Unreal Tournament
Review by itoilet9
"Take Unreal, and slice out the storyline, and you get UT."
Unreal Tournament was Epic's answer to those out there who wanted better multiplayer support out of unreal. instead of taking unreal and making another game in the series, Epic decided to make an unreal completely dedicated to the power of multiplayer.
Instead of a storyline, this game offers up 6 types of gameplay, including the old deathmatch, capture the flag, assault, team deathmatch, domination, and last man standing. this makes up for the ''not having a storyline'' part of the game.
There is really no difference in the gameplay aspect of the game. controls remail the same now, but there are few changes. they renamed some weapons(I.E the RazorJack is now the Ripper), and just took out the strategy part of it(well, not in the case of Assault). most of the deathmatch maps came from unreal anyway. all in all, the gameplay is outstanding, like it was in Unreal.
The graphics are nothing new. the graphics are still really good, like they were in unreal. but UT brought more graphical issues than unreal did. I do not know about you, but i had to troubleshoot UT for 3 days before i could get it to display graphics correctly. i just think that epic should have included better video support in UT.
I forgot to say it up there, but there is actually a bit of storyline in this game. the object of the game is to win your way through the tournament and fight the big boss of the tournament, Xan. that's all there is for a storyline, and epic did a ''alright'' job on it, it just did not make me say ''thats one nice storyline''. UT is meant for the multiplayer aspect of it, like over a network or something.
The life span of this game is really short unless you have internet or a friend who likes to play UT a lot. without someone else to play with, it gets boring quick. unless you download more maps or something, you will get bored with killing bots and capping flags.
The sound was great. whenever you walk near lava or water, you hear splashes, and the music sounded really great. the sound effects of blowing things to bits, or the sound of explosions, these all put a grin on my face.
Heres a recap:
Gameplay
Pro-Not much different from Unreal
Con-...but, Unreal had some problems with gameplay, and these carried over to UT.
Storyline
Pro-Storyline is very straightforward and simple.
Con-but people use UT for it's multiplayer capabilities.
Lifespan
Pro-Very fun playing it...
Con-...for the first week.
Sound
Pro-Sounds are very ambient and very nice...
Con-...Only if you have a good sound card.
Final Decision
I really think that anyone who liked Unreal should buy this game. this game rocks, and is very good if you are one of the crowd that thought unreal needed better multiplayer support. Final Score 9/10
