"Fun at the time, I guess"
Keystone Capers is a simple platforming game for the Atari. I guess at the time when this was all people had it was pretty good, but it doesn't have any charm nowadays.
Graphics: 8/10
Well, they were good for the Atari. Although they're extrememly blocky nowadays, back then not too many games had sprites as large as the ones in this game. The cop looks pretty cool, and so does the robber (for the Atari at least.)
Sound: 1/10
You don't want to know. Just the usual incredibly screechy, doesn't sound anything like it should Atari-like sound effects. Now come on, Atari! You could have made the system more powerful and enable better sound effects! I don't even see why people would listen to them back in the days, even if it was all they had!
Gameplay: 3/10
Ain't much better. Although it's better than Pitfall and it has a little more variation in it, the levels are quite repetitive, and there isn't too much lasting appeal. I suppose this was all they had in the day, but that's kind of sad. Super Mario Bros beats this game so badly it's sad. All you do is run up and down platforms, trying to catch the robber until time runs out. There are a bunch of obstacles to slow you down as well. Well, it sure don't have the lasting appeal Super Mario Bros had, and it ain't any fun today like Mario is!
The challenge is actually pretty high. Everything gets a little crazy in the last couple levels.
The replay value isn't good. That's all I can say.
Overall: 3/10
Sheesh, I'm glad Atari's glory days are over with. I can't imagine what video games would be like if they had no more competitors!
