BANG! Gunship Elite
Review by Phange
"Starlancer's evil cousin....."
I'm sure most avid Dreamcast fans know of a little game called StarLancer. What they DONT know is that there is, in fact, ANOTHER space shooter for Sega's Wunderbox. It came in a boastful CD package saying it had gameplay that was unbeatable. By Unbeatable they probably meant you cant beat the game, as there is an annoying glitch at the last level that stops you from flying into the ''big bad ship''. Other than this minor setback, the game does have a nice graphics engine and a pretty good gameplay engine to boot. However, due to limitations in where you can fly, its best to get either StarLancer or Star Wars: Starfighter.
GRAPHICS
Undeniably the game's strongest point is its Graphics. Even though it was programmed with Windows CE (Which almost ALWAYS means the game has average graphics) The game has outstanding visual effect.... even greater than StarLancer's. The lighting of your ship's weapons reflects off enemies! Its that impressive.
Graphics: 10/10
Gameplay
This is where the game starts to get ugly. While the gameplay essentially feels like StarWars Starfighter, it soon loses its lustre when you realize the main jest of every mission is to destroy all the enemies. Its quite dull. The first mission will have your ship going all over the place, but after that its all shoot-kill-shoot-kill.
Gameplay: 7/10
Sound
This game, due to some unknown reason, does not have music. Therefore it is my duty to tell you that the sound is non-existant. Finally, a game for people of the hearing-impaired. The only sound is the cool laser fire and people talking about your mission. The other sound you may hear is the sound of your Dreamcast loading.... as this game loads A LOT.
Sound: 3/10
Lasting Appeal:
This game has some to no lasting appeal. Why? Because once its over, its over. No multiplayer. Starlancer did it right because it included an online multiplayer. What were they thinking? ''Oh lets just get it out the door''. Well, actually its kinda fun to play again every once and a while.....
LA: 3/10
In the end the game is good, but not great. It is easy to tell that the makers of Bang wanted to get it out the door and make their profits. The game went wrong only in lasting appeal, which they could have easily remedied with a good multiplayer mode. Unfortunately they didnt, which means all you people out there are left with an unfinished project that could have been fantastic.
