Mortal Kombat II
Review by sdogg1m
"A near flawless conversion!!!"
If you enjoyed Mortal Kombat II at the arcades and wanted to own a copy for home play then MKII for the 32X is the only way to go! That is if you own a six-button controller.
Sound: 10
I was real shocked that the 32X could do so well with sound especially since the Genesis version of MKII was so horrible. Yet, every sound that I can think of from the Arcade version of MKII are in this game. Including Shao Khan's taunts and character selection sounds. The sound tracks are also well done and should be considered good quality for a cartridge game. In fact, unless you are extremely picky then you won't notice much different from the 32X and the arcade as far as sound is concerned.
Graphics: 9
The only thing that kept this category from being a 10 is that the fatalities are not entirely in tact for some of the characters. This includes Sub-Zero's Freeze Uppercut fatality in which frozen body fragments just disappear. However, there are many other details which make up for it include the Acid stage which has many of the hooks in tact including the one that comes down the middle of the screen in front of the fighters.
Game Play: 10
Some people mark down this category for the fact that you must own a 6 Button controller to get any enjoyment out of this game, however, it is unfair to do so. 6 button controllers had been very common and inexpensive when MKII was released and if you are a fan of fighter games then you owned one long before purchasing this game. The game play is a 10 because the control timing is perfect when manuevering with your character. Fatalities are also easy to perform. Of course anyone knew to the line of MK games are going to have troubles with the controls at first but that is to be expected.
Replay Value: 9
This game is nearly 10 years old and I still play it to this day. I even remember many of the fatality moves (And yes, I do have a life). The game is just that fun. This category was given a 9 because it is hard to find another person to play against due to the age of the game.
Overall, this is a wonderful port to the 32X and is far superior to the Genesis and SNES versions. The game may even compete with the Saturn (Which I have not played) and Playstation (Import) versions. Definitely a must have for the 32X as it will cost $20 or less to own.
