Return Fire

Review by Saikyo Ki

"At least there was one successful series that started from the 3DO."

This game takes capture the flag on a huge tangent. It's not just a game anymore, it's WAR! The sequel to this game made its way to many different platforms, but it all started here. This is one of the best games on the 3DO hands down.

Story: N/A
Nope. Nothing here. Please drive through, thank you. :)

Gameplay: 9
Like said before, this is a capture the flag WAR. You and the computer (or another human) each control a military base. Obviously you have to get the flag and bring it back to your base, but you can accomplish this task in many ways. You have many army vehicles at your disposal:

The chopper is quick and shoots fast, but only has average attack strength and isn't very well armored.

The tank is the slowest, but is the best armored and is pretty strong.

The demolition van levels buildings like there's no tomorrow and is a little bit faster than the tank, but only has average armor.

The jeep is the fastest vehicle and has a special feature that allows it to convert into a boat to use to cross water, but you can forget about offense and defense. This is the only vehicle that can capture the flag, though.

Your base has gun turrets to help defend the flag, but you cannot control them and you can't repair them once they're taken out.

This game has a lot of strategic elements. For instance, you can destroy a bridge so your opponent is forced to use either the chopper or the jeep to get to that section of your base. If they're out of choppers, they're gonna be in big trouble.

There are many different maps you can play on, each requiring different strategies.

Graphics: 6
The gameplay is seen from a bird's eye view and rendered with polygons. Very slow frame rate, although the game is still completely playable. Detail on the textures and landscape is good.

Sound/Music: 8
The effects and music do a great job of putting you in the mood for war. To add a little bit of humor, when someone has captured the enemy flag, chase music in the form of the theme song from The Lone Ranger starts playing. It's pretty funny.

Control: 10
Nothing wrong here. Turning, moving forward and backward and shooting isn't hard at all. The only vehicle with an extra feature is the jeep, and all you have to do to activate the floatation option is press a button.

Replay Value: 8
There are many single player scenarios, and playing with someone else is always very fun.

Bottom Line?
This is one of the brightest stars of the 3DO game library. It combines action and strategy extremely well. People who love destruction will love this game and people who want to play a capture the flag game not in the form of an FPS will also find it extremely fun, which is why I give it a 9.
