Floigan Bros. Episode 1
Review by NeoGeo
"An original platform game for Dreamcast"
Floigan Brothers is a platform and adventure game for players aged three and onwards. The two main characters are brothers as the title suggests. The shorter thinner of the two is called Hoigle and the larger, fatter and dumber is called Moigle, sounds like George and Lenny set in the present day. Arriving late in the Dreamcast’s life, can this game offer some good old-fashioned entertainment? Read on and you will find out.
Graphics: 7/10
Floigan Brothers is set in some interesting environments. The textures however are quite bright and unrealistic, this is because of the child-orientated nature of the game, so if you like adult games then this is not great. Everything is drawn smoothly and the game runs at a fast pace but there are quite a lot of jagged edges on objects that bring down the score.
Sound: 6/10
Hardly the strongest point of the game. The voiceovers played when the characters are talking are awful, not that they are low quality but it becomes annoying listening to them speak. Plus they come out with stupid phrases and their accents can get on your nerves. You have the repeated tunes like on most platform games and the goofy, comic sound effects that impress children.
Gameplay: 7/10
Controlling you character is quite easy. The controls are responsive and the digital stick above averagely sensitive. To carry out a range of actions to interact with the objects and items in the game you are given a Zelda type button display. When the computer will allow you to perform an action the, it will be written on top of the button it corresponds with. Using this system make clear what you can do buy it is not implemented as well as the Zelda games and in some cases the location where it will register the action is not quite correct.
Overall: 7/10
Floigan Brothers is a mix of ideas that works well up to a point. It has reasonably good visuals, which makes you appreciate the game more. The problem is that older gamers will not enjoy playing and a lot of gamers have moved on from the Dreamcast, they will see this as a step down.
Rent or Buy?
Buy it and have a go, you might get a bit frustrated after a while but this is the last of the good Dreamcast games you can play. It can be found quite cheaply as it didn’t sell particularly well, I even got my copy brand new and sealed.
