Dreamcast

Review by Rick

"I don't like Duke Nukem at all, but hey, why not? Hail to the King, Baby!"

I know I'll offend some of the Sony or Nintendo hippies out there but I don't care. Sega always has and always will make the coolest systems in existence. Just because it doesn't haver SquareSoft gives all of the Sony junkees out there the right to ridicule and outcast a system that can easily surpass the Playstation in all fields. Graphics, Loads, Memory, Game selection, everything. And I, ofr one, am glad to see Sega back on top. Now, on with the review!

Graphical Capabilities: 10/10
If you want want Sony, Nintendo, and *snicker* Microsoft are promising now, look no further than our good friend the Sega Dreamcast. With it's 128-bit Naomi Model 3 chip board, it has everything the competitions promising, only right now and not 6 months away. (Actually, if you compare specs between the Dreamcast and the Platstation 2, the PS2 is really not that much of a step up.) A gigantic color pallette allows real-time gameplay that rivals reality. Also, almost all games run at a silky-smooth 60 frames per second, more than enough to andle even the most fast-paced of graphically impressive action sequences. With the first generation gone and the second generation of Dreamcast games moving in, you can begin to see what I'm talking about. Watch the opening sequence of Resdient Evil: Code Veronica. Tell you what, I'll give you a hint: James Cameron T2 rip-off.

Sound Capabilities: 10/10

The sound chip of the Sega Dreamcast is a step-up from even the mighty mighty Saturn's revolutionary sound chip. The torment of the Genesis' and 32X's sound chips are fast becoming a distant memory.

Memory/Controls: 9/10

The VMU. Man, so many people are going to be copying off of this idea for the rest of video game history it's not even funny. It lets you see your files and even play various mini-games on the go. It can easily fit in the palm of your hand, as well. With the power of the Atari 2600 not to mention being the smallest portable and internally programmable makes this my favorite memory card and portable game system of all time. You can even go on the internet and use it to download bootleg min-games from fan web pages such as VMU Tetris or VMU Pac-Man. The only thing I have to diss is battery life. A lithium cell built-in would've jacked up the price $5-$10, but it would've been worth it. The Dreamcast controller is bar far my favorite controller of all time. An obvious influence of the Saturn's own 3-D Analog Controller, it has made some great advancements. The Analog on this controller has greatly improved over the one on the 3-D Controller, however. It combines the overall control of the N64 analog with the comfortable feel of the Playstation analog into the perfect analog controller. The buttons have a placement that feels quite natural and took some cues from that other big ''S'' company. If you're used to the PSX, you'll eat the button placement right up. The d-Pad is the only bad thing. It feels a little too analog to pull off some commands. (Especially on WWF Attitude.) If Sega had used something like the PSX's D-Pad, this would be the greatest controller there ever was or ever will be.

Game Selection: 8/10

19 games at launch?! Pretty impressive right? Wrong. Only about 3 of them were actually good titles. The rest were moderate or horrible. Sega did what the PS2 is doing in Japan right now. A lack of games calls for a rush to develop, giving you a library of overall moderate or seriously crappy games. Things are starting to perk up now, though. With games like Chu Chu Rocket and Resident Evil: Code Veronica coming out, you can tell that the Dreamcast is now starting to enforce decent production so that developers put a lot more effort into their games. Good move, Sega. Things looked bleak at launch, but they're starting to perk up quite a bit now.

Overall Fun Factor: 9/10

Finally! Sega's back in the game and crushing the competition. In EGM they said that Sega now owns 20% of the video game industry. I can honestly say, not too shabby for 5 months work. Sega always has and always will wear the video game crown of quality and respect. So, one more time, repeating my synopsis, Hail to the King, Baby!
