Despite its rather unfortunate demise, Sega's 128-bit Dreamcast showcased
some of the greatest games around, including Game Arts' Grandia II. This RPG,
featuring a fun and unique battle system along with a cast of hilarious char-
acters, is a blast to play, although it does *feel* kinda short (~30 hours).
No Dreamcast owner has an excuse for not picking up this excellent game!

This walkthrough WILL contain plot spoilers! Don't yell at me for ruining
the story for you, all right? ^_^

Grandia II's storyline, from the instruction manual...

THE LEGEND OF THE "BATTLE OF GOOD AND EVIL"

When the world was still young and yawned at every dawn's waking, Granas,
the God of Light, came. All was bathed in the holy light of Heaven. Thus,
those were the days of marvels.

Yet, there were those who sought the power to resist Granas, they found
power in Valmar, the God of Darkness. Power to release the energy bound up in
life. Power to unmake the world.

Thus, in those days, they made war.

The fighting continued endlessly, until the Sword of Granas pierced the
infinite darkness of Valmar. The mighty blow from Granas not only smashed
Valmar to pieces, but also carved several ugly scars in the very surface of
the planet.

These are the Granacliffs that survive even to the present; scars in the
land.

The reason why we call this earth the "Cursed Land."

Ryudo is a young Geohound, working odd jobs with his companion Skye. Known
for his ability to do just about ANY task, he quickly built a reputation as an
efficient workhorse. Willing to do what no one else wished to.

Bouncing from job to job in order to keep the gold flowing in, Ryudo
accepts, albeit grudgingly, a job involving the Church of Granas, in the
village of Carbo.

Once in Carbo, a beautiful voice carries on the wind, singing hymns to
Granas. Intrigued, Ryudo enters the nearby church and finds a Songstress,
Elena, practicing hard for an upcoming ceremony.

It is from here that Ryudo accepts his role, bodyguard to the Songstress
Elena.

And so two strangers head out on what seems to be a simple assignment...

This section covers the basics of Grandia II.

<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->
 <-   [5.1]   battle system                                                ->
<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<--<->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->-->
--------
Overview
--------
Grandia II throws a rather interesting battle system into the RPG genre with
its Initiative Point (IP) Gauge. While in battle, a blue gauge appears in the
lower part of the screen containing two bars and the letters "COM" and "ACT."
The top bar places a marker for each enemy monster, whereas the bottom one
sets a marker for your party characters, and this gauge indicates when every
participant in the fight has his turn. These markers, as the battle con-
tinues, gradually travel to the right; upon reaching COM, you are able to
input a command for one of your characters (or, the enemy selects a command).
Whatever action is chosen will not be executed until that character's marker
lands on the gauge's far right end. Different commands may require more time
than others, so fight with care!

----------------------
Encountering The Enemy
----------------------
The way that you encounter the enemy party (or they bump into you) on the
field screen makes a HUGE difference of who has the upperhand at the battle's
outset. There are three methods to meet with foes:

Head On: Both parties clash face-to-face. No one has an advantage in this
case, and everyone essentially begins on even ground.

Sneak Attack: Ryudo's crew encounters the monsters from their rear. Here,
your party surrounds the enemy and can execute actions before
              the opponent can.

Ambushed: The enemy force ambushes your group from your behind, surrounds
them, and attacks before you have the chance.

---------------
Combat Commands
---------------
All right, so you're standing toe-to-toe with some badass demons, now what?
A character can select a command when his marker reaches COM on the IP Gauge,
so let's have a look at what he can do...

Combo: Performs a two-hit combo with currently equipped weapon. Rare access-
ories can be equipped to add extra combo attacks (very useful!).

Critical: Attacks with a piercing blow that knocks back an enemy's marker to
the left. Although you can probably get away without ever using
this command, it definitely makes life easier, as you can delay a
monster from performing an incredibly powerful attack. Perhaps if
you plan it right, you can slay the enemy party without ever being
          damaged!

Moves/Magic: Uses a character's move or magic spell. Self-explanatory.

Items: Uses one item from the party's stash.

Defend: Protects a character by reducing inflicted damage.

Escape: Run away! Run away!

----------------
Status Disorders
----------------
Sometimes an enemy is able to inflict a status effect to one or more of your
party members, so here's a list of what they are!

Poison: Gradually drains HP. Continues after the end of battle.

Sleep: Halts a character's ability to act.

Plague: Random affects a character with other disorders. Continues after
        battle.

Confusion: Character randomly attacks anyone, friend or foe.

Paralysis: Halts a character's ability to act.

Magic Block: Disables the use of magic spells.

Move Block: Disables the use of moves.

Fallen: Character is out of commission (HP reaches 0) until revived.

--------
Overview
--------
In the world of Grandia II, characters acquire power and abilities through
four different areas: levels, moves, skill books, and Mana Eggs. The usual
experience points enable your party to level-up, but the other areas require
either Special Coins (SC) or Magic Coins (MC), which are then spent like money
to gain these new skills. To maintain a well-balanced band of warriors, it is
recommended that you work on gradually building all four areas.

  Deciding on how to distribute your hard-earned coins is a challenge;
however, there is one thing you should keep in mind. Spend coins on abilities
you WILL actually use and find helpful! Many a time I kicked myself for
wasting my coins on some worthless skill I knew I wouldn't ever make use of...

--------------------
Character Parameters
--------------------
Sure, you might already know what a character's stats mean, but here are
descriptions just so you know!

STR (Strength): Character's attack strength.
VIT (Vitality): Character's defensive strength.
AGI (Agility): How quickly a character's IP Gauge progresses.
SPD (Speed): How quickly and how far a character can move in battle.
MAG (Magic): Character's magic attack strength.
MEN (Mentality): Character's magic defense strength.

ATK (Attack Value): Determines amount of physical damage inflicted on enemies.
Based on STR, equipped items, and skills.
DEF (Defense Value): Determines amount of physical damage absorbed. Based on
                     VIT, equipped items, and skills.
ACT (Action Value): Determines how fast IP Gauge advances. Based on AGI,
                    equipped items, and skills.
MOV (Movement Value): Determines movement speed and distance in combat. Based
on SPD, equipped items, and skills.

