir prevents damage rather than healing it, and the Flask of
Mighty Restoration regenerates mana--healers will like that one very much.
The Flask of Chromatic Wonder is good for resistance, and will boost other
stats as well.
Ragveil
-------
Skill Level: 325
Zones Found: Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Coilfang Reservoir (The Slave Pens, The Steamvault, The
Underbog)
Look For It: Near fens or bogs.
1 - Elixir of Camouflage .................. (305)
2 - Unstable Mana Potion .................. (310)
2 - Elixir of Major Fortitude ............. (310)
2 - Mad Alchemist's Potion ................ (315)
2 - Sneaking Potion ....................... (315)
2 - Earthen Elixir ........................ (320)
2 - Elixir of the Searching Eye ........... (325)
1 - Elixir of Ironskin .................... (330)
3 - Shrouding Potion ...................... (335)
Notes: This herb may also be "skinned" from bog giants in various places,
especially Zangarmarsh.
Overview: Previously one of the less useful Outland herbs (probably the least
useful), patch 2.1 has given this herb life, and 2.3 has boosted it even
more. Many of the "legacy" potions have to do with concealment or the
breaking thereof. Elixir of Camouflage prevents a player from being
tracked, making it an exclusively PvP buff. Sneaking Potion increases a
player's stealth by 6 levels for a full minute, which is useful for both
PvE and PvP. The Elixir of the Searching Eye is the answer to that, being
a boosted Catseye Elixir. The Shrouding Potion is PvE only, reducing a
player's threat. Potions that run against the theme are quite plentiful,
however. Elixir of Major Fortitude is good for a health buff, Earthen
Elixir and Elixir of Ironskin are good for damage reduction, and Unstable
Mana Potion will recharge a player's mana. And then there's the Mad
Alchemist's Potion, which acts as a Major Rejuvenation Potion for
alchemists, while granting a random elixir buff!
Terocone
--------
Skill Level: 325
Zones Found: Shadowmoon Valley, Terokkar Forest
Instances Found: ?
Look For It: Near trees.
3 - Elixir of Mastery ..................... (315)
1 - Elixir of Draenic Wisdom .............. (320)
3 - Insane Strength Potion ................ (320)
1 - Elixir of the Searching Eye ........... (325)
1 - Elixir of Major Agility ............... (330)
2 - Fel Strength Elixir ................... (335)
1 - Elixir of Major Defense ............... (345)
2 - Haste Potion .......................... (350)
2 - Heroic Potion ......................... (350)
7 - Flask of Relentless Assault ........... (???)
Notes: This herb may also be "skinned" from bog giants in various places,
especially Zangarmarsh.
Overview: A component in many stat-boosting elixirs and potions, especially for
melee classes. The Elixir of Mastery sort of breaks the pattern, but it
is for hybrid classes that may melee (such as druids, paladins, or
shamans). Elixir of the Searching Eye breaks the pattern more, since any
class would benefit from being able to see stealthed enemies. Some recipes
are better for tanks (Major Defense, Insane Strength Potion, Heroic Potion)
are meant for tanks; others (Major Agility, Fel Strength Elixir, Haste
Potion) are meant for melee DPS (and in the case of the Fel Strength
Elixir, ranged physical DPS as well). Finally, the Flask of Relentless
Assault is a major attack power boost for melee and ranged physical
classes. Overall, quite useful.
Flame Cap
---------
Skill Level: 335
Zones Found: Zangarmarsh
Instances Found: Coilfang Reservoir (The Slave Pens, Steam Vaults, The
Underbog)
Look For It: ?
Ability: Chance to strike a ranged or melee target for 40 fire damage. Also
increases fire spell damage by up to 80. Lasts 1 minute. 3 minute
cooldown; shares cooldown with mana gems/healthstones and similar items.
Overview: This herb currently has no recipes associated with it and can be used
only for its listed ability. Physical DPS will likely appreciate the
extra DPS this gives, and so will fire mages and some warlocks, but it has
a 3-minute cooldown and also shares it with some restorative items.
Ancient Lichen
--------------
Skill Level: 340
Zones Found: (none)
Instances Found: Auchindoun (Auchenai Crypts, Mana-Tombs, Sethekk Halls,
Shadow Labyrinth); Coilfang Reservoir (The Slave Pens, The Steamvault, The
Underbog)
Look For It: On the floors of dungeons.
