Record of Lodoss War
Review by Pacer_31
"The best RPG on the Dreamcast,"
Record of Lodoss War is based on the Lodoss War anime, I couldn't tell you more because, quite frankly, I've never seen it. I had no trouble, however, following the story of the game. The game begins as a wise old wizard named Wart awakens a long dead warrior. you are this warrior and, with no memory of your previous life, must set out to stop the resurrection of the goddess of destruction. Gameplay takes place in real time using an isometric viewpoint and is very much Diablo-like, you swing your blade, drink potions, and cast spells all in the heat of battle.
Graphics- 710
The graphics are nothing spectacular, the Dreamcast is capable of more. The games backgrounds which, I assume, are pre-rendered look very nice but the character models lack detail as does various landscape objects like trees. The graphics are very functional and rarely get in the way of gameplay. My only major complaint is the slowdown, which comes with approximately twenty enemies on the screen, which is understandable, but can make timing your movements and attacks very challenging.
Sound- 810
The music is well written and usually fits the situation quite well, voice isn't used too often but when used it is well acted. Characters voices seem to fit with the characters particularly that of Wart. Most of the sound effects are done well but I found the loud footsteps quite irritating while playing the game.
Gameplay- 910
This game is pure fun. Hacking down monsters is always a joy, and the involving story line keeps you going. The equipment system is a big draw here, as it enables you to customize your fighting style to how you see fit. Equipment affects your character's visual representation as well, allowing you to give him his own personality with various colours of equipment. The quest for new equipment is never ending in this game, and the unquenchable need for mithril keeps you adventuring.
Lasting Appeal- 1010
This game is massive, my first run through took me just over 60 hours and I hadn't even come close to finishing all of the side quests. The game contains 30 medallions that can be collected and traded for items as well as the four pieces of Dragon equipment, suffice it to say, you won't be blowing through this in a weekend.
Overall- 910
Despite stalling out in the Audio and Video departments, this game keeps you along with it's gripping plot, fast paced combat, and addictive customization.
