Doom

Review by eolsen

"If you own a 32x, get this game"

Though the Sega 32x never had its fair share of memorable titles release for it, it still had a few forgotten gems in its library, Doom being on of them. In my opinion it is probably the best game that was made for this system.

This rendition of Doom adds very little to the series of Doom games. All of the levels and monsters are directly copied from other Doom games. There are only fifteen different levels in this game. Though there were only fifteen levels, the ones that were picked were pretty decent levels, though none of them contained major bosses. One thing I did like about the levels in this game was that you can pick whatever level you start on, unfortunately, you will have only your pistol when you first start a game, no matter what level you choose. Unfortunately, if you don't like the level you are doing, you have to restart your system to choose another. There is no way to exit a game once you start it.

The graphics in this game stay pretty true to the original Doom for the PC. The title screen is a wonderful looking rendition of the marine shooting downward at some demons, which looks pretty cool. The graphics were smooth, however, not quite as good as the PC original, but not bad enough to take away from the game play experience.

The sound was alright in this game. Sound effects stayed true to the original, but the background music sounded like it may have been downgraded. The best Doom tunes from the original are sadly not featured in this game, and don't add as much suspense to the game play as in previous Doom games.

Controlling your character is decent. For basic players, the controls should be fine, but for a more advanced player who depends on easy button pushing to quickly maneuver out of the way of attacks will find it quite hard to do on this game. The A, B, and C buttons run, shoot, and strafe respectively. It is very hard to do a combination of two of these, and near impossible to do all three, which is necessary in hardcore Doom playing.

This game doesn't have that much replay value unfortunately. Since there are only fifteen levels it is pretty easy to run through all the levels and beat the game, and once you do that, there isn't much else to do in this game.

Final Words
If you have a 32x and are looking for a quick, fun game to play, this game is definitely right for you. And for the price of this game you can't go wrong. However, don't expect to get the full Doom experience out of this version of it, or be able to play nearly as well as you could on a PC version.
