F355 Challenge
Review by Joeg19
"Sheer Racing Masterclass"
F355 Challenge hit arcades in 2000 and was clearly designed to be the Ultimate driving simulator. It five (I think) screens, acting as mirrors etc, and a message on the back of the seats from AM2 head and game creator Yu Suzuki (maker of previous racing classics such as Hang On and Outrun) says that he designed the game with the intention that professional race drivers would be able to take on skilled gamers and win, such was the level of realism.
F355 Challenge is a winner not only on the realism level, but on so many more levels, as you will find out below.
Graphics: One word to describe F355's graphics? Stunning. They are so good that they are almost on a par with the visuals of Shenmue (mind-blowing in case you didn't know). The car design is so beautiful you'll soon find yourself cursing AM2 for the fixed viewpoint. Did I forget to mention that? Oh yeah, you play F355 from a fixed viewpoint: in-car. It suits the game really well and obviously helps with the realistic feel.
Sound: A real mixed bag. Whilst the sound effects are fine (although you might have a heart attack if you have the volume cranked up and press start during the intro), the music is pretty damned awful, all electric guitars and wailing that sounds more like a collection of street bums than Led Zeppelin.
Gameplay: This is where F355 Challenge really comes into its own. Once you get over the fact that there is only one car in the game (the 355, believe it or not), you'll be blown away by F355's realism and attention to detail. Every second counts out on the track, as the smallest of mistakes can see you slip from pole position into last place. You have an array of controls at your disposal, the best of which is the IBS (Intelligent Braking System, not Irritable Bowel Syndrome) which, when switched on, brakes your vehicle automatically when you approach a corner, helping you slide round bends with ease. There are extensive training modes on offer, which you'll need, as well as detailed modification options.
Lifespan: The Championship mode is damned tough, and there are enough modes on offer to keep you going for a long while.
OVERALL: A cracking game and the best racer on Dreamcast, this is well worth a place in your collection, especially if you're a petrolhead, but arcade freaks are probably better sticking to Daytona.
