Night Trap
Review by realathelete
"Still a great game years on....."
Lets start with the fact that I have owned this game since it's release all them years ago and have not played it for a long time.
I returned to it a few months ago and it is still as addictive and amusing as it used to be.
Graphics:
All of the graphics in this games are made up of slightly grainy FMV and suit the game well, they add tension as you wait around for enemies to catch, I give them a 7/10
Sound:
There is not much sound in this game (BGM anyway), as it is mostly peoples voices that you are litening to for 90% of the game, there are little touches of brilliance though and it just adds to the increasing sense of tension, 8/10
Controls:
These are very easy to master, A selects the new room, B activates the traps and C changes the colour password ( that can be annoying if you hit it by accident but that does not happen often) , the controls earn a decent 9/10 for their accesablilty
Gameplay:
This is one of the irritating parts of the game, you don't do much apart from change from camera to camera looking for enemies to catch. You occasionally have to change a colour-coded password and you do have to listed for the characters to tell you what that is.
It can be frustrating to have been 3 captured enemys short of the required amount and you re facing the game over screen for the 20th time but eventually you memorise the locations of the enemys and the game becomes a lot more enjoyable. the gameplay recieves a modest 6.5/10
Value for money:
Well, I would not spend $40 on this as it lasts for such a short time, I would say that if you could find this game in a bargain bin or in a second hand shop for around $10-15 then you have just snapped up a bargain. Purely because this game is so hard to get a hold of nowadays. I sold my Sega CD a few years ago but still play Night Trap on my P.C using an emulator. So if you find it cheap, yes very good value for money 8/10
Lifespan:
This game will hold the interest until you finish it, there is a hidden ending you can aquire by capturing all the enemies but there is not enough incentive to make you go back and do that.
The game itself will take about a week to a month to complete so the lifespan is a fairly poor 5/10
Overall:
An enjoyable game and one of the Sega CD's highlights, it's a shame that it does not last long enough but a worthy addition none the less, final score is 8/10