------
Levels
------
If you have played other RPGs, the leveling system is no foreign concept to
you. Winning battles allows your characters to walk away with experience
points, among other goodies. When a party member acquires a certain amount of
these points, he levels up and becomes a little bit stronger than before.

-----
Moves
-----
Each of Grandia II's characters comes with a set of unique abilities, simply
called moves. Moves are an invaluable weapon in battle, as they can heal,
decimate enemy fighters, or boost the party's power. However, unlike magic
spells, these skills deplete SP, and as SP gradually regenerates, you fre-
quently have the opportunity to use moves in battle. Use them often, but use
them well!

As mentioned earlier, increasing a move's level requires Special Coins that
can be collected after battle like experience points. A move has a total of
five levels, as indicated by the number of stars beside it, and each level
means the ability can be executed more quickly and with more power.

-----------
Skill Books
-----------
Finding skill books is a rarity in Grandia II, but their benefits are
incredible! Every book contains six skills, such as increasing maximum HP or
empowering fire spells, which can be leveled up in the same way as you would
with a character's moves. A party member can equip only a few skills, so
choose wisely! Should you cover up a character's weaknesses, or should you
further boost an already powerful strength?

---------
Mana Eggs
---------
Similarly to skill books, Mana Eggs are only found once in a blue moon.
These magical items enable a character to equip spells and cast them in a
fight (at the cost of some MP, of course!), and like everything else, spells
can be leveled up with coins. A higher level means the spell is casted faster.
Needless to say, that is VERY crucial against powerful foes!

Ryudo makes his living as a Geohound, bouncing from job to job, completing
them regardless of moral judgement. Ever since he was a child, he has taken
his training seriously and now even his colleagues recognize his superior
skills with the sword. Characterized as being cynical and pessimistic, Ryudo
pushes forward, intent on getting the job at hand done. Ryudo loves to pick
on his traveling companion Skye. Although they sound harsh to one another at
times, Skye is perhaps the only one who truly understands Ryudo.

child, Elena hopes to banish Darkness from the hearts of everyone, so that she
may restore the light.

mountains, silently, ever intent on his prey. He bases his actions not on
theory or logic, but on the natural flow of life. While physically intim-
idating, Mareg is actually quite kind-hearted and gentle.

An automaton produced during the Battle of Good and Evil, Tio looks human,
but does not possess emotion or feelings--and can do nothing but carry out the
orders she has been given. When treated as a human, Tio often becomes
confused and seeks direction from others.

Upon selecting "New Game" from the title screen, you are treated with an
animated opening movie displaying a quick overview of the conflict between
Lord Granas and Valmar. Don't worry, you will learn much more about it later!

Ryudo, along with his feathered friend Skye, rob a group of monsters for
treasure, and our spiky-haired hero is promptly dropped down into the forest
to receive the reward for his efforts. This is Ryudo's life. Hopping from
job to job in hopes of getting by.

Noticing another job offer, Ryudo decides to take up the request made by the
Church of Granas. And this is where you finally gain control! Follow the
arrow on the compass to a save point positioned next to a nearby ladder.
Save, if you so desire, and press A to clamber up.

Dash south to spot a chest containing a Blizzard Charm accessory. Descend
the next ladder, continue along the forest path, and engage the Mottled Spider
walking around. Slay it to discover another chest; this holds a Wound Salve,
Hand Grenade, and Yomi's Elixir! But, watch out, as a second spider jumps
out! Proceed to Carbo Village.

Soon after entering the town, Ryudo learns that Elena and the other women
are heading off to a tower to do some exorcism. Spooky! You can explore the
village a bit now if you want (the general store offers combat tips); when you
are ready walk south to the church.

The defensive Elena doesn't take too kindly to Ryudo's interruption, and
Carius tells the Geohound to meet him at the inn for further details. While
there, the priest explains the situation to Ryudo. A ceremony is to be held
at the Garmia Tower, and Elena needs to be escorted and protected throughout
this whole ordeal, as she has a very important "role." Return to the church's
entrance to pick up her highness. Exit the village, and enter The Black
Forest on the world map.

Or, as Steve Rhyner would say, the dark, black forest.

Remember, even though Elena is with Ryudo, she does not participate in any
battles! Follow the compass north to a dead end holding a Medicinal Herb.
Proceed on through the forest; Ryudo and Elena engage in a short conversation
which results in a battle with two Dodos. Easy battle. Slightly further
ahead lies the next section of the area...

Two more Dodos await Ryudo and Elena in the open area near the start! If
you take notice, there are separate paths you can choose after the fight: the
left has a bag of 50G, while the other holds a Myriad Power Nut. Either way,
you reach the exit to the world map. Now, onto Garmia Tower!

Ooh, look! Generic spooky music that foreshadows important events!

Approach the group of women so Elena can begin this oh-so-crucial ceremony
inside the tower, and sometime after Ryudo builds a campfire, screams and
flashes of light emit from the building (it's like a rave, man!). Barge
through the doors!

This is your first true taste of Grandia II's Diablo-esque dungeons! A save
point lies near the entrance, so record your progress for now. Keep in mind
you can use it to fully recover your health (kinda cheap, don't ya think?).

Pass under the arch by the save point, and head east, eliminating any
spiders you may encounter. A Wound Salve can be found in an open area near
some broken stone pillars, and you can grab a Wind Charm by continuing on and
opening a treasure chest stashed in a small library. Backtrack to the tower's
entrance.

Now, this time, travel west after you walk under that arch to discover a
Hand Grenade (simiarly to where you acquired the Wound Salve). The staircase
leading to the second floor is guarded by a Mottled Spider (it's waiting on
a table, so watch out!).

After finishing the last "challenging" floor, walk through the western door
and into a massive room containing assorted damaged statues and a Gargoyle.
Proceed past the southeastern arch. If you decide to follow this "ring," it
takes you to the next set of stairs and another save point; however, explore
a little more to grab the items listed above.

