"One of the best sleepers around"
This is probably the greatest game of all time that I give just an 8 too.
I personally Enjoy Mortal Kombat,Street Fighter and Marvel VS Capcom 2 more but this game is pretty close to being as good as those.
Graphics-10/10- Just like the Neo Geo/Arcade. Every Character is there and it includes the zoom in and zoom out feature. This is a lot better then the SNES,Genesis and Sega CD version.
The Sega CD and Genesis Version had large characters but no zoom, it was also missing Earth Quake, lots of slowdown too.
The Super Nintendo version had good graphics but the chracters were tiny, smaller then any ''sprites'' of any fighting game.
Overall this is the best looking Samurai Showdown uf you dont have a Neo Geo.
Sound 7/10- I remember the arcade sounding a lot better. This version sounds ok.Better then the Genesis and on par with the Super Nintendo. Should of been perfect since it is on a CD. No biggie. A cool thing is the Japanese language narrative in the beggining is all spoken so it feels authentic.
Control-9/10-The Panasonic Brand controller is horrendous for this game. The d pad can't pull off quarter circles(fireball motions) so get the Naki Brand Pads. Im not sure what other controllers will work well but I personally use the Naki Brand. My complaint here is you have to hold down the trigger button the press a,b, or c to kick.
I think the 2 top buttons should be kick, just eliminate the middle powered kick.
Even with 6 button controllers you cant fix the kick problem.
Fun Factor-8/10 I give it an 8/10 because like I said I personally like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter games better. The lack of characters also hurts this game slightly.Other then that this is one of the best 2d fighters ever.
My final word is this. Buy a 3do, they are about 30 bucks on ebay, this game is about $10.(thats how much I paid) For $40 you will own a unique system and one of the best near arcade perfect games ever. You pay $50 for new games on the newer consoles. This game blows away a lot of the new stuff.
Other then the 3do no other system pulled off a decent Samurai Showdown port.
SS fans your prayers are answered in the form of the 3do. I wanted this game for years and had no idea the 3do port was this good.
This is a great fighter that stood out in a sea of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter clones.
