Doom

Review by grandiaman

"The popular FPS PC game makes it to the 32X. But is it worth buying in the first place?"

Doom. A game that drew many buyers during its tenure on the PC game sales markets. Put the name ID software really on the PC game developing map. Now move on to 1994. The very ill-fated 32X has been released, generating a short wave of interest for a small period. It is in the waning months of 1994 that this game was released, acclaimed as the most perfect home console port released of this game. But does that make this game worth buying? Read on!

Info: 15 levels- less levels than the DOS version
Developed by: Id Software Published by: Sega of America

Rated on:
Sound, Graphics, Gameplay, Story, Replay, Control:

Sound: The sound consists of ''Bang'' ''Grunt'' ''Sigh'' and a few interesting noises, and so on. Nothing really amazing to be had here, just an average sounding game, even average for the console. This all adds up to a score of...: 5

Graphics: decent graphics, which are perfectly emulated from the DOS format that this game is ported from. The graphics, consisting of sprites(characters, items) and polygons(environments), though low resolution, still look fairly good. The main problem with this games graphics is that the game is overly dark in places. YES I know that it is supposed to look like this in places, but sometimes this amounts to just plain annoyance. But this is just more nitpicking by me, and probably, there couldn't have been more power exerted by the 32X. Otherwise the graphics are pretty good, and suit the game just fine. They aren't the best graphics exerted by the system (Knuckles Chaotix looks better), but they are pretty good for the system, considering the system was known more as an 2D system at heart. All in all--- 8.5

Story--

Mostly the story is pretty most nonexistent, understandably because the main draw of the game is action, but no real story adds up my frustrations on the game. The story that is there is very uninteresting and it doesn't develop(Throughout action, this game just displays, in order, hack, slash, and hack again, meaning I wouldn't give a damn). Heck! Even Super Mario Brothers can display a story, meaning a story doesn't need to be in words or videos, but this game displays no type of story at all(other than the 40 word instruction book explanation). This game deserves a 0.5 in the story department.

Control:

The control supports good strafing, and other features, shooting, and changing weapons responsively. The game supports the 6-Button pad, which is a nice feature.
I give this a 7.5.

Replay-
If you're the mood for a mindless rampage this game is waiting for you, meaning that it can be booted up quickly and played without a hitch. All the levels are enabled to boot also. A 7 is my score.

Gameplay-

OUCH. This game only gives straight FPS shooting action, with no positive feature to improve upon the gameplay. Disgusting- A 2.0 is this game's prize.

Overall- This is not a very good game. Sure this game might have sold very well on the PC formats, but unfortunately, that was for the most part because of the graphics. Sorry ID, graphics aren't everything. You should have put more emphasis on the gameplay+story, because this game needed much more to boot. --Overall score 3.2--- rounded to 3 for GAMEFAQS.