1 - Elixir of Major Frost Power ........... (320)
1 - Elixir of Ironskin .................... (330)
1 - Elixir of Major Firepower ............. (345)
3 - Elixir of Major Defense ............... (345)
1 - Elixir of Major Shadow Power .......... (350)
1 - Heroic Potion ......................... (350)
1 - Elixir of Major Mageblood ............. (355)
1 - Ironshield Potion ..................... (365)
7 - Flask of Fortification ................ (???)
Notes: This herb may also be "skinned" from bog giants in various places,
especially Zangarmarsh. It's possible to accumulate a good deal of Ancient
Lichen outside of dungeons this way, though it's generally slower.
Overview: This herb is used for a variety of powerful buffs. It can increase
spell power (Major Frost Power, Major Firepower, Major Shadow Power). It
can bolster defense (Ironskin, Major Defense, Heroic Potion, Ironshield
Potion). It can also help regenerate mana (Major Mageblood) or even health
(Flask of Fortification). Likely you'll find some use for this herb.
Netherbloom

2 - Super Healing Potion .................. (325)
1 - Shrouding Potion ...................... (335)
1 - Destruction Potion .................... (350)
1 - Haste Potion .......................... (350)
1 - Elixir of Major Mageblood ............. (355)
1 - Elixir of Empowerment ................. (365)
7 - Flask of Blinding Light ............... (???)
1 - Super Rejuvenation Potion ............. (???)
Other Notes: When you pick this herb, you may get a random 15-minute buff (or
debuff) that raises (or reduces) a random stat by 50. (Thanks to Merwin
for the reminder.)
Overview: While Terocone was focused more toward the physical fighters, this
herb seems focused more towards casters. The Shrouding Potion, Super
Healing Potion, Haste Potion, Elixir of Major Mageblood, Super Rejuvenation
Potion, and Flask of Blinding Light have already been covered. The
Destruction Potion is a poppable magic DPS trinket in a bottle, but it's
not all that useful except for a last-ditch effort to increase DPS near the
end of a fight (Princess Huhuran-esque fights, for example). And the
Elixir of Empowerment increases your spell penetration, making it good
against enemies that have resistance (not immunity) to your offensive
spells, and not enough warlocks to cover your casts.
Nightmare Vine

2 - Fel Strength Elixir ................... (335)
3 - Fel Regeneration Potion ............... (345)
2 - Destruction Potion .................... (350)
1 - Elixir of Major Shadow Power .......... (350)
2 - Fel Mana Potion ....................... (360)
7 - Flask of Pure Death ................... (???)
Other Notes: Prior to patch 2.1, when you picked this herb successfully, you
would receive a 10-second debuff that drains 100 health per second.
(Thanks to Merwin for the reminder.) The debuff rarely pops up anymore,
though it *may* occasionally do so.
Overview: Fel magic. Those two words tend to describe what the Nightmare
Vine is about. We’ve talked about all the recipes here except for the
Fel Mana Potion. This is a potion for casters that might be considered if
magical DPS and HPS isn’t too critical in a fight. Hunters may find it
useful to recharge mana, since most of their DPS isn’t magically related.
Nightmare Seed
--------------
Skill Level: 365
Zones Found: Shadowmoon Valley
Instances Found: ?
Look For It: With nightmare vine.
Ability: Increases your health by 2000 for 30 seconds. When the effect ends,
the extra health will be lost.
Other Notes: Thanks to Merwin for reminding me to include this.
Overview: This consumable version of Last Stand is far more powerful than the
Heroic Potion, though this version doesn't include the extra Strength that
Heroic Potion does. While the cooldown on this is 3 minutes instead of
the usual 2, this may be more desirable than a healthstone in some cases,
and in particularly long fights it may be beneficial to carry these as well
as a warlock healthstone(s). Paladin tanks and some warriors will love
this, as it's a very powerful item even lategame. Even Protection warriors
may want this as a backup in case they've blown their Last Stand and Shield
Wall, used up their healthstone(s), and still need help to finish a fight.
Make sure that your healer(s) know that you're using this, though.

Other Notes: When you pick this herb successfully, you will regenerate a small
to moderate amount of mana (somewhere from 500 to 3000). (Thanks to Merwin
for the reminder.) You'll need a flying mount (or flight form) in order to
access most, if not all, of the places these grow.
Overview: This powerful and valuable herb is used for a variety of potions,
elixirs, and flasks. It can be found in (nearly) all the zones in Outland,
but only in areas accessible with a flying mount or flight form. The Fel
Mana Potion, Elixir of Empowerment, Super Rejuvenation Potion, and the
Flasks have all been discussed already. This herb is also an ingredient in
the six Protection Potions, when combined with certain Primal elements. A
top-level herb, for top-level recipes.