Ambush! Two Gargoyles take Ryudo by surprise, and thus, puts you into a
semi-difficult battle. Take advantage of his Tenseiken Slash technique to
quickly put an end to the stone monsters.

Crippled on the floor, Tessa informs Ryudo that the ceremony has failed and
Elena must be saved. Attempt to open the locked golden doors, and then Skye
points out a convienently placed stained glass window you can shatter and
jump through. Elena is possessed by some demonic force (as indicated by those
nasty-looking wings), and while stunned, Ryudo manages to escape with the
girl.

Outside of Carbo Village, our two heroes discuss the problem at hand in a
cut scene, so pay a visit to the priest once they are done rambling. Father
Carius, being annoyingly ambiguous, explains to Ryudo the "Day of Darkness,"
when the devil Valmar is to be reborn, is steadily approaching, and Elena has
become infected with Valmar's Wings. But, before their talk reaches an end,
a noise is heard from outside...

The flirtatious vixen Millenia makes her first appearance by creating havoc
around Carbo Village, including striking the church tower with lightning.
Although she challenges Ryudo to battle, there is no way to win. Just give
up! The fight is over once Millenia stuns Ryudo with her magic.

Elena joins Ryudo on her quest to visit the Pope at his cathedral. Now you
can actually fight with Elena! Purchase any supplies you might need (sell
your Golden Statue!), exit the town, and enter the Inor Mountains on the world
map.

Woah, giant mushrooms! Where's Mario when you need him?

Throughout this area, items (or sometimes even enemies!) may be hidden
inside a mushroom, so destroy as many as you can! Take out the two 'shrooms
near the entrance, and follow the dirt path until you come across a save
point. Now, at this point in time, you can progress further into the moun-
tains by traveling the dirt path a little more, or you can explore the
forested surroundings for extra items and experience...

Crazy Dodos divebomb at Ryudo and Elena in the rocky sector, so watch out!
This is the only way to engage them in battle, unfortunately. Proceed up the
mountain to Inor Mountains II.

Shortly after entering this area, Ryudo decides it's time for them to set up
camp and rest for the night (seeing as how they must have traveled for fifty
miles, right?). Ryudo, coaxing Elena to reveal more about this so-called
ceremony," fails miserably, and Elena refuses to sleep inside the same tent
as Ryudo after considering possible scenarios such as, "Don't touch me there,
Ryudo!" Anyhow, moving right along...

Head east into the lower trail for a bag of 50G. Once you are done there,
take the high road, and witness an exciting scene showcasing a bunch of
boulders falling down! Ascend the rope ladder, proceed on the mountain path,
and stop when you spot two wooden see-saws, each holding a rock. Releasing
one boulder causes it to plow through the stones surrounding a treasure chest,
and the other enables Ryudo and Elena to reach a Climbing Hat.

Defeat the nearby Mottled Spiders, and descend the rope ladder. As you are
walking down this mountain path, flip open the dark treasure chest for a
Crystal Brooch, Poison Antidote, and Yomi's Elixir. The rest of Inor Moun-
tains is straightforward; follow the trail down using your compass.

Man, what a desolate "town," eh?

Chat with the armored guard outside the wooden barricades to learn that a
group of monsters from a nearby cave attacked the town, and as if you couldn't
already guess, it's your job to set things right! Visit Vyx at the inn, and
select the option to greet him. After Ryudo and Vyx catch up, an argument
erupts between a blonde boy named Roan and a motley crew of mercenaries over a
valuable medal. Elena suggests they help the boy find his jewelry, but, as
always, Ryudo adamantly refuses to do so.

Interrupting a seemingly peaceful scene, Millenia pops out of the blue and
takes Ryudo by surprise (and stuns him in the process!). Head back into the
main inn room after gaining control. Millenia and Ryudo decide to help out
Roan from becoming a meal for the monsters, so exit the inn, continue past the
guard you met earlier, and search the rock wall for the cave entrance.

                                                                      Poff Nut
                                                                   Sleep Charm
                                                                 Yomi's Elixir

Proceed on the rocky path, and Ryudo gazes around the dead sexy cave for a
better look. Now, of course, a cluster of stalactites plummet to the ground
and conveniently place a staircase before your feet! Recover and save at the
cone, if necessary. Pass under the arch...

Ryudo and Millenia spot a Carro emerging from several wooden crates. Ain't
he a cute lil' fella? Collect the nearby Firebomb, dash by the two torches,
and then jump off the low ledge. If common sense doesn't tell you anything,
have Ryudo push the mammoth boulders to pulverize the cavern wall, sending two
Crag Snakes your way! Eradicate the buggers, enter the next room, and acti-
vate the switch in the very center (there is a Medicinal Herb nearby!). This
directs the water, changing which of the two bridges you can access. For the
moment, cross the platform that you just raised. Collect another herb if you
so desire, walk underneath the rock archway, grab Yomi's Elixir (it's hidden
by the storage crates), and shove that flat stone over the edge. Remember the
switch? Backtrack, and hit it again!

This time, however, proceed into the room near the wooden bridge. Trapping
the dynamic duo, you are forced to deal with FOUR Crag Snakes! Blech!
Millenia's Fallen Wings ability should be enough to kill them all at once.
Keep pressing forth until you are ensared in another trap; however, you gotta
battle Frost Frogs this time around! Once they are gone, leave through the
southern exit to discover a Sleep Charm and Poff Nut. You can give the nut to
the Carro you spotted earlier, although it seems the only result is Ryudo
making a comment on how happy the rodent looks. Anyhow, follow the compass to
reach the second sector of Durham Cave!

Ruh-roh! Roan is about to be torn to teeny, tiny pieces! The party engages
the three Troglodytes in battle. As with the Frost Frogs, use Millenia's
Fallen Wings to help soften the walking fishies. You receive the Mist Egg as
part of your victory spoils.

