Frequently Asked Questions
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
What are holiday items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
On three specific holidays, the Jagex Company treats their fellow RuneScape
players by dropping special items. These items relate to the holiday that is
currently being celebrated. Some holiday items are edible, some are wieldable,
and some have special, unique uses.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
What holidays are these items dropped?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The only three holidays celebrated in RuneScape are Easter, Christmas, and
Halloween.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Will they drop these items on any other holidays?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
No. The Jagex Company is located in Britain and certain holidays, which are
celebrated in other countries, are not celebrated in Britain.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Where and when are these items dropped?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The time and location of the holiday item drops are random. Jagex will drop
theses items all throughout the day.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
How many of these items are dropped during a spawn?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The average amount of items dropped during a spawn is hard to determine. These
items are dropped all over the RuneScape map. Each spawn has a different
amount of items being dropped. In the older holiday spawns, such as the
Christmas crackers, Jagex would drop a small little group of the items,
usually around six in each bunch. In more recent holiday spawns, Jagex spaced
the items out all over the RuneScape map, for they are no longer dropped in
little groups.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
What's the deal with these system messages during the holidays?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
System messages are normally used to warn players about upcoming server
crashes, but holidays are a different story. Jagex will use these system
messages to personally wish you a happy holiday. Normally, Jagex will send
out the system messages moments before an item is about to be dropped.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
What's the best place to pick up these holiday items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The best thing to do when you are desperate for a holiday item is to go where
there are very few to no people. Holiday items are also dropped in the
wilderness, which is, pretty much, a deserted area.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
What determines the value of these items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The rarity of the holiday item determines the value.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
How does the rarity of a holiday item change?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The Jagex Company drops only a specific amount of holiday items and no more
will ever be produced, with the exception of scythes and bunny ears. There
are only two possible ways that this specific number can decrease: if a
RuneScape player casts an alchemy spell on a holiday item or if a RuneScape
player happens to drop a holiday item and let it sit for a few minutes,
causing it to vanish. Of course, most RuneScape players aren't that careless
and usually guard these items with their lives, so the risk of this happening
is minimal. The main reason that holiday items increase in rarity follows the
point in the party hat value question. Players tend to collect the holiday
items, store them in their bank accounts, and refuse to sell them.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Why are party hats so high in value?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
When party hats were first introduced in the RuneScape world, they were very
common and had no store value. In fact, they were so common that players
would sell them to the general stores for absolutely no profit. Later, some
players decided to increase the rarity of party hats by collecting them and
storing them away in their bank accounts. These players would go around
buying every party hat in sight. Because of the low value of party hats, they
collected so many that the hats started to disappear. This seriously affected
the RuneScape economy. At first, players were giving up expensive pieces of
armor for these worthless, paper hats. Yet, after seeing how the prices were
jumping, players decided to hold on to their hats and refused to sell them,
which increased the value even more. Soon, these worthless hats became
treasured collectors items that sold for millions upon millions of gold
pieces.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Why does the color of a holiday item determine its value?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
There are two sides to this story. First off; party hats were randomly
created from Christmas crackers. The color of the party hat could never be
determined. This random number event caused specific colors to be more common
than others were; some were more rare. At first, the color difference weren't
too large until blue and pink party hats were stored away more than others
were. Another event that affected the color difference were the duplications.
The duplicators knew that pink party hats were most rare at the time, so they
focused specifically on duplicating them. Before long, pink party hats were
so common that, they fell to be one of the least valuable party hats, causing
blue party hats to skyrocket in price. The other side of the color values
involves Halloween masks. The same numbers of different color masks were in
fact dropped. To explain, I shall refer to the storage reasoning. Like
rarity situations, RuneScape players stored masks as they wished in their
banks, causing different colors to alter in rarity.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Why can't I trade certain holiday items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
After noticing how wealthy players were becoming from these holiday items,
Jagex decided to make a couple fair rules with future drops. First, holiday
items can no longer be traded amongst other players. Second, only one of each
specific holiday item is allowed per account. Third, these items can no
longer be sold to the general stores. Fourth, holiday items can no longer be
drop transferred.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Why did Jagex cancel the holiday drop on Christmas of 2003?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The answer can be found on the Jagex home page under the RuneScape news
section. One reason was that Jagex was too busy working on the RuneScape
sequel. The other reason was because of what madness the past holiday items
have caused.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
What random items can come out of a Christmas cracker?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The list of random items that Christmas crackers produce Is quiet large. Yet,
not all of them are known because RuneScape players did not come together to
collect the information. Some of those items include: gold ring, 1 iron ore
certificate, black dagger, chocolate bar, partial chocolate cake, unicorn
horn, spinach roll, silk, and other useless items. A Christmas cracker will
never produce a quest item.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Is there any possible way to trade a scythe/bunny ears?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
No, and there never will be. Don't even attempt it. Avoid buying these items
from other players; it is a definite scam.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Do the monsters in RuneScape ever drop holiday items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
No. This is one of the biggest rumors in all of RuneScape. It is not
possible, and it never will be, for a monster to ever drop a holiday item.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Are there any other ways to get these items after they are dropped?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
There are a few possibilities. Yet, most importantly, the specific item will
never be dropped directly from Jagex ever again. The only ways to receive
these items after they are done being dropped are the following. Buying the
items from fellow RuneScape players could be considered either an easy or a
difficult option, due to money reasons. Not only can you buy them, you also
have the possibility of player killing someone to steal it from his or her
inventory. Scamming is considered an option but it is not recommended because
it is against the RuneScape rules. The last option is only aimed towards
scythes and bunny ears. If you happen to lose one of these items, you can
travel to Varrock clothes shop and receive a new one for no price.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Why did Jagex drop scythes on multiple days?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
Not all RuneScape players were able to get their hands on a scythe.