B. Alchemy Recipes [ALCHEMY]
============================
For an alchemist to be able to create potions, he/she needs the recipes for
them first. It's not enough to know what ingredients you need; you also need
to know how to mix them properly in order to make the potions. Once you do,
and you have the skill, potion-making will succeed every time.
A note before I begin. On Thottbot there is an NPC listed as "Bernard the
Mixer", and is apparently located in Westfall. He apparently sold a bunch of
recipes that appear as random drops, or are sold by other vendors. The
existence of Bernard the Mixer has been proven false, however, by several
methods. So if you compare my guide to Thottbot, you will see that I mention
Bernard in several of the same entries, but always to the effect that Bernard
does NOT exist. Because he *doesn't* exist.
To repeat: BERNARD THE MIXER DOES NOT EXIST. Got it?
The following format will be used to list each alchemy recipe:
Alchemy Description Potion
--------------------------
Type: The category this recipe falls under. Most will be Potions, Elixirs,
Flasks, or Transmutes, though some are of other types.
Skill Level: The skill level required to make the potion or other product.
Use Level: The character level required to use the potion or other product, if
applicable. (Thanks to Enchantra, Windrunner server, for suggesting this.)
Found From: Lists whether the recipe is included with the initial training,
bought from a trainer, bought as a recipe from a vendor, received from a
quest (as a recipe), or dropped as a recipe by an enemy.
Look For It: Gives the specific places you can get the recipe.
Ingredients:
What you need to make the product (plus where non-herbs can be found).
1 - Herb Name
1 - Heart of Description (dropped from Guide Makers in the FAQLands)
1 - Imbued Vial
Catalysts: Any additional items or other objects you need to make the potion.
These are not consumed by the process, but may begin a cooldown period.
This section will not show up for most recipes.
Description: What the potion does. Usually taken from in-game, or paraphrased
from the in-game description.
Other Notes: Some extra information that didn't fit anywhere else. This
section will not show up for some recipes.
Overview: A quick review of what the product is useful for, and how useful the
product is overall.
A quick note on Potions, Elixirs, and Flasks.
- Potions often have an instant or short-lived effect. Protection potions
used to be an exception, but they no longer provide the hour-long buff that
they used to. All potions have a shared 2-minute cooldown.
- Elixirs have a 3-second cooldown and provide a long-lasting buff. As of
patch 2.1, most elixirs have a "type": Guardian elixirs for defense, and
Battle elixirs for offense. You can't have more than one of each type of
buff. Some elixirs, however, are "typeless"; they have some kind of effect
that is either shorter-lived than usual, or else has some specific effect
that is either relatively minor, or else is limited in its own way. These
"typeless" elixirs should not "overwrite" Battle or Guardian elixirs.
- Flasks also have a 3-second cooldown. Often they provide a very powerful
buff for 2 hours (only one, the Flask of Petrification, does not), and the
effect persists through death. Unfortunately, Flasks are weaker than they
used to be, and they also take up both the Guardian and Battle elixir slots.
1. Apprentice Level Recipes [ALCH_NOV]
--------------------------------------
All great alchemists have to start somewhere. Fortunately, you won't be
spending too much time in the dregs of apprenticeship.
Minor Healing Potion
--------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 1
Use Level: 1
Found From: You start with this recipe.
Look For It: You start with this recipe.
Ingredients:
1 - Peacebloom
1 - Silverleaf
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Restores 70 to 90 health.
Other Notes: Used to make the Lesser Healing Potion.
Overview: Your basic healing potion. Semi-useful early on, and when you get
the next level of healing potion, you can convert this to more useful
potions.
Elixir of Minor Defense
-----------------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 1
Use Level: 1
Found From: You start with this recipe.
Look For It: You start with this recipe.
Ingredients:
2 - Silverleaf
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases armor by 50 for 1 hour.
Overview: Pretty much every player will find some use for this. Turns obsolete
eventually.
Elixir of Lion's Strength
-------------------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 1
Use Level: 1
Found From: You start with this recipe.
Look For It: You start with this recipe.
Ingredients:
1 - Earthroot
1 - Silverleaf
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases strength by 4 for 1 hour.
Overview: Good for all low-level melee attackers, especially tanks.
Weak Troll's Blood Potion
-------------------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 15
Use Level: 1
Found From: Trainers.
Look For It: Any Journeyman Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Peacebloom
2 - Earthroot
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Regenerate 2 health every 5 seconds (0.8 per tick) for 1 hour.
