3. CHARACTERS

OUR HEROES AND HEROINE
----------------------
CRASH BANDICOOT

Taken from his jungle paradise and subjected to Dr. Neo Cortex's Evolvo-Ray,
Crash was the pinnacle of Cortex's genetic manipulation. But as fate would
have it, Crash was thrown out like garbage by Cortex for being a nice guy.
Crash spends his time these days sunning himself by the seaside, and is called
upon from time to time to thwart any World Domination Plans Dr. Neo Cortex
might have in the works. Can Crash do it again?

COCO BANDICOOT

Coco, Crash's little sister, was also snatched from the jungle and genetically
enhanced by Cortex. She is a super-smart computer expert, with a love of Hong
Kong martial art movies, and one heck of a scooter rider! She's always there
to back up her big bro, and not afraid to mix it up herself.

AKU AKU

A kindly omnipotent witch doctor mask, Aku Aku guides and aids Crash and Coco
in stopping Cortex's and Uka Uka's devious plans.

DR. NEO CORTEX AND HIS DISCIPLES
--------------------------------
CRUNCH

Cortex's most radical weapon yet created, Crunch is a perfectly tuned Super-
Bandicoot! A bionic brute, he has been genetically created for one reason and
one reason alone:
DESTROY CRASH BANDICOOT!

TINY THE TIGER

Tiny is a hulking ferocious beast, who some believe may have been Dr. Cortex's
first foray into genetic alteration. Don't let his size fool you; Tiny may be
muscle-bound, but he certainly isn't a dimwitted buffoon.

DINGODILE

Another freak of nature created by Cortex in his pursuit of the perfect
genetic warrior. Dingodile, a half dingo, half crocodile monstrosity who
enjoys reading Shakespeare, playing croquet, and roasting orange marsupials
with his flamethrower.

DR. N. (NEFARIOUS) TROPY

Known for his diabolical work in quantum warp technology and his Time Twister
device, Dr. N. Tropy can usually by found disturbing the temporal flow by
creating time paradoxes just for laughs.

DR. N. GIN

Half man, half machine with half a missile sticking out of his head, Dr. N.
Gin, Cortex's right-hand man, is a scientific genious in robotics and
cybernetics.

UKA UKA

The evil twin mask of Aku Aku, Uka Uka is the controlling force behind
Cortex's obsession with conquering the world.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. ITEMS

WUMPA FRUIT

Collect 100 pieces of Wumpa Fruit and earn a free life (1-up).

AKU AKU (WITCH DOCTOR MASK)

When possessing an Aku Aku Mask, Crash is shielded from one enemy's attack or
contact. Collect three Aku Aku Masks to earn temporary invulnerability from
all minor dangers.

CRYSTALS

Crystals are the most important items in the game. Find all 25 Crystals
(there's one hidden in every level except the Boss levels) to finish the game.
In some levels you will win the Crystal at the end or after completing a
specific challenge.

GEMS

Gems are more difficult to find than Crystals, but well worth the effort.

There are two types of Gems:
Clear Gems are your reward for breaking all of the crates in a level or for
completing a secret area.

Coloured Gems are found in special levels and transport you to hidden areas.

RELICS

You can win Relics by re-entering the level after collecting the Crystal. You
can play in Time Trial mode. If you beat the level under the pre-designated
time (shown before you enter the level), you will be rewarded with a Sapphire,
Gold or Platinum Relic.

Sapphire is the easiest to obtain. Gold is a little harder to earn, while
Platinum is the hardest to get.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. CRATES

CRATE

This is the most common type of crate. It has no markings and it contains
Wumpa Fruit.

BOUNCY BOX

If you jump on these crates, you will be able to bounce and receive a load of
Wumpa Fruit. Be careful not to spin them, or you will lose some Wumpa Fruit.

SURPRISE BOX

These crates have yellow question marks on them (?). The contents of these
are totally random, so you never know what you'll find.

AKU AKU BOX

These boxes have small pictures of Aku Aku on them. Collect one mask for one
hit point, two masks for two hit points, and three masks for temporary
invincibility.

CHECKPOINT CRATE

These crates have a large yellow 'C' on them. If you smash one, you will be
returned to that point if you die, instead of starting from the very beginning
of the level.

