Doom

"Just as good as the pc version or windows version at 320x200"
Well to start off I just want to remind everyone that this game came out in 1994 when the 32x came out and it pisses me off when people even try or think of comparing this game to new games that are over 5 years newer like half life and quake I mean come on thats being blind and retarded. Anyways lets go back to 1994.
Graphics 8: Well some of you might be thinking why a 10 compared to other reviews but I'm being truthful here. The resolution is the same as the pc version when it first came out (dos version) and the colors are the same except the mug (characters head) is really toned down and so are the numbers like the ammo and health. Lots of people say it looks crapier than the pc dos version but it doesn't, thats only because you have a bad television or your using the coaxial cable which is crap. Try a tv with 500 lines of resolution, 3 line digital comb filter and a super vr picture tube with the av cables and it will look just as razor sharp and color perfect as a monitor. All the frames of animation are here also, except your mug (characters head) which doesnt show him get ticked off when he gets hurt or smile when you get a new weapon. The toxic ooze has all the animation except theres one part on level 3 were it's just frozen solid. The enemies only have the front view of animation so sometimes when you look right at one they don't do anything because your actually behind them (notice the game case shows different angles of the enemies. what liers). There are only 17 levels: one hidden one and the first two episodes. Well Everything looks just like the pc version except for the missing things I said.
Sound 8: Wow this is truly excellent for the genesis sound, hell, even the loudness of the enemie groans in the background change depending on how far away you are. When you use a dts surround system or any good stereo there is no graininess at all and is just as good as the pc version. Way better than the hollow sounds of the super nintendo version. Well all the pc sound is here except for the following. When the zombies yell kinda loud (WHA AA!) when they die, when the imps die they only have one of there dying sounds, when you teleport theres a shotgun reload sound in certain spots otherwise theres no sound, and when you punch a guy theres no punch sound. Well overall big deal it still sounds like i'm playing the pc version but the sound does get cut off alot when alot of sounds are coming at once especially with the chainsaw but the sound quality is awesome for an old crappy yamaha sound chip.
Music 2: PURE CRAP!! I only gave it a two for even having a rythm and being able to do anything. THANK GOD YOU CAN TURN IT OFF! Shows how fuc**ng nasty that old synthesizer is even though it could have been a bit better. Super nintendo one has way better music.
Controls 8 (6 button controller): Everything is fine and right were you need it with a 6 button controller, but with a 3 button which I don't have or want. I imagine it's just as hard to control with a 3 button controller as it is to eat pizza in one hand, (im refering to a guy doing this)pop on the other and piss straight into the toilet without gleeking everywere on the seat and floor (who would do that and who would want to play with a 3 button controller). The only flaw is the strafing which you can do but you can't turn and strafe at the same time it is good enough to beat the game at ultra violence. You can also grab your weapon right away if you memorize the button combinations with the mode button (this is one of the only games I use the mode button with very often).
Gameplay 7: Holy crap! I can't beleive the genesis processor is making this thing run at 25 frames per second. Yeah sometimes it goes down just a little bit in big environments but it's still pretty damn smooth. Also you can pick your level (1-15) but I think it's fun to play ultra violence straight through from level 1 and get to go to level 16 which is extremely hard if your lacking ammo. There is a hidden level (17) which you can go to and the secret is in level 3. The controls are responsive but the doors close quicker and some secrets are hard to get to because the doors close faster and I notice some people had tough problems playing which I don't know why and thats why I give it a 7.
Well for a genesis 32x game this game deserves an 8 from my humble opinion. I'm a big doom fan and I enjoy it even more than playing quake 3. I do tend to play it more on my 32x than my pc version cause you just pop the cartridge in and your set (Life on the edge, know what I mean). I was expecting this game to be alot worse because, MAN this thing is only a 24 meg cartridge. Look at all the stuff they crammed in that little space. I'm pretty impressed. They probly could have added all the missing things if they could have afforded it to go into a 32 meg cartridge (I'm pretty sure they could have afforded it) or made another version for the sega cd 32x. I'm sure they could have made the other two episodes on a different cartridge with the lock on technology that they used with sonic and knuckles (sonic 3 attached with sonic and knuckles was a whopping 34 meg cartridge. Pretty damn good huh). One of the most important things that I have from this game is lots and lots of fun (It's really cool when you have the volume loud on a nice stereo and you run into a demon. You can feel the bass of it's growl when it bites and you can feel the bass when it goes thump on the ground after you kill it). Well I hope my review helped whoever's nuts enough to buy this game nowadays (If you buy a 32x and sega genesis just to play the 32x version of doom you might be a... well never mind).
