Tapper

Review by Neptune Star

"This game rocks!"

The Atari 2600 version of this arcade classic was the first I had ever played and I must say I'm impressed. It's fast and furious and requires you to constantly be on your toes.

You play a bartender who has to tend to dozens of customers who want their beer (actually it's Mountain Dew in the Atari 2600 version) NOW or else. You have about four or five different long bar counters and a beer tap for each counter. As the customers make their way down the length of the counter, it's your job to slide them each a drink before they reach the end of the counter and you're fired. You can't, however, throw too many drinks because if you supply more than needed, the extras will crash to the floor. One broken glass and you lose. What makes it even more challenging is the drinks that they sometimes send sliding back to you. You'll not only have to worry about supplying the drinks, but catching any returning ones before they crash to the floor. After beating a level you'll be brought to a bonus stage where a guy shakes up several drinks except one and then switches them all around. If you can pick out the unshaken drink when he's done switching them, you win.

The graphics are pretty good considering the system it's for, the bonus stage looks espescially nice. My question is, why is one of the dancing girls missing a face?? Creepy.

The music is great and you may find yourself humming the tunes. The main tune that plays during the first stage is "Oh Susanna". The tune that plays after you beat a level and the dancing girls come out is great as well. Great music and sound effects, overall.

Tapper is of course, a very rare game and you'll probably end up shelling out fifty bucks for a copy. If you do get a chance to play it, don't pass it up. You won't regret it. Definetely one of the highlights of the Atari 2600, next to the likes of Q*Bert, Frogger, Centipede, Millipede, and Kaboom.
