Fur Fighters
Review by stevensproat
"The definition of fun!"
This 3D action/adventure from Acclaim is one of the best games ever made. I love it. This game is total fun. Yet, not many people have heard of it, and is another underrated Dreamcast game. The game's plot is that the Fur Fighters managed to stop the evil Viggo from conquering the world one time ago. But, while the Fur Fighters were peacefully raising their families, Viggo was plotting to dominate the world again. This time, he kidnapped the Fur Fighter's families! He's also transformed each of the 6 Fur Fighters' mothers/wives/husbands into a monster and they must be rescued. Can the Fur Fighters save their families and stop Viggo from taking over the world?
So...the plot is rather predictable, but this is one of the Dreamcast's best games. Why? Well...the game is just so much fun. I'll go through each part of the game separatley.
Graphics - 10
The attention to detail in this game is amazing. For instance, in the museum, there are various paintings around. Each are different and are hilarious. In the World Quack Center, there's a game shop. Inside are adverts for various games: Shenmoo, Resident Weevil, Quack and Metropolis Sheep Racer. The game's engine can see into the background for far, and the game's camera is very good. It hardly gets stuck, making it one of the best game camera's around.
Sound - 9
Sound is a very important factor to this game. Hang around the corner, and you can hear bears grunt and snort and babies crying. The music is good too, but can get repetive and annoying. So, overall the game's sound is good and so's the music.
Gameplay - 10
The game's gameplay is varied and entertaining. You don't play as one character - there are 6 to play as, each with their own special skills. There's Roofus the dog - he can burrow at specific places, Chang the firefox - because of his small size he can fit into small gaps, Juliette the cat - she can climb up walls where there are claw marks, Rico the penguin - who can swim underwater, Bungalow the kangaroo - can jump twice as high as the other Fur Fighters and Tweek the dragon - he can glide a bit.
As each Fur Fighter has different skills, each will be needed. You can access the different Fur Fighters by seeing their faces in the various teleporters located around the world, where your character will recover health. The game's levels are huge and will keep you playing for long. You collect babies and golden tokens, as you need a certain amount of babies to fight the bosses.
Lifespan / Challenge - 9
The game presents you with various puzzles, and the levels are huge and challenging. It is difficult to collect all the babies in the levels, and as the game's fun - you will want to revisit the levels to collect all the babies. I'm only in the seconds hub in the game and I've played for about 5 hours. This game will keep you playing for weeks to come.
To rent or to buy?
Buy definitely. It is an awesome game and should be in all Dreamcast owner's collections!