Millenia decides to take Roan along (after having your face shoved into her
chest, wouldn't YOU want to go?), though Ryudo believes otherwise. Stroll
past the underground lake and into yet another ambush! The sparkly chest
contains a Calming Harp for the taking. Outside this room lies a group of
Frost Frogs guarding a Medicinal Herb. Close by is a metal crate and two
switches. Step on the switch (that is NOT in the path of the box!) to lift
the nearby gate, and go inside to nab 300G. Ram the crate over the other
switch, enabling Ryudo and crew access to an alcove with a lever that part-
ially drains the lake. The adjacent room holds a Stone Head helmet (go get
it!).

Before crossing the newly formed land bridge, pick up the pouch with 100G.
A second Poff Nut resides on the other side, and s'more Troglodytes await the
party after hopping off the ledge. Swing the lever to bring the wooden bridge
up to the top, and be sure to push the boulder and record your progress at
this time! Have Roan equipped with the Mist Egg before moving on.

BOSS: Durham Minotaur, Troglodyte (x2) HP: 4200, 980

  HULK SMASH!!

The twin Troglodytes should be your first priority, so Millenia's Fallen
Wings ought to shake things up! If they happen to survive, use Ryudo and
Roan's normal Combo attacks to finish them off. Because they never regen-
erate, slaying them definitely helps make the fight easier on you!

The muscle-bound bull's Tornado Horn proves to be a pain, as it has a chance
to confuse a character, and it's doubtful you have any move, spell, or item
that can cure confusion at this point in the game. Execute Critical attacks
to delay the Durham Minotaur from unleashing his horn ability.

For this fight, Ryudo should stick to using normal attacks and any of his
Tenseieken abilities (when he can use them), and Millenia's offensive spells,
especially Zap!, prove useful to inflicting massive pain. Roan is best suited
to healing and casting support spells (Diggin', etc.).

Hooray! Your very first skill book!

Showing off her expertise, Millenia barbecues the minotaur (and why didn't
she just do that to begin with?), and Roans robs the corpse of his precious
medal. With all of that jazz done, head back to Agear Town (yes, you MUST go
back through the entire cave again!).

psychedelic save cone. As you proceed north, analyze the wall for a tiny
green light. Steam flows out of that crevice, damaging any character in the
party that happens to run into it! Obviously, retreat and recover to the cone
if you absolutely need to.

After defeating the Giant Mantis party, examine the bush to acquire a Seed
of Running, and then continue up the plateau to fight a few more foes. Feel
free to explore this area (watch out for enemies!), as you can pick up gold
a pair of Dash Shoes, and a Seed of Psyche. When you be ready, go after the
compass's direction.

Holy mole people, Batman! A mess of burrowing animals, called Sandmen, are
scattered throughout this sector of Baked Plains; however, attacking with a
multi-target spell such as Zap! definitely speeds up the battle. Not only
does it damage them, but there is also a chance of inflicting paralysis!

Near the entrance resides a petite lake holding up a special chest. Simply
slice 'n dice the rock barrier, and open the box to grab a Healing Herb, North
Wind Cape, and Poison Charm. Keep an eye out for those steam vents as you
stroll around the neighborhood!

There is really not much else to say here. Collect anything you stumble
upon, and follow where the compass points when you think you are ready.

select one of the three and listen to him/her ramble. Elena explains an

BOSS: Beast-Man (4800 HP)

Considering this wild beast lobs off about 150 HP per hit, this fight will
not be particularly easy! Beast-Man sticks to attacking with either Combo
techniques or Beast-Fang Cut, a powerful physical attack. If you couldn't
guess from his earlier remarks, he focuses much of his assaults upon Ryudo.

Cast Diggin' on your party at least twice to boost their defensive power.
Elena should utilize offensive spells, and Ryudo with special moves. Keep
Ryudo in tip-top shape with Heal and items!

After nearly trying to kill Ryudo, the barbarian known as Mareg informs
Ryudo that a man named Melfice destroyed his home village, and he plans to

The rest of Baked Plains is pretty straightforward, seeing as how you have

Liligue City, it wouldn't be a bad idea to go through the Baked Plains a few
times to gain experience points and coins!

Ryudo and co. encounter a woman and man "discussing" how the city is plagued
with Darkness, and the trio discovers that the Skyway is shut down until the
next day. Ah, convenience!

Purchase new weapons and threads down at the general store, and then tell
the overly excited innkeeper to spend the night. After tasting the "del-
icacy," Ryudo suggests visiting Gadan in the morning.

On this fine, sunny day, continue south of the inn to stir up a dialogue
with a starving young boy, which leads the party inside the engineer's house.
Elena, being the inquisitive person that she is, learns from this family that
all of Liligue City's inhabitants have suddenly lost their ability to taste
food! What's next? A paper shortage?

You can locate Gadan's house by proceeding south of where you just left.
The insanely obese man demands 10,000G in order to ride the Skyway, so need-
less to say, we will need to find some alternate solution! Take Gadan's
suggestion, and shove off to the city's church high on top of the hill (switch
your compass's destination to Church if you can't find it).

Father recommends Elena and her companions to walk up stairs to discover the
"truth," which is Liligue City was built upon the ruins of a derelict Granas
temple. Ryudo's intuition tells him perhaps another random appenade of Valmar
is cooped up somewhere amongst the ruins underground...

However, before team can head into the abyss, Mareg is waiting outside,
attempting to find the source of the evil scent. Naturally, he joins the
party! You can enter the ruins, once you ARE ready, by opening the steel
doors positioned by Gadan's house (on the ground).

If you just so happen to be afraid of the dark, examining the torches
attached on the wall causes them to light up. Taking the side path near the
entrance sends you to a 400G pouch. The dirt tunnel splits a second time by
Crag Snake/Giant Mantis party; follow the route the compass points to (north)
to land a Healing Herb! Unfortunately, the gaping hole in the ground prevents
you from progressing here, so return to the fork and go the other way.

Woohoo! Another fork! Head southeast to pick up a Mogay Bomb, but select
the northeastern passage to delve further into the cave. And, like the other
splits, this next one has one route that leads to an item (dash northeast for
a Purifying Herb), while the other is one you want to travel...