Overview: It's more useful than it was before. Previously, HP5 effects (health
regenerated per 5 seconds) didn't work in combat. Since they do now, it'll
help extend your life a bit. A good early elixir.
Minor Mana Potion
-----------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 25
Use Level: 5
Found From: Trainers.
Look For It: Any Journeyman Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Mageroyal
2 - Silverleaf
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Restores 140 to 180 mana.
Overview: If you're a spellcaster, you'll want some of these. However, unless
you're in Durotar or Teldrassil, you won't get any Mageroyal until you
leave your starting zone.
Minor Rejuvenation Potion
-------------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 40
Use Level: 5
Found From: Trainers.
Look For It: Any Journeyman Alchemist.
Ingredients:
2 - Mageroyal
1 - Peacebloom
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Restores 90 to 150 health and mana.
Overview: Eh, useful for a little while, if you're a spellcaster. It'll also
be better than your Minor Healing Potion until you reach skill level 50/55.
Discolored Healing Potion
-------------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 50
Use Level: 3
Found From: Quest Reward.
Look For It: Finish "Wild Hearts" given by Rane Yorick, reward from Apothecary
Renferrel. Horde quest only. (Alliance players: best bet is Gadgetzan
Auction House. If you're looking for Bernard the Mixer, I pity you. Stop
looking now--he doesn't exist.)
Ingredients:
2 - Mageroyal
1 - Peacebloom
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Restores 140 to 180 health.
Overview: Horde players might use this for a little bit, until they get to
skill level 55 (for Lesser Healing Potion). Alliance players likely won't
be making this potion at all.
Elixir of Minor Agility
-----------------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 50
Use Level: 2
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: Various enemies ranging from L6 to L15, though this has been found
on L19+ Defias mobs in the Deadmines. More likely this item will be found
inside chests in starting zones and L10-20 zones. It's a rarer drop than
is warranted for its skill level, though.
Ingredients:
1 - Swiftthistle
1 - Silverleaf
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases agility by 4 for 1 hour.
Overview: Useful to melee classes, especially DPS melee classes like Rogues, as
well as ranged physical DPS (i.e. Hunters). Also used in one
Leatherworking recipe.
Elixir of Minor Fortitude
-------------------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 50
Use Level: 2
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Journeyman Alchemist.
Ingredients:
2 - Earthroot
1 - Peacebloom
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases maximum health by 27 for 1 hour.
Overview: Well, it's not a great potion, but it'll work parallel to any Stamina
buffs your character gets. And +27 to max health could make a difference,
especially at the lower levels.
Lesser Healing Potion
---------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 55
Use Level: 3
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Journeyman Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Minor Healing Potion
1 - Briarthorn
Description: Restores 140 to 180 health.
Other Notes: See above for Minor Healing Potion.
Overview: Just as good as Discolored Healing Potion, only easier to make. Also
keeps those Minor Healing Potions useful for just a little longer.
Rage Potion
-----------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 60
Use Level: 4
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: In the second floor of the abandoned inn in Moonbrook, you'll find
a Defias Profiteer who sells a limited supply of this recipe. Other
locations: Xandar Goodbeard in Loch Modan, Ranik and Jazzik in the Barrens,
and Hagrus in Orgrimmar. (And there is still no Bernard the Mixer. The
Defias Profiteer does not count.)
Ingredients:
1 - Sharp Claw (drops off various L15-30 beasts, usually predators)
1 - Briarthorn
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Adds 20 to 40 Rage.
Overview: For warriors only (druids in bear form can't use it). The biggest
problem with this potion is that it operates on the same cooldown as
healing potions, but there are a few times when this can be useful (as
opposed to said healing potion).
Swiftness Potion
----------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 60
Use Level: 5
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: Dammit, there IS no Bernard the Mixer! You're better off (by far)
looking for it in L10-20 zones, either in chests or dropped by L6-20
enemies. It doesn't drop too often, though.
Ingredients:
1 - Swiftthistle
1 - Briarthorn
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases run speed by 50% for 15 seconds.
Overview: It's good for a quick escape, and other tactical purposes, but I
personally think this potion is a bit overrated. Obviously, though, there
are people that think very highly of this potion; probably they know/see
something about this that I don't. This is a good moneymaker, as long as
Swiftthistle isn't overpriced in the AH.
2. Journeyman Level Recipes [ALCH_INT]
--------------------------------------
Disappointed by there being only 12 potions for Apprentice level? Well,
Journeyman gives you a full 18 more, and quite a few of them are good.
