Resident Evil Code: Veronica
Review by Devil_Jin
"I've changed my mind... this game ROCKS!"
In my last review, I was actually only giving my first impressions of Code Veronica after playing for about an hour or so. I've just beaten the game today, and I felt that I had been wrong at labeling it the weakest RE in the series. If anything, I still like Nemesis due to the difficulty and the excellent innovations it had on the RE series, and I am still angry that they removed several of them in RECV, such as Dodging, Ammo Mixing, Live Selection, and a consistent challenge, such as when Nemesis would chase you throughout the game. However, CV is a different type of RE game, stressing thought over action and survival, unlike the other RE's. However, when stacking it up against the other REs, this title is by far the most impressive... considering that this is only a 1st generation title, too!
Graphics - 10
By far the most impressive part of Code Veronica is the insane visuals. These blow away every RE game to date, even the graphics-enhanced PC version of RE2. From the subtle detail on the clothing, the animation for the monsters, and the look of the weaponry, it kills every game out right now for Dreamcast. This is by far the best DC game to date, and possibly EVER, although that's a while off.
Sounds - 8
While Steve's voice-acting is at first horribly idiotic, as the game progressed, it got a whole lot better, and the scene with his father was heartbreaking in several ways. Claire's voice-actor is retained from RE2, which is a plus, as it's not that bad. The sounds are mostly taken from RE2, unfortunately, as they could've taken RE3's, which were better in many ways. The music is excellent and hightens the genuinely scary aura of this game.
Controls - 9
While the buttons cannot be re-mapped, and the scheme is IMO not as good as the PS version, after an hour you'll be playing well. The controls are actually not too bad. Your index will start to hurt after a while of using thr R trigger, though...
Replay - 7
Probably the more disappointing part of RECV is the replay, as in, there isn't much, unlike RE3's, which was jammed with Epilogues, hidden outfits, random item placement, and other goodies to make the game fresh every time it was played. All you get in CV is Battle Mode, and while it is fun, it doesn't reach the insane addictiveness of Merc Mode in RE3...
Overall - 10
Capcom did a commendable job on RECV. The graphics and storyline are mind-blowing and all do a great job in conveying the raw fear that RECV provides...