Now, at the NEXT fork, choose the north trail (the other's a deadend). The
following junction, which is the last one, directs Ryudo and crew to a 1200G
chest (northwest) and the exit to Liligue Cave II (southwest).

Once again, an enemy party is there to greet you at the entrance! Run in a
northeastern direction, snatch the gold bag from the dirt trench, and continue
along the stone walkway until Ryudo and the gang stumble upon an outlandish
monument. Step down on the switch, and read over the stone column. It tells
you to light the appropriately colored candlesticks, so that's what we gotta
do! If you backtrack slightly, you discover that two passages have opened up
on each side of the wall. First, proceed into the archway on the north wall!

This room is ridiculously simple. Trash the enemies, steal the Bonds of
Trust and Confusion Charm from the chests, and raise the green orb. Easy, no?
Instead of leaving the way you came in, select the other path off to the side,
leading you to a previously unopened sector.

Cross the tiny chasm, and flip open the dark chest for a Fire Pendant, Flam-
berge, and a Holy Wound Salve. Woohoo! The upcoming room contains a puzzle!
Did I scare you? Don't worry, it's easy to solve! Shove that mahogany box on
the eastern side to position it back into place. Climb the nearby staircase
(a Ghoul is hiding within the crate at the top!), and activate the magic red
ball to raise a second pedestal. Now, you probably noticed an item stashed in
between the boxes and wall...if you REALLY want a Poff Nut, exit the room, and
ram that box from the northern side. Anyway, once you are ready, backtrack to
the chamber with the monument, and embark into that other gap in the wall
mentioned earlier.

The final objective, the blue light, resides here. Scale the stairs, engage
the Giant Mantis group in battle, and take a closer look at the azure orb.
Retreat to the Happy Fun Magic Ball Pillars. Touching the yellow ball causes
the wall to shift, creating an entryway to the area's third sector.

BOSS: Valmar's Tongue (8000 HP), Head (5000 HP), Left Hand (4000 HP),
      Right Hand (4000 HP)

Yikes! You have FOUR targets to deal with here! Although you very well
could concentrate on dismantling the head and hands, your time would be better
spent on pummeling Valmar's Tongue. It does have the most HP, but the battle
ends as soon as its health is depleted!

Start off the fight by casting support spells a few times (particularly
Diggin') to give Ryudo and company a slight edge. Much of this boss's attacks
are fire-based, including Flamethrower, Burn!, and Burnflame, and they WILL
put a dent in your characters' HP if you do not pay attention! Diggin' should
give some assistance in reducing the damage.

Fire everything you got at Valmar's Tongue! Equip Millenia with a Mana Egg
(pick the Item command), and have her cast any offensive spells. Burnstrike
proves to be very effective! Ryudo, Roan, and Mareg should rely on moves
until their SP supplies run out.

After making a couple bad puns, Millenia absorbs power from the beast and
reveals a pudgy Gadan lying on the floor. Elena, now back at Gadan's house,
explains Valmar can advantage of a person's weaknesses and devour their soul,
and, trust me, you will be seeking a lot of devoured souls later!

Adjust your compass to the Skyway Station, and hitch a ride! And, as if
you didn't see this one comin', darkness enshrouds the scene, sending the
airbone vehicle straight into the ground...

Ryudo, Roan, and Mareg rise up from the wreck (without a scratch, I might
add!) and take notice that Elena seems to missing from their party. While
they are out and about, Elena and Millenia have their first encounter.

Head southwest once the group has been reunited. See that squishy snow
pile? Your movement speed slows down as you walk through it, making the party
very vulnerable to being thrown into battle! To gain a Lumir Flower, trudge
the thin pile inbetween the trees, and continue following the path until you
come across the chest. While it may not be much, that is the only item so far
that can restore MP! You can collect 400G by nabbing the purse situated near
the exit to Lumir Forest.

A save cone can be found near the entrance; just watch out for the mammoth
blob of snow that falls down! Navigating through this mess can become a tad
tricky, considering all of these pine trees hinder your view. Shortly after
the save cone is a Big Foot on patrol. Much of the enemies in this area are
vulnerable to fire-based attacks, so use that to your advantage! Once the
party is defeated, search the nearby firs for a side path leading to a 1200G
chest.

Another chest, this one holding an Insecticide Bomb, is stashed further
ahead of the previous one (another Big Foot walks around here). Follow the
compass to uncover a cave entrance.

Roots! Everywhere! Order Ryudo to slice 'n dice the bundle of roots in
your path. You will find a lot more of these! At the split, walk the north-
eastern route to find, yet again, a 1200G chest. Chase after the compass's
direction until Ryudo and co. come across an open room.

Two Giant Crab parties protect a purse of 400G in the middle. Now, at this
point in time, there is a sidepath you may take. Remember where you first
entered this room? Do a U-turn, and chop the roots in the way. Hug the wall
to discover another Lumir Flower. In a chamber not far from here, more crabs
guard another gold pouch (400G). Follow the compass to exit the cave.

Thar be more Yeti in these here parts! Examine the forest wall to locate
yet another 400G bag (how many of these are there?). Walk a little farther,
and you can spot an enormous tree leading to the second cave area. However,
before entering the abyss, a 1200G chest resides in a sidepath.

each piece opens up another passage. Walk through the northern opening to
acquire the Oracle's Staff for Elena. The western passage only has a Huge
Caterpillar for the party to battle and has no items, unfortunately. Head
into the southern path to delve deeper into the cavern.

At the fork, dash west for your 500th bag of 400G. Go to where the compass
points to find a more open arena with more bugs. Collect the Insecticide Bomb
when the caterpillars are out of commission, and then follow your trusty
compass. Ignore the roots at the split; they just lead to a deadend. Shortly
after that, examine the wall to locate a patch of roots that stand out from
the rest of the tree wall. Hack them to pieces, and rob the chest inside of
its 1200G. Proceed to enter the forest once more!

the triangular trees, and finally nab a 400G bag in another sidepath. Behind
the colossal blueish boulder is a chest holding an Arctic Cape, Ice Pick, and

Once again, Elena makes a comment on the village's sad appearance, meaning
you will be forced to go on another journey to save twenty people from
becoming clinically depressed for the rest of their lives... The villagers
seem to believe Elena has arrived to help the town, as they expected to see
someone from the Church.

