Gauntlet Legends
Review by DaviO
"All around great game, one of the best in many ways."
Gauntlet Legends is a classic game, in a few ways atleast. The old arcade games were wonderful, and that feature is passed on to this game. Midway created this with great creativity, and keeps the game to good old standards.
Graphics: 9/10
Gauntlet Legends isnt known for its graphics, but this installment of it great in its graphics department. In 3D this game brings much of what was missing from its original. The graphics are put in the game with great thought, and with much talent they remind me of all that i loved about gauntlet legends of old.
Music: 9/10
The music and sound effects were average and nothing too great. But the way they were used in the game was great, the timing and the 'feeling' of them was great. I always had a thing for sounds in games, and the sounds in gauntlet were worth listening to, and kept me awake and wastn too repetitive.
Replayable Factor: 9/10
This game is great for replaying, just playing with more then one person, you can play whenever and non-stop over and over againg. Even if not to beat it again, just to fight and kill is amazing, and getting all the stones and weapons is awesome too. Definately a game i will never stop replaying, and i almost never take it out of my dreamcast, unless i am to play PSO or SoA...Anyways, as i was saying, this game is great to play again and again! Makes this game worth buying and not just renting!
Story: 7/10
Keeping the story as it was before, midway made the game have a 'mercenary fill' with its quests. Having to find the stones skorn placed around was nice, yet not exactly outstanding. Going through puzzles to find each one, while fighting off enemies, and deadly bosses. Having a variety of worlds helped keep the story going. Besides the main story, there was no real twists or suprises, but the sotry itself was intriguing., there are 4 bosses, 1 each for the first four worlds.
Gameplay: 10/10
Great gameplay throughout the entire game! You get to choose from 8 people and a couple secret ones, and of course each was unique fro mthe others. Having to fight off enemies to get the sotnes and destroy the machine was a great part of the game, and i love the fighting in gauntlet legends, i always have, and in this DC version, it was great too. The puzzle/mazes were great and with multible characters playing at the same time, you got to play a great game with friends. Not being able to buy some items, and only finding them pissed me off, with multible players its more funn in the fact you have sumone else helping. The levels were made well, they were confusing at times, and challenging to get through, each with its fair share of enemies that piss you off. The lovely attack items and items of all sorts were great, and i love being able to allocate many differetn items through the game and whooping up on sum stuff while healing and all. I dont think the game was challenging enough monster wise, i never was too weak, might be cause was always overpreparing for anything that might kill or massacre me. I didnt like the leveling up, it was too fast, at times it was good, cause i neede it, but i think the leveling up were too close together.
Overall: 9/10
Altogether this is a super game, playing with more people makes it better, and you wont get bored to often. I played the game hours at a time, and i love that about RPG/Action games. Midway could have made the one-player game more exciting, by maybe making some special event or action you can do only in it. This game is similsr to sports or 007 games, its great for a long time multiplayer wise, but not really worth it for that long just one-player wise. Its a great buy for the Dreamcast, and one of my top picks for any system, i always have
