Unreal Tournament
Review by Mike D.
"Say hello to Unreal Tournament, then say goodbye to civilization for a few days."
I love this game, there I said it. I rented this game back in June, and when I played it, it was the most fun I had with a game in a long time. Very very well done. I am just sad I rented it, and not bought it. I didn't realize just how great this game really was until I rented Quake 3: Arena a few weeks later. Quake is good, but it just lacked so much compared to Unreal. The only thing Quake has that Unreal doesn't is a custom configuration for the controller. Well with that said, onto the review!
Graphics 9/10
Why a 9? Well I noticed a few annoying break up on the walls and floor while running. Nothing annoying though. Lovely graphics. The power of the Dreamcast was well displayed.
Sound 10/10
This is an area where UT(Unreal Tournament) really shines. The characters actually talk, and that's a nice addition. Even better when you can type your own messages. As for the music, I love it. It's something I wouldn't mind listening to in my car.
Gameplay 10/10
All I can say is, NO SLOWDOWN. Even with 8 different characters on the screen, the action stays fast paced. Also the levels are just great. Some are just HUGE, with some interaction, like an air pressure chamber. Personally, I can't get enough of the Space Station level where you fight the first boss. So much detail, and just so darn big. Every level is great in some way. The weapons are also excellent. I am a big fan of the sniper rifle. Nothing brings more satisfaction in this game then lining up, and shooting at the opponents head, then you hear ''HEAD SHOT.'' Got to love it. The modes of the game are pretty standard from most tourney style shooting games, except they are somewhat more customizable. I heard there was a mode where you storm an enemy base and try to get out, too bad it wasn't included in the final version.
Control 9.5/10
Why does it lose a half point? Well no full customization like in Quake 3 Arena. It would be a 9, but this game has auto aim, and Quake doesn't. Shame on you makers of Quake.
Fun Factor 10/10
In the 5 days I had this game, I couldn't really put the controller down. Had me hooked line and sinker. Folks, get this one while you can.
In conclusion, UT is one of the best games that Dreamcast has to offer. Better than Quake in everything but custom configuration and now that I think about it, character customization. If you have a Dreamcast, get it. If you have a PS2, forget that version, and buy a Dreamcast with UT for that. Long live Unreal Tournament.