The village chief explains the outlandish situation to the party. People
have been falling asleep and having frightening dreams of an evil presence
within the town. Spooky.

Barge into the inn, and Irina mentions her son is not waking up. After
everyone files into his room, the woman tells the crew the Garden of Dreams is
a mere fairy tale and nothing more. Irina believes the girl Ryudo encountered
in the garden is the source of this curse, despite the fact she really has no
proof of it.

Cross the spike-covered bridge southeast of the inn, and the party discovers
the little girl from the Garden of Dreams. Sandra, Aira's mother, orders the
group to come inside for further discussion. Once the short talk is over,
Aira takes notice of some people outside...

The Cathedral Knights, lead by High Priestess Selene, are stationed near the
town entrance and plan to "purify" Mirumu of Darkness. And by "purify," I
mean "kill or burn anything that appears remotely suspicious." Needless to
say, no one is going anywhere... With that in mind, spend the night at the
inn.

Ryudo, during his stay, falls into a truly bizarre dream sequence that
revives memories of his past. Look out the window, and a flying eyeball takes
the Geohound by surprise! The party believes the nightmares plaguing Mirumu
are coming from that creature, so check on Irina in the manager's room. She
has already fallen to the curse, but Skye attempts to follow the eye. Exit
the inn. The remaining critters fly off to the cave near Sandra's house.
And, naturally, that is your next destination!

BOSS: Eyeball Bat (x4) (3000 HP)

Overall, these guys do not pose much of a threat, but because each one comes
equipped with 3,000 HP, it may take some time to eliminate the entire crew.
The bats' normal attacks deal around 100 HP damage, whereas their Delta Burst

to slow down the execution time (or stop it from ever being used).

As Ryudo suggests, these giant eyes aren't the "real" enemy, just a mere
distraction to delay them. A villager, barging into the scene, orders the
group to enter the town hall so Selene can conduct an investigation. She
informs you she will search and locate the evil one behind this whole problem,
but Ryudo believes in returning to the fissure to find the culprit.

But, before you can revisit the fissure, Aira approaches the party and then
promptly runs into the shed behind her house. Drop down the hole in the shed,
returning you exactly where you left off earlier. Aira drags everyone into
the garden a second time, revealing her "evil" eye that has been causing this
curse. Backtrack to the village through Lumir Forest.

As if you couldn't possibly guess, Selene grills Sandra regarding her
dealings with Valmar and discovers the darkness within Aira's eye. However,
before she can do anything, Aira mysteriously vanishes after being held by
Elena...

Go to the garden via Lumir Forest, and allow Millenia to create a portal
leading to the fissure. Inside, pass through the dark purplish opening to
enter Aira's...SOUL!! Like the Valmar vixen says, once you go through, you
can't leave until this scenario is complete!

Apparently Aira's soul must smoke quite a bit... Near the drop zone, there
is a Silver Feather lying on the ground. You can also find a Star Mirage
further ahead. Remember, although you cannot leave this area, you can always
return to the save cone to recover any damage! Continue ahead around the
bend, and collect the 500G bag and Yomi's Elixir. Soon after this, the party
comes across a stone bridge that splits, so take the path leading south to
collect a pair of Red Shoes. Then travel the other route. Here, nab the 500G
pouch stashes behind a group of pillars, and proceed south to uncover a
mysterious bell. Ring it to summon a whale.

Quite a contrast in environment, eh? Engage the Twin Ogre/Hammerhead gangs,
and rob the chest of its 1500G. Hop into the bubble contraption to enter the

Needless to say, this area is very "unique." Fight the Hellhounds and Huge
Caterpillars if you so desire, and cross the flesh bridge next. The black box
situated near the dead trees contains Bonds of Trust, Illusion Clothes, and a
Mirage Earring. Walk northwest of the chest, activate the bridge, and grab
the Battle Manicure on the other side. Continue waltzing along the boundary
to discover yet another eyeball-infested overpass.

Take out the Hellhound parties, and go over the stone crossing into the
next awkwardly slanted section. Pick up the Moebius Ring beside the fence.
Once you have taken the money from the treasure chest, head on over the make-
shift tree bridge, and ascend the ladder (why does it take so long for every-
one to climb?!). Collect the funds from the fence, and enter the enclosed
space. AMBUSH! As pillars rise from the ground, Hellhounds drop from the
sky! Recover, and record at the cone before approaching the eye. Your party
should be around Lv25 at this point.

BOSS: Valmar's Eye (12000 HP), Left/Right Tendril (6000 HP),
      Eyeball Bat (x4) (3000 HP)

As always, casting support spells is a helpful tactic in prepping the group
for a tough fight! You have already tackled Eyeball Bats before, and you
ought to know by now their Delta Burst technique isn't exactly weak. It would
be a good strategy to eliminate them first and get them out of the way.
Attacking with multi-target spells/moves makes it easier and faster to remove
them from the battlefield.

As for the eye and its tendrils, they tend to focus on using attacks that
can inflict status effects, including poison, confusion, and sleep. Roan's
Vitality March move is absolutely awesome here, as it removes all negative
status disorders from everyone in the party! If you previously used attacks
such as Fallen Wings or Zap All, you might as well finish off the tendrils in
addition to the eye. Just use Alhealer and Vitality March to keep the party's
health in check.

east (rather than you where came in), and there you shall uncover a giant
treasure chest holding a Lion Field Garb. Backtrack to the waterfall, and

Out of sheer boredom, Ryudo determines the party should camp AGAIN. (Yep,
a second overblown dialogue sequence!) Continue scaling the mountain, unless
Ryudo thinks the party needs to rest... Above the tiny waterfall, shove the
boulder into the hole, preventing water from plummeting into the pond. Now
you can pick up the Dragonslayer Axe!

