Sega GT
Review by mr2
"Some great features even 4 years later, but the physics..."
Sega's answer to GT/GT2 blows away the Playstation's counterpart in almost every aspect, except the most important one; sim racing
Graphics - 9
the graphics are easily well beyond anything PSX can ever put out, but just a bit behind PS2's GT3 A-spec. Sega GT's score could've gotten that extra point if some of the backrounds weren't flat (you may not even notice it if you don't look for it). Also, Sega GT runs at 30fps, no biggie.
Sound & Music - 8
good quality, but nothing to brag about. the car effects are really good, but the music is uninspiring.
Control - 2
this is where the game gets ridiculous. on top of the fact that there is a very high learning curve, you can never really master any car that's faster than a yugo.
just about every car feels like a Lincoln Town Car on ice. every car likes to oversteer at the slightest hint of a turn of the wheel. but it won't drift, nor will it spin out, it just oversteers uncontrolably.
the crash physics are really bogus. you hit a car from behind and you slow down a little. next time you do the same thing, he gets sling-shot and gains about 60-70 mph (more if your going faster).
Game features & options - 10
well, this is where you can end up playing Sega GT for 10's of hours despite having a hatred for the game.
you have just about everything GT has, but you also have drag racing (funner than you actually think), sponser races (where if you win you get a sponser = more money) and the big one; the car factory.
Sega GT let's you build your own car.
you get to chose 3, 4 (I4 & H4), 6 (V6 & I6), 8, 10 and 12 cylinder engines, as well as twin and triple rotary engines (the 13B and 20B). you can also super or turbo charge them, as well as chose there placement (mid, rear, front).
You get the chose between fwd, rwd and 4wd, than you chose one of over a dozen chassis and it's color.
Overall - 6
i wouldn't suggest buying this game because it's so frustrating. if you can somehow get around the horrible racing physics you have yourself a GT killer (probably better than GT3).
this is just a dissapointment to the Dreamcast's great line up of games, but there are still plenty of great racing games out there. (TD:LM, F355, V-ralley, MSR, TXR2...)