Blackmouth Oil
--------------
Type: Reagent
Skill Level: 80
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
2 - Oily Blackmouth (get by fishing at level 10+ zones, especially Oily
Blackmouth Schools)
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Reagent for some alchemy recipes.
Overview: Used in a couple potions for swimming, and one for slipping away from
enemies as well. Certainly no disadvantage to knowing how to make this.
Elixir of Giant Growth
----------------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 90
Use Level: 8
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: Various mobs in the Barrens. Rare drop.
Ingredients:
1 - Deviate Fish (get by fishing in the Barrens or the Wailing Caverns)
1 - Earthroot
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases strength by 8, and makes you far larger than normal.
Lasts 2 minutes.
Overview: More of a novelty than anything (because of the short duration), this
is still somewhat useful to tanks.
Elixir of Water Breathing
-------------------------
Type: Elixir (typeless)
Skill Level: 90
Use Level: 8
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Stranglekelp
2 - Blackmouth Oil
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Allows you to breathe underwater. Lasts 30 minutes.
Overview: Warlocks won't find this too useful (they have their own underwater
breathing buff), and druids will find limited use (because of their
aquatic form). And of course Undead have a longer "breath" bar. Still,
this is a good potion for those who have to stay underwater for a long
period of time, especially for certain quests. Even if the person doesn't
*have* to be *under* the waves, it can still be useful to allow more
freedom to move underwater, and opens up a few tactical options.
Elixir of Wisdom
----------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 90
Use Level: 10
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Mageroyal
2 - Briarthorn
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases intellect by 6 for 1 hour.
Overview: Useful to low-level priests, warlocks, and mages. (Remember, elixirs
now stack with other buffs.)
Holy Protection Potion
----------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 100
Use Level: 10
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Recipe sold by Apothecary Helbrim (Barrens), Hula'mahi (Barrens),
Kzixx (Duskwood), and Xandar Goodbeard (Loch Modan). There is STILL no
Bernard the Mixer, so don't bother with Westfall. :-P (After this point,
I won't even bother mentioning Bernard.)
Ingredients:
1 - Bruiseweed
1 - Swiftthistle
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Absorbs 300 to 500 holy damage. Lasts up to 2 minutes. 2 minute
cooldown.
Overview: You're not going to find too many units that use a lot of holy
damage. Priests and paladins perhaps, but paladins use a lot more of
melee, and priests use a lot of Shadow. VERY limited use.
Swim Speed Potion
-----------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 100
Use Level: 10
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Swiftthistle
1 - Blackmouth Oil
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Doubles swim speed for 20 seconds.
Overview: Meh. It's like the Swiftness Potion, only focused toward water.
Sure, it lasts longer and gives more speed, but it's so focused, there
really isn't that much point to this potion.
Healing Potion
--------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 110
Use Level: 12
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Bruiseweed
1 - Briarthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Restores 280 to 360 health.
Overview: No matter what class you are, these may literally be a lifesaver.
Minor Magic Resistance Potion
-----------------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 110
Use Level: 12
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: Level 16-26 mobs and chests in L20+ zones, Deadmines, Blackfathom
Deeps, and Gnomeregan.
Ingredients:
3 - Mageroyal
1 - Wild Steelbloom
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Increases resistance to all schools of magic by 25 for 3 minutes.
Overview: Well, 25 isn't that much resistance, but across all schools? Not too
bad. At the least it'll give you a greater chance to resist an enemy
spellcast. Too bad it only lasts three minutes. It's a rare drop, so not
too many alchemists can make it.
Potion of Curing
----------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 120
Use Level: 14
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: Level 16-28 mobs and chests in L20+ zones, Deadmines, Blackfathom
Deeps, and Gnomeregan.
Ingredients:
1 - Bruiseweed
1 - Briarthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Imbiber is cleansed of four poisons up to level 60. 2 minute
cooldown.
Overview: The victim of two nerfs, this "new" potion isn't nearly as useful as
it once was.
Lesser Mana Potion
------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 120
Use Level: 14
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Mageroyal
1 - Stranglekelp
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Restores 280 to 360 mana.
Overview: If you're a magic user, get some of these. They do turn out handy in
a pinch. Of course, if you can make better mana potions, then do so.
Strong Troll's Blood Potion
---------------------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 125
Use Level: 15
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
2 - Bruiseweed
2 - Briarthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Regenerate 6 health every 5 seconds (2.4 per tick) for 1 hour.
Overview: Better than the Weak variety. As I said before, since this buff now
works in combat, it's quite valuable.