Continue truckin' up St. Heim into the waterfall, and then pop back out onto
the mountainside. Here, more stashes of gold and a Seed of Spells are thrown
about the area, along with several enemies. While there is a seemingly out-
of-place white door, ignore it for now, and continue on to the Cathedral!

And thus, you are finally here! After meeting with the gate guard, Elena
determines it would be better to wait until tomorrow before meeting Zera, so
here's your chance to explore the wonders of Lords Granas. Crash at St.
Heim's store, and equip the team with better goods since you probably have
quite a bit of money by now.

Tell the inn keeper you want to the spend the night to start up another
rousing dialogue among the party members. Interrupting the discussion, a
priest orders Elena to visit the Cathedral at once...

Sporting an flashy outfit reminiscent of Earth, Wind & Fire, the Pope sug-
gests that Valmar is trying to revive himself, and it is hope to Elena to stop
it. However, the Granasaber must be found, first.

And, barging in once more, the priest wants the remaining members to talk to
the Pope, so exit the inn, and travel up to the Granas Cathedral. Ain't it a
purdy lil' building? Upon talking to the gate guard, have Ryudo enter the
Audience Chamber while Mareg and Roan dive into some books in the library.

Listen! For the Pope speaks! Zera attempts to deal with his restless foll-
owers with inspirational words and then commands them to continue about their
business. Follow Zera to his room. The Pope desires Ryudo to search for the
Divine Sword/Granasaber/Big Pointy Stick in order to prevent the Day of Dark-
ness, Valmar's revival, from ever happening. Naturally, Zera has absolutely
no clue where the hell the sword is, leaving Ryudo confused.

With that conversation out of the way, head up to the library and chat with
Mareg and Roan. If you are really bored, take a look at the books, but you
should rest at the guestroom when you be done.

The game then cuts to a scene involving Cardinal Oro being ambushed by the
Wings of Valmar, Millenia. A guard, rather calmly I might add, informs Ryudo
and company that Valmar is in the building! Run to the balcony at this point.
After Miss Millenia makes her speech, backtrack to the Audience Chamber, so
Ryudo can accept searching for the Granasaber. And as a nice bonus, Zera
gives the party the Book of Priests!

Although Ryduo is clueless as to where to begin, Roan believes traveling to
his homeland, the Kingdom of Cyrum, would be their best lead. Head off to the

As the people standing along the road tell Ryudo, monsters are roaming near
this road. If you truly do not feel like fighting, simply follow the compass
to the world map, but of course you don't *really* want to do that, do you?
Clamber down the ladder, engage the enemies, and do some treasure hunting!
Here's what ya can collect...

Western Half: 500G (x2), 1500G, Holy Wound Salve, Seed of Moves

Eastern Half: Bravery Bandana, Magic Blessing, Poff Nut, Poisoned Knife

When you are finished, continue to Raul Hills.

Shortly along the dirt footpath resides a rainbow save cone. Dash slightly
east of this position to uncover a treasure chest, containing a Thunder Ring,
beside a wooden fence, and then proceed southeast. Here you can find a Buster
Flail stashed underneath a tree. While there is a stone bridge leading you
into the next part of Raul Hills I, pass it, hug the river, and rob the chest
of its 1500G.

Across the bridge lies a stone maze filled with Dragonoids! Woohoo! Seeing
as how you have a partial bird's eye view, navigating the labrinyth is not
really that difficult. Inside, you can collect 500G, 1500G, BlackQuartz Helm,
and Earthern Cuirass. Once out of the maze, pick up the 500G by the riverbed,
and shove off to Raul Hills II.

The first thing you will probably notice here are the bizarre plants that
inflate as you approach them, and similarly to the mushrooms from earlier in
the game, they can be destroyed, sometimes leaving an item (or enemy) behind.
Follow the compass until you come across an area with a beach and save cone.
South of here is a dark chest perched on top of a rock formation. Chop the
tops off the stones, and open the box for a Quake Stone, Scroll of Alheal, and
Rage Ring.

Save and recover at the cone, pass over the bridge, and hitch a ride in the
wooden boat guarded by a party of Dragonoids. The destination drops the party
off near the exit to the world map.

You are finally here, although Roan puts a bit of a dark cloud over the
entire situation. As usual, crash at the general store to acquire better
equipment for the team, and then spend a night at the city's inn. The Inn
Master suggests the crew talk with people in town if they are searching for a
certain something, and he mentions a man named Hemble.

During the following morning, Mareg decides to leave the pseudo-couple alone
while they visit Hemble at the docks. Exit the inn, set the compass desti-
nation to Informant Tent, and speak with the sailor outside. Hemble suggests
Ryudo and himself arm wrestly before he decides to tell anything about the
Divine Sword, and the game goes into an explanation of how this works.
However, it does not really matter; for if you fail, Elena distracts Hemble,
allowing Ryudo to finish the game off. Naturally, Hemble knows absolutely
nothing about a Divine Sword...

After the couple sits down on a bench, have Ryudo approach the juicebar
and choose the "hidden" option. Millenia makes an appearance when our spiky-
haired hero returns, and she's ready for some action! Shortly after the
vixen takes pleasure in the dance and music, Mareg and Roan approach the new
couple and alert them of trouble erupting inside the castle. Take a short
ride inside the boat Roan points to.

Outside the castle, talk with the guards. They reveal that Roan is, in
fact, the prince of Cyrum and also open up the passage into the building.
Climb on down!

Travel west of the starting room to find another Carro, who has somehow made
its way into the remnants of the castle basement. Anyway, continue on. Pick
up the Move Blessing from the ground, save, and then shove one of the wooden
crates out of your path. Proceeding south of this position leads to a Light-
ning Tiara, while the eastern route leads to a room patrolled by a couple
enemy parties. Once they are disposed of, rob the chest of its 2100G, push
two more crates, and collect the Electrum Stone.

