"The Ur-Quan Masters"

Star Control II: The Ur-Quan Masters is a sequel to the the game Star Control: Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict, and is considered one the the best games of all time by many sources. Star Control II is often said to be the best representation of the Star Control series, so let us see some of the reasons why!

Game Play - 9/10

As an adventure game, SCII has you deal with various things such as diplomacy with the different species of the galaxy, lots resource harvesting sections, and combat when talking things out was just not an option. Also, with the addition of two player mode, you could have it out with your friends in great ship combat simulations.

Graphics - 6/10

Nothing too flashy, but for it's time it got the job done. The galaxy, ships and characters were all distinguishable, and the sub menus had good clarity in distinguishing between things in the game.

Sound - 10/10

This area is were the game really shines in a lot of aspects. Ships and characters noises were all clear and quirky, and anyone who plays this game just can't help but get some of the the more famous (or infamous) music that played for certain species.

Replay - 10/10

Here is where SCII really stands out. Very rarely (even more so for when this game came out) will you find a game with this big a world. The game has you exploring the huge galaxy in search of events, species, and star systems. Since the game is so open ended, and has a great amount of dialogue, there seems to be a constant supply of adventures.

Conclusion:

Star Control II is a game with a huge fan base, but stills seems to be virtually unknown by many gamers. It's cause and effect style game play was quite an innovation, and has since been duplicated many times by quite a few of the most popular game ever. With a great storyline and the awesome sound/music, there really is no reason that this game shouldn't be considered one of the greats. Hopefully with this review, more gamers will re-live this classic and experience one of the first great adventure games.