Elixir of Defense
-----------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 130
Use Level: 16
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
1 - Wild Steelbloom
1 - Stranglekelp
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases armor by 150 for 1 hour.
Overview: An improvement over the original Elixir of Defense. Still helpful to
all characters (especially tanks), but you may still need to drink this
before engaging your own armor buff.
Fire Oil
--------
Type: Reagent
Skill Level: 130
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
2 - Firefin Snapper
1 - Empty Vial
Description: Reagent for some alchemy recipes.
Overview: Used in the Elixir of Firepower, Elixir of Greater Firepower, and
Fire Protection potions--not that good in itself unless you're a fire mage.
Possibly you can get a tailor or enchanter to buy some, but I wouldn't
count on it.
Shadow Protection Potion
------------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 135
Use Level: 17
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Christoph Jeffcoat in Hillsbrad Foothills (Horde), Harklan
Moongrove in Ashenvale (Alliance).
Ingredients:
1 - Grave Moss
1 - Kingsblood
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Absorbs 675 to 1125 shadow damage. Lasts up to 2 minutes. 2
minute cooldown.
Overview: OK, this is a little more like it. There'll be a few places where
you may encounter a good amount of shadow magic--both priests and warlocks
make extensive use of shadow magic. Still, this won't hold out very long
in many of the L30+ dungeons, so beware. Enchanters and Tailors also have
a couple recipes using this.
Elixir of Firepower
-------------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 140
Use Level: 18
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Any Expert Alchemist.
Ingredients:
2 - Fire Oil
1 - Kingsblood
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases spell fire damage by up to 10. Lasts 30 minutes.
Overview: Well, if you are a caster that uses a lot of fire spells (usu. mage,
possibly warlock), you can use this, but otherwise it's pretty much
useless.
Elixir of Lesser Agility
------------------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 140
Use Level: 18
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: Chests or L21-35 mobs, in Duskwood, Thousand Needles, Wetlands,
Ashenvale, Hillsbrad Foothills, Arathi Highlands, Gnomeregan, Scarlet
Monastery, Blackfathom Deeps, Razorfen Kraul. Rare drop.
Ingredients:
1 - Wild Steelbloom
1 - Swiftthistle
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases agility by 8 for 1 hour.
Overview: Another rare drop for a more powerful version of the original Elixir
of Minor Agility. Still useful for melee classes (esp. rogues) and
Hunters, and also used in a leatherworking recipe.
Elixir of Ogre's Strength
-------------------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 150
Use Level: 20
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: Can be found off several mobs L24-35, but the best place to look
is against the Splinter Fist ogres in Duskwood (especially the Fire Mongers
and Fire Weavers). The Mudsnouts in Hillsbrad (esp. Shamans) also work.
Ingredients:
1 - Wild Steelbloom
1 - Swiftthistle
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases strength by 8 for 1 hour.
Overview: Melee classes will love this, especially tanks. I've heard this
potion actually sells fairly well on some servers, so have a look at your
AH to see if it is. It might be worth it to start selling this potion.
Free Action Potion
------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 150
Use Level: 20
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Alchemy suppliers in Ironforge, Darnassus, and Orgrimmar.
Ingredients:
2 - Blackmouth Oil
1 - Stranglekelp
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Prevents Stun and Movement Impairing effects for the next 30
seconds, but does not cure effects already on imbiber.
Overview: You have to be a bit proactive for this to really be effective. If
you're stunned before you use this, it won't really do anything except
prevent you from being Stunned again. Some classes will find it more
useful than others.
3. Expert Level Recipes [ALCH_EXP]
----------------------------------
Now it starts to get interesting. To learn this level, you have to find the
Artisan alchemist for your faction. The Alliance one is in Darnassus; the
Horde one is in the Undercity. Those trainers also teach you some recipes for
that range of levels. (At the end of this tier, you'll find the Transmute
recipes, which come into their own at Artisan level.)
Greater Healing Potion
----------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 155
Use Level: 21
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity)
Ingredients:
1 - Liferoot
1 - Kingsblood
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Restores 455 to 585 health.
Overview: Sells for a good amount of cash at the auction house (~1g per stack
of 5 last I checked), but you'll definitely want to make some for yourself
as well, no matter your class.
Mana Potion
-----------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 160
Use Level: 22
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity)
Ingredients:
1 - Stranglekelp
1 - Kingsblood
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Restores 455 to 585 mana.