Descend the ladder up ahead, and activate the Big Pink Lever to roll out a
bridge. Cross it onto the other side. The eastern path leads to a Silver
Feather, while trekking west takes the party to a 700G pouch and another lever
that grants access to a bridge. That iron gate can't be opened with Ryudo's
bare hands, so you must find a way to break through!

Climb the rope ladder after moving over the new bridge. Continuing north
sends you to the room with the save cone you were in earlier (be sure to take
up the Magical Brace nearby!). Backtrack, and head down the corridor you just
passed a moment ago. Activate the lever found here.

Remember the gate? Head back to it, and advance through the few remaining
rooms. Give one of the stone walls a gentle push to uncover a secret way
into the castle.

Skip through the hallway into the Room of Demon-Sealing. This "Gate of
Darkness" is barricading something incredibly powerful, which may bring about
disaster or war if it is opened. As it turns out, Roan's medal also functions
as a key to this gate (hence why he freaked out about it earlier in the game).
The Blonde Prince suggests discussing the Gate with his father, so scurry into
his office via the Audience Chamber.

The King has already decided to open the Gate, even without Roan's medal.
At this point, Roan gives a short review of the so-called "People of Dark-
ness," but a forceful tremor ripples through the castle, alerting the party
to return downstairs.

With the Gate of Darkness completely in shambles, Mareg detects the smell
of Melfice inside! Go on in!

Who the hell thought of the color scheme for this place?

Recover/save at the cone, and proceed south. Near the panel of green pipes,
there is a bag containing an Icefang Stone nearby (watch for the Skull Snail),
and a 700G pouch resides directly north of that. Eliminate the Warp Warriors
around the corner, and then carefully maneuver around the steam machine to
acquire a Soul Eater knife.

A Paralysis Salve is stashed beside the Dragonoid/Skull Snail party. Nab
the second 700G pouch, dash down the stairs, and activate the blazing red
lever to open up another route. Just be sure to collect the 2100G out of the
treasure chest before you backtrack!

In this newly revealed area, collect the Mana Harp and Move Blessing after
defeating a Warp Warrior party, and travel down the staircase. The entrance
to Underground Plant II is up ahead.

Despite its maze-like appearance, this area is fairly linear, requiring you
to trek from pipe to pipe until you reach central area. From the entrance,
start across the pipe leading east to gain a Dynamite. Then continue amongst
the other pipelines until you encounter a chest containing a Revival Gem;
here, go east for 2100G before advancing.

The next point of interest is a 700G purse guarded by a party of Skull
Snails and Vein Brains, and the following platform holds a lovely save cone!
Once you are down the ramp, go after the conduit leading to the south to
uncover more Warp Warriors and chest with a Forbear Necklace. Backtrack,
and continue forward.

At the four-way junction, take the 700G bag, and then hit the switch to move
the gates. Next, pick up the Paralysis Salve, and travel west (keep an eye
out for the Vein Brains floating about!). Thar be another 2100G here! The
next four-way requires Ryudo to flip another lever to shift the pipes around
(and there's a third 700G sack on the next platform).

Engage the Skull Snail/Warp Warrior gang, and cross the one pipeline to
discover a Fine Broadsword (great name, eh?). Obviously, the other pipe is
where you should head to next.

Snatch the Flame Stone near the ensuing ramp, and the lower level holds a
Miracle Elixir around the corner. Next, hitch a ride inside the strange
metal platform...

Blech, more green... Fortunately, this part is rather short...

Anyhow, yet another 700G can be found near the very first enemy party.
Eliminate the foes surrounding the red column, and collect your 2100G from the
treasure chest placed in the corner. Snatch the Warp Shoes off the ground,
recover and save at the rainbow cone, and enter the gate to the control room.

You know the drill by now, so cast support spells to bring up the party's
offensive and defensive prowess! While most of this battle's attacks do not
inflict much damage, they often cancel and hinder your characters' actions
(usually to multiple party members).

What truly makes this fight against Valmar easy is using Millenia's special
move, Spellbinding Eye, which completely halts an enemy's actions and slowly
damages it. Hit Valmar's Claw with it, and take this opporunity to chop off
both of his arms. Doing so prevents it from ever healing!

Once you do that, you shouldn't have an ounce of trouble winning.

Because Elena seems to be new to cruising on ships, Bakala's 50/50 makes a
pitstop at Ceceile Reef until she recovers. Walk away from the starting point
to uncover huge pearl-like stones buried in the ground, but the team believes
they should ignore them for now, so continue on. Ryudo pitches a tent for the
night in an open area slightly ahead (MORE DIALOGUE!).

[ insert romantic cutscene with Ryudo and Elena here ]

In the morning, a clamor of several Crimson Claws rudely awakens the party
and immediately throws them into combat. Defeat the crabs, and shove off to
Ceceile Reef I.

As usual, you conveniently have a save cone placed by the entrance. Most of
this oceanic area is straightforward, just proceed along the path and engage
any enemy parties in your journey. Be sure to collect Mareg's Dragonfly
Slayer stashed on top of the stone arch!

When you head down a ramp, you can pick up a Gale Stone hidden off to the
side, and there also are two 1000G pouches ahead of that. In the area with
the Crimson Claw colonies, enemies may ambush you by popping out of the holes,
so watch out! A Healing Fruit can be acquired here, too. Proceed to the
second part of Ceceile Reef.

Again, near the beginning, a Crimson Claw attempts to sneak-attack the crew.
Jump across the stones onto a more open field with Flame Toads, and then nab
the 1000G bag before hopping over. Besides encountering a Scaly Warrior for
the first time, another chest of gold can be opened for you here.

While walking among the partially submerged rocks, take the time to pick up
the Coral Necklace and Lullaby Staff from the spiffy-looking treasure boxes,
then travel across the western path onto a small island with a Mermaid Harp
protected by two enemy groups.

Proceed to where the compass directs you, collect the Electrum Stone, and
rest and record at the save cone, for ahead lies a couple Super Sized-crabs!
Ruh-roh, Raggy!
