"I waited for this???"
Ok, you would think that a game that involves transforming robots and lots of missles and stuff would be cool right? Well, yeah. WRONG!! Here's why.
Graphics: Ok sure, looking at screen shots of the game, it looks amazing. And if you downloaded the intro off the net, you would have been blown away by the NICe anime movie. I admit that the characters look nice on still screen but when you start playing the game, there is massive slowdown. I don't understand!!!
Sound: Sound is alright. Most of it is just shooting noises and missles being fired. Your radar warning system is a bit annoying at times, especially when more than one enemy targets you. Music is so so. It's only cool when you get the special ''plug in'' to play the original Macross music.
Story: i think that the game has a good story ... too bad i don't understand japanese. in between missions, there is a long dialogue between pilots and it seems to be telling a story.
Control/Gameplay: Pretty crappy if you ask me. the first few robots that you get can hardly move. You try to turn around to track an enemy but your slow-ass robot can't. Half the time you have to tranform into robot mode, use the auto targeting to aim missles, fire missles, transform into jet mode and fly away. Boring. for some of the ground missions, you are supposed to be in robot mode most of the time. trust me, the damn robot can barely run; don't even ask it to turn. when you start getting better jets, controls are a bit better but by the time you get them, the game is practically over.
The game has an interesting ''plug-in'' option. This lets you ''customize'' your ship by adding special ability chips. Each one allows you either more missle slots, faster aiming, etc. Not that essential though.
Buy or rent: Neither.
Conclusion: I feel bad for the creators of Macross because their beautiful idea has been butchered. They should have just turned this game into a oldschool shooter like Gigawing or Mars Matrix or even something like ZOE for PS2. Even if you are a die-hard Macross fan, I still insist that you stay away!!