Overview: If you're a magic user, get some of these. They really are handy in
a pinch. Especially if you play a mage the way I do, using up mana like
there's no tomorrow--you may run out in the middle of battle, and end up in
a situation where if you don't recharge it quick, you and/or someone else
will die.
Fire Protection Potion
----------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 165
Use Level: 23
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Nandar Branson, Southshore, Hillsbrad Foothills (Alliance).
Jeeda, Sun Rock Retreat, Stonetalon Mountains (Horde). Limited supply.
Ingredients:
1 - Small Flame Sac (get off dragonkin, levels 25+)
1 - Fire Oil
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Absorbs 975 to 1625 fire damage. Lasts up to 2 minutes. 2 minute
cooldown.
Overview: Mages have Fire Ward, but even that isn't always as effective as this
potion can be. Lots of NPC casters (and some non-casters!) use fire
attacks, so this could turn out useful to you. The ingredients aren't
exactly standard issue, but the flame sacs drop fairly frequently off
dragonkin, especially in the Badlands and Feralas.
Lesser Invisibility Potion
--------------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 165
Use Level: 23
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity)
Ingredients:
1 - Fadeleaf
1 - Wild Steelbloom
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Gives imbiber lesser invisibility for 15 seconds. 10 minute
cooldown.
Overview: This is a fun little potion to use. Use it to slip past enemies (or
hostile players) undetected. The biggest drawback is that the potion
doesn't work in combat, so you can't use it to "slip" a target lock, and
you're revealed if you're attacked or begin attacking. The second
drawback, of course, is the 10 minute cooldown. The third drawback is that
the potion can't be used to slip past elites, so don't try. Ultimately, a
semi-useful potion at best, a curiosity at worst.
Shadow Oil
----------
Type: Oil
Skill Level: 165
Use Level: 24
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Bliztik in Raven Hill, Duskwood (Alliance), Montarr in Thousand
Needles (Horde)
Ingredients:
4 - Fadeleaf
4 - Grave Moss
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Gives a melee weapon 15% chance on hit to cast Shadowbolt III.
Lasts 30 minutes.
Overview: This potion is used to craft a higher level shadow protection potion,
so it retains some use in the later game. It's also used by other
professions to craft some items. And of course, tanks can use this as an
additional method to hold the enemy's attention.
Elixir of Fortitude
-------------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 175
Use Level: 25
Found From: Trainer, Drop
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity). Occasionally can be found as a drop. If you see it in
the Auction House, MAKE SURE it's lower than the trainer's price before
buying it.
Ingredients:
1 - Wild Steelbloom
1 - Goldthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases maximum health by 120 for 1 hour.
Overview: Good news, it stacks with Stamina buffs. Bad news, 120 isn't *that*
much health...but like its "minor" version, it can make a difference.
Great Rage Potion
-----------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 175
Use Level: 25
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Ulthir in Darnassus, Hagrus in Orgrimmar. Limited supply.
Ingredients:
1 - Large Fang (drops off various L26-43 beasts, usually predators)
1 - Kingsblood
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Adds 30 to 60 Rage.
Overview: Verbatim from Rage Potion: For warriors only (druids in bear form
can't use it). The biggest problem with this potion is that it operates on
the same cooldown as healing potions, but there are a few times when this
can be useful (as opposed to said healing potion).
Mighty Troll's Blood Potion
---------------------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 180
Use Level: 26
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: From chests and L35+ enemies in equivalent zones and instances.
Fairly rare drop.
Ingredients:
1 - Liferoot
1 - Bruiseweed
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Regenerate 12 health every 5 seconds (4.8 per tick) for 1 hour.
Overview: Good news is that the potion is easy to make. Bad news is it's a
rare drop. More good news is this potion works in combat now, and even at
higher levels it could be a lifesaver.
Elixir of Agility
-----------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 185
Use Level: 27
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity).
Ingredients:
1 - Stranglekelp
1 - Goldthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases agility by 15 for 1 hour.
Overview: Ah, here we go. Finally an agility elixir that doesn't require a
rare drop. Rogues at L27 or above will love this. And yes, there's still
a leatherworking recipe that uses this.
Elixir of Frost Power
---------------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 190
Use Level: 28
Found From: Quest Reward.
Look For It: Metzen the Reindeer quest. Given only during Feast of Winter's
Veil. Also looted from "presents" during that time.
Ingredients:
2 - Wintersbite
1 - Khadgar's Whisker
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases spell frost damage by 15. Lasts 30 minutes.
Overview: Well, if you are a caster that uses a lot of frost spells (read:
frost mage), you can use this, but otherwise it's pretty much useless. At
least if you *are* a frost mage, this will stack with wizard oils.