CRASH CRATE

These crates have a small Crash Bandicoot icon on them. Simply bust them open
to gain an extra life. Yay.

TNT CRATE

Hop on these to trigger the three-second fuse. Stand clear before they blow.
Be careful not to spin or slide into these or... KA-BOOM!

SLOT BOX

These boxes have flashing icons on them. Spin them to win your prize, but do
it quick before it turns into an unbreakable iron crate.

OUTLINE BOX

These only show the outline to a crate. It will become a regular one once the
Switch Box in that level is activated.

SWITCH BOX

This is a steel crate with a large yellow '!' on it. Hit them to
activate those pesky Outline Boxes.

NITRO CRATE

These are green crates with the word 'NITRO' written in yellow and a yellow
stripe at the top and bottom. Touch these and BLAMMO!

NITRO SWITCH BOX

These look like Switch Boxes, but are made of wood and have a yellow stripe on
them. Usually found near the end of a level, these will detonate any Nitro
Crates left in the level. They have a large yellow '!' on them.

SPRING CRATE

These crates have a large yellow '?' on them. Jump on these wooden crates to
give you a bit of extra height on your jumps.

IRON SPRING CRATE

The same as a regular Spring Crate, except it is made of green iron. Jump on
it to give you a massive height boost.

STEEL CRATES

These crates are made of green iron frames, with a brown middle and a dark
blue 'X' on them. You will need to use other moves to break them open such as
the Body Slam or Stomp. This is these crates are very strong.

TIME BOX

These yellow crates are found only in Time Trial Mode, and have big red
numbers on them, either '1', '2' or '3'. Break them open to freeze the clock
for the amount f seconds on the box.

INVISIBILITY CRATE

Break these open to become invisible! You will be an outline of Crash on the
screen, and some objects cannot detect you if you are invisible.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. TIME TRIAL

After you finish a level the first time, race through it again in Time Trial
Mode. You can win a Sapphire, Gold or Platinum relic, depending on how fast
you go.

SAPPHIRE: EASY
GOLD: MEDIUM
PLATINUM: HARD

The pre-designated time is displayed when you stand next to the level portal.
This is the time you must beat.

Touch the clock near the beginning of the level to activate Time Trial Mode,
or you'll just play the level normally.

Clear the level in the shortest time that you can. Break Time Boxes to freeze
the timer to help you get a low time.

You don't loose lives in Time Trial, so try as many times as you want.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. NEW POWERS

Each time you defeat a Boss, you will earn a new power, which you can use for
the rest of the game.

TIP TOE: L2 (You can tip toe along Nitro crates and they won't explode!)
SUPER DOUBLE JUMP: X, then X again at the top of the first jump
DEATH TORNADO: SQUARE (tap repeatedly)
CRASH DASH: R2+DIRECTIONAL BUTTONS
BAZOOKA: Hold L1 to aim, then press O to fire

ARCTIC ANTICS
-------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem, 1 Coloured Gem (Blue) and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 0'37.00
             GOLD: 0'45.00
             SAPPHIRE: 1'15.00

This level is a fairly easy one, and a good place for you to practice your
skills. Try to dodge the seals and penguins. Skiing men will also obstruct
your path, so just avoid them the best you can. When you reach one of the
checkpoints, you will be at a lake area. There is a stretch of ice with Wumpa
fruit on that will take you to the next area. There is also a Bonus platform
on the left. If you manage not to die, the Death Route will be available to
the left of the Bonus. The Death Route is littered with Nitros, so watch out.
Hop on the crates at the end and jump to grab the Blue Gem. Back in the main
level, the Crystal and Clear Gem are near the end. Well done - you have
completed the first level. TIP: Once you have obtained the Bazooka, shoot the
mammoths to gain extra lives.

CRATES: 147 (including Bonus)
ENEMIES: Skiing men, whales, seals and penguins (mammoths are not really
enemies)

TORNADO ALLEY
-------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 1'00.00
             GOLD: 1'20.00
             SAPPHIRE: 2'00.00

For this level you will use the Glider. To complete the level, you must
destroy the six generators. They are the big things that float above the
tornadoes. To blow them up, simply blast away at them. However, there are
small fighters that try to kill you. Your health is shown in the bottom left
corner. If it gets too low, just shoot the white balloons with the red '+'s
on them. To destroy the regular crates, just destroy the yellow balloons.
You get the Crystal and the Clear Gem at the end. Level 2 complete!

