Virtual Puppet Reika
Review by Alzarius
"This is an excellent example of what an interactive music/video cd could be."
This is one unusual title. After playing through this cd and going over the paperwork that comes with it, I have come to the conclusion that this is some sort of hybrid interactive music video cd. Apparently, Reika is a music artist in Japan. If she is a popular singer or not I couldn't say. Several options on the cd revolve around one song called Fallin' Love. The lyrics to this song can be found on the included fold out poster. One option (Club Reika (DJ)) shows you the complete music video for the song. You can also "make your own video" in a sense using the Video Clip Maker option. With this option, you are given the opportunity to change cameras during the video to show different angles/scenes while the song plays. The interesting part is that the song and the video play simultaneously while you are switching cameras. In other words, the video isn't separate from the song. When you change camera angles, you will still see the singer singing, but just from a different angle, or, more accurately, from a different point on the "set" which may not show the singer at all. This is a fairly rough explanation, but as an example, imagine taking your favorite music video and while it plays, you use a controller to change cameras. That's the best explanation for it. Another option (Virtual Puppet) has the song playing while you move a puppet around onscreen. It's a dancing puppet. Very strange indeed. There's also an option called Fashion Magazine "Peach". This appears to be another video in the form of a fashion show. Reika appears in different outfits and scenes while one of her songs plays in the background. There is another option called Sing Party. Sing Party is a trditional Karaoke video. The music and video play while Japanese song lyrics appear on the screen for you to sing along to. All in all, this is just one really unique title. It may have been created to promote the songs and the singer or maybe even to test the waters for future 3DO releases with this type of interactive cd. After going through this title a few times, I believe that this is an excellent example of what the 3DO was originally designed for. If there were more to do with each of the options, such as having each song as one of the options inside the main options, this would be a wonderful example of what music cds could become in the future.
Bizarre Scale(1-10, 10 being Bizarre): Freaky(6) ((The dancing puppet just raises the bar with this title.))