Therefore, Jagex received massive complaints about the unique times scythes
were dropped and rescheduled more spawns.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Can I dye holiday items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
This is also another one of the biggest rumors in RuneScape. No, it is not
possible to dye party hats or Halloween masks. If it were possible, then
there would be no specific value for each color because the rarity would
constantly change.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
How do I duplicate holiday items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
You can't so don't even try. It is against the RuneScape rules.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
How did people manage to duplicate items?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The process is unknown to many. The only known information is that some fool
was messing around with an Auto Rune cheating program. This person was
attempting to trade a scythe, failed, and yet later realized that this program
could duplicate items in a specific way. Fortunately, Jagex later took care
of the bug.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Who discovered the duplication bug?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The main duplicator is a RuneScape player that goes by the name SixFeetUnder.
This person, and those he taught the bug to, were all banned.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Why do you not list holiday item prices?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
The main reason is because prices are constantly changing and it all depends
on the barters that take place. The guide would need constant updating and
would not always be accurate.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
How can I find out the holiday item prices?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
Other than standing around the main market observing every deal that takes
place, you can always talk to other players to find out prices of these items.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Are they going to drop party hats again next year?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
This is again one of the most common rumors in RuneScape. Players constantly
ask if specific items will be dropped again next year, in hopes that they can
easily pick something up off the ground & become a millionaire. First, check
this guide for the correct date that certain holiday items were dropped.
Then, if you read the other FAQs, you will notice that holiday items only are
dropped on one specific day and never again, with the exception of scythes.
Do not rely on holiday items for unfair wealth. Do not ever expect to pick an
item off the ground and become rich with a few simple clicks. It does not
work that way.
/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\-/\
Did holiday items change after the RuneScape sequel was released?
\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/-\/
Very few changes actually took place in the new RuneScape game. The most
obvious change was the different appearance of the items. Also, some of the
character status affects that wieldable items had were either removed or
dramatically changed. According to most players, what appeared to be pink
party hats in RuneScape Classic have become purple in the new RuneScape. The
other change, which isn't too noticeable, involves the different wording of
item examination description.

Duplication Issue
\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/\/
On the night of November 6, 2003, there were several rumors going around that
RuneScape items could now be duplicated. Not much later, a record amount of
party hat owners and sellers show up in world one market and begin to sell
them for very cheap prices. Near the end of the day, several merchants were
selling full inventories of pink party hats for nearly three fourths of the
price. Fellow RuneScape players become suspicious.
On November 7, 2003, Jagex has announced that a major bug has been discovered
and that several RuneScape players were duplicating items, mainly party hats
and Christmas crackers. These duplications are against the RuneScape rules
but even more importantly; it highly effected the RuneScape economy. Prices
dropped dramatically and several players have quit the game because of high
money losses. Jagex announces that they will reward the first person to
report how the bug works a free lifetime membership. Within a couple hours,
Jagex receives over 600 messages and they quickly shut down all the RuneScape
servers at approximately 10:45 A.M. (United States Central time). The bug is
quickly fixed yet no actions have been taken against the duplicators and
duplications. Jagex also announces that they are trying their best to take
care of the unfair wealth and cheaters. They advise their fellow RuneScape
players to neither buy nor sell any party hats and to drop any party hats you
currently own in which you believe could be a duplication.
Unsurprisingly, RuneScape players don't listen to a word that Jagex says. That
very night, numerous low level characters stand around world 1 market trying
to purchase and sell party hats at very low prices. The RuneScape economy
seems doomed because of the tragic money losses. Very few actually understand
what this bug was and how it worked. It is still unknown as to what actions
Jagex will take against these duplications and tragic money losses. Majority
of the on-going rumors say that the duplicates will be easy to spot and delete
from the Jagex database. Other rumors say that party hats will finally be un-
tradable to control all the unfair wealth and greed.
/\/\/\/\/\/\
Weeks later
\/\/\/\/\/\/
Still not everything has been taken care of. The Christmas cracker duplicates
have been deleted but duplicated party hats are still among us and the prices
are still at an all time low. Rumors of party hats being dropped again were
going around yet it was not true. Unfortunately, this seems like the end of
the duplication issue. Party hats are everywhere and the prices are low yet
still rising.
/\/\/\/\/\/\
Months later
\/\/\/\/\/\/
A final update. The results are finally verified. Yes, the few players that
understood the duplication bug were in fact banned. The bug was fixed,
duplicated Christmas crackers were deleted, but party hat duplications are
still around. Party hat prices are finally rising very slowly and will
eventually pass the recent peaks. There are no more worries about value
drops. The whole ordeal is over.

Future Drops
\/\/\/\/\/\/
Many rumors about future drops have been going around. Some say that Jagex
has put a stop to holiday items because of the unfair wealth that they have
caused. Yet, if Jagex does continue holiday item drops, the rules that were
placed upon bunny ears and scythes will affect all future holiday drops.
Yet, after 2 holiday item cancellations, it seems as if this is the end of all
the holiday drops. Certain events might take place during holidays in the new
RuneScape but never in the classic version.