Frost Protection Potion
-----------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 190
Use Level: 28
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Drovnar Strongbrew, Refuge Pointe, Arathi Highlands (Alliance).
Glyx Brewright, Booty Bay, Stranglethorn Vale (Neutral). Limited supply.
Ingredients:
1 - Wintersbite
1 - Goldthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Absorbs 1350 to 2250 frost damage. Lasts up to 2 minutes. 2
minute cooldown.
Overview: Ugh. Basically only a few enemies (usually mages) will use frost
damage. Against those few this is useful, but I don't think this blocks
the slowing effects of frost damage--and that's the real killer, not the
damage itself. (If it *does* block the slowing effects, then this is more
useful than I thought.)
Nature Protection Potion
------------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 190
Use Level: 28
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Bronk, Camp Mojache, Feralas (Horde). Alchemist Pestlezugg,
Gadgetzan, Tanaris (Neutral). Limited supply.
Ingredients:
1 - Liferoot
1 - Stranglekelp
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Absorbs 1350 to 2250 nature damage. Lasts up to 2 minutes. 2
minute cooldown.
Overview: Some enemies (mostly shamans and druids, plus some treants and
similar creatures as well) will use nature damage. Some poison effects
(such as from spiders, scorpions, and rogues) also deal Nature damage.
Elixir of Detect Lesser Invisibility
------------------------------------
Type: Elixir (typeless)
Skill Level: 195
Use Level: 29
Found From: Drop.
Look For It: From chests and L35+ enemies in equivalent zones and instances.
Rare drop.
Ingredients:
1 - Khadgar's Whisker
1 - Fadeleaf
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Grants "detect lesser invisibility" buff for 10 minutes.
Overview: Not very useful at all. Well, OK, if you're in PvP against a group
of people that like to vanish from sight, this is useful...IF they're using
the cheaper variety of invisibility potion, and IF they're not "stealthing"
(like rogues).
Elixir of Greater Defense
-------------------------
Type: Guardian Elixir
Skill Level: 195
Use Level: 29
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity).
Ingredients:
1 - Wild Steelbloom
1 - Goldthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Increases defense by 250 for 1 hour.
Overview: What can I say that hasn't been said before? Still useful to all
players.
Catseye Elixir
--------------
Type: Elixir (typeless)
Skill Level: 200
Use Level: 30
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity).
Ingredients:
1 - Goldthorn
1 - Fadeleaf
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Improves chances of detecting stealth for 10 minutes.
Overview: Better than the invisibility detection potion, because a lot more
characters and mobs use stealth than invisibility. You may be better off
using other potions or abilities, but this is certainly better than
nothing, especially if you *know* enemies will be using stealth. If a
bunch of players are using this at once, chances are that stealthed enemies
aren't going to be able to avoid their collective gaze.
Frost Oil
---------
Type: Oil
Skill Level: 200
Use Level: 30
Found From: Vendor.
Look For It: Bro'kin in Alterac Mountains (Neutral). Limited supply.
Ingredients:
4 - Khadgar's Whisker
2 - Wintersbite
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Gives a melee weapon 10% chance on hit to cast Frostbolt. Lasts
30 minutes.
Overview: Mostly it's used by other professions to craft some items. Still,
tanks can use this as an additional method to hold the enemy's attention,
and maybe slow its attacks and movement down a bit.
Greater Mana Potion
-------------------
Type: Potion
Skill Level: 205
Use Level: 31
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity)
Ingredients:
1 - Khadgar's Whisker
1 - Goldthorn
1 - Leaded Vial
Description: Restores 700 to 900 mana.
Overview: And here we have another big mana potion. Can I really say anything
here that I haven't said before?
Oil of Immolation
-----------------
Type: Battle Elixir
Skill Level: 205
Use Level: 31
Found From: Trainer.
Look For It: Ainethil (Alliance, in Darnassus); Doctor Herbert Halsey (Horde,
in the Undercity)
Ingredients:
1 - Firebloom
1 - Goldthorn
1 - Crystal Vial
Description: Does 50 fire damage to any enemies within a 5 yard radius of the
caster every 3 seconds for 15 seconds.
Other Notes: Very useful for the priests' Benediction quest--thanks, Wyrmrider!
Overview: Eh. Not the most useful potion, though if you're a tank you can use
it to hold the attention of the enemies. Might draw more attention than
you want in that case, though. Priests need it for their Benediction
quest (thanks, Wyrmrider), though, so there's that.
