Review by Mike Truitt
"One of the classics"
Old school baby!!!! Asteroids is coming after ya! Blow up all of the asteroids before they get to you. Along with Frogger, Centipede, and Pac-Man, these games were the object of all the gaming talk in your parents era.
PROS:
An old game that has stood the test of time just as good as any other game out there.
Hours and hours of playing just to get your three initials on the top score list of the past 25 years.
Compared to many of the newer arcade games it is incredibly cheap.
CONS:
You might have to dust off this machine from your local arcade.
There are only black and white graphics, but it is only a con if you do not appreciate it.
GRAPHICS: 8/10
I can not give it a ten even though I really really want to. What can I say about these graphics is they are some serious old school. Not too much to brag about but they are still good, and when you think about the era the game was made in, these were great graphics.
AUDIO: 10/10
How in the world could you beat that good old ''doot doot doot doot doot doot'' of the arcade? In my opinion if every thing could only make that sound the world would be a much better place, and it we would all think that we were Charlie Brown (not quite waaa wa waaa wa waaaa but you get the joke). This is all assuming that you can still here the sound on the antique sound system.
CONTROLS: 10/10
How could these controls get any easier? I mean one button and a joystick, so simple it almost goes against any idea of controls in a game now. Now there are fourteen buttons on a playstation controller if you count the directional pad as one. Imagine all of the playstation games where there would only be one button. Not quite as simple. You have to appreciate this idea of one button.
GAMEPLAY: 10/10
If you like old school style games, you are going to love this because it is not based on old school style, it is old school. It will keep you plugging your money in the game wanting more, and it keeps on giving you want. It is a great game that is extremely fun to play no matter how old you are or where you come from.
REPLAYABILITY: 6/10
Unfortunately, once you have this game down it does not force to want to play it again, you just feel like you conquered a great game and want to move on to the next one in an attempt to become the worlds greatest video game player.
STORY LINE: 5/10
There really is not a story line to this game, and like many games of its era, the story line was pretty mcuh not taken seriously, and was not until the introduction of Final Fantasy and Zelda, now every game needs a story line, but back then it was not needed for a great game.
CHEATS: n/a
Cheats just like story lines were rarely put into a game because they were not needed, so they were not put in, and it would not be fair to penalize the game for this.
BUY RENT?:
Well it is kind of to buy an arcade game, but you should go out and play it.
OVERALL: 8/10
Overall this is a great game and you should go out and play it. The next time that you see it, don't be afraid to go and put in a quarter, in may just be a time warp.
