"Walkin' Scarecrows and VooDoo....."
Sega CD was pretty much one of those systems that had a lot of good things going for it, but it was way limited on the technology that could have made it a contender. With a ton of games that actually made an impact, you have to take a step back from what we have now, and take a look at it from a different perspective, like ten years ago! You'll find titles like Night Trap, Sewer Shark, and this arcade gem Corpse Killer that really didn't have much of a chance on this slow coming system. You take the role of a solider who is dropped into a rather un inhabitable part of an island who has come to save his fellow team members! You'll find that the island is loaded with strange creatures, and living scarecrows who are looking to make you a part of the island on a more permanent basis. Through your little jaunt on the island, you'll receive help from a girl and hippie looking guy, both of which will give you direction through the island, as will your satellite radar which shows the locations of special bullets called Datura bullets, which give you the ability to put the tougher monsters away!
-Game Play 7/10-
It's point and shoot action with a little bit of exploring rolled into the mix. You have to travel through the island, and find your comrades while fending off magical beings that are looking to kill you for some odd reason! You'll find items in your quest that will help you on your way, and as the story goes on, you'll dive a little deeper into the true mystery behind the island. As with most games of this era, you'll find that it's a little slower than what you're used to, but you have to stop and pace yourself to the age of the game before you can truly enjoy it!
-Control 6/10-
The Genesis interface was always poor with the CD games, and you'll see that Corpse Killer is no different. With a three button controller, you'll have a firing button and a menu operating button, both of which you'll need to continue your quest. Again, you'll have to shift gears to the speed of the game and learn timing above all else if you're looking to make it through.
-Visuals 7/10-
It's grainy, and it's a little hard to see, but once your eyes adjust to the game, you'll have no problem with seeing what there is to see. Lush environments and some pretty original monsters is what gives this game it's visual flare, and with a little adjustment, you'll find this to be rather decent looking game!
-Audio 7/10-
Something the Sega CD did excel at, was with the audio portions of the game! Clear speech comes through the game with real crystal clarity, but the music does have plenty to be desired. Music here isn't much to listen to, and even the music that pops up doesn't quite match the tone or the attitude of the game, so find something else to listen to!
-Overall 7/10-
While not a ground breaking game, it is pretty fun to play, and the fact that the Sega CD with all of its shortcomings did try to do a good job with it. While not quite up to speed with games such as Sewer Shark and Jurassic Park, Corpse Killer does have a certain aura about it that makes it worth a look and a small shelling out of cash to buy!