CRATES: 15
ENEMIES: Small fighter aircraft

BAMBOOZLED
----------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 0'25.00
             GOLD: 0'35.00
             SAPPHIRE: 1'15.00

For this level you will use the ball. You will be relieved to hear that there
are no enemies on this level - the only way you can die is by falling off of
the platforms. There are also 'elevators' - platforms that go up and down.
If you miss the elevator, wait patiently for it to come back down. Head down
the large ramps to go through the level. You will come to a fork. If you are
trying to get all the crates, go to your left (away from the elevator). Be
careful when going down the ramp, as it ends fairly suddenly, and it is filled
with Nitros. When you have gotten all the regular crates, return to the fork
and go up the elevator. You will get 2 extra lives! You will receive you
Crystal and Clear Gem at the end (if you broke all the crates).

CRATES: 126
ENEMIES: N/A

WIZARDS AND LIZARDS
-------------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem, 1 Coloured Gem (Green) and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 0'35.00
             GOLD: 0'45.00
             SAPPHIRE: 1'15.00

Slide into the Knights to kill them, and dodge the green things that the
wizards shoot at you. After you go through the first checkpoint, you will see
the Bonus platform. Step forward and a GIANT monster will chase you, so run
like crazy, jumping over the pits as you go. When you reach the next
checkpoint, the monster will get stuck behind the arch. Step forward again
and he breaks loose and gives chase once more, so keep running and jumping
over the pits. The monster will get stuck again. Once again, break the
checkpoint and run away from the monster. This time there will be Nitro
crates in the way, so dodge them. Run over the bridge (watch out because it
falls) and the monster will be stranded and will not bother you again. Phew!
The Death Route is just down the path, and if you survive it, you will be
rewarded with the Green Gem. At the end of the level you will get your
Crystal and Clear Gem (if you broke all the crates). TIP: To get Platinum in
the Time Trial, hit SELECT as soon as you touch the clock. You will be
transported to the end of the level! This is known as the '3 second Time
Trial'.

CRATES: 128 (including Bonus)
ENEMIES: Knights, wizards, bats and a very large monster!

COMPACTOR REACTOR
-----------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 2 Clear Gems and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 0'55.00
             GOLD: 1'05.00
             SAPPHIRE: 1'45.00

Once on the mine cart, just let it roll down the track and break the crates as
you go. There is a small turn off to the left just as you start, but ignore
it as it is filled with Nitro crates. Along the way, dodge any Nitros you
come across and collect the fruit. When you get the Yellow Gem from a later
level, the big board with a Yellow Gem on it will disappear, allowing you
access (steer right to get onto it). This path is crammed with Nitro crates -
so watch out. If you are lucky enough to reach the end of the 'path of death'
as I like to call it, you will be rewarded with a Clear Gem. You can get the
other one at the end for breaking all the crates. For a safer journey, just
let the cart follow its normal route - just avoids the Nitros along the way.
Once over the two bridges, you will be thrown off of the cart. Now that you
are back on foot, break the checkpoint and continue, avoiding the drills as
you go. Also, watch out for plutonium-throwing scientists. Near the Bonus
Platform is a checkpoint that you should break. Hop on the Bonus Platform if
you want and continue once you have finished it. Dodge the large stamps and
the lasers near the end. Grab the Crystal and Clear Gem (if you broke all the
boxes) and exit the level.

CRATES: 155 (including Bonus)
ENEMIES: Plutonium-throwing Scientists

BOSS 1: RUMBLE IN THE ROKS
--------------------------

For this fight, you will be in the Ball. Crunch will enter and also enter a
ball, so avoid him or your health will deplete. Two rocks will be released.
At the start, they are grey. To win the fight, you must change their colours
to blue - do this by rolling into them. Their colours are shown at the top of
the screen. However, if Crunch touches one before you, it will turn into a
fireball and go orange. Avoid it and it will cool down, then you can change
it back to blue. When both rocks are blue, they will rain down on Crunch and
his health will go down. Three rocks will then be released, so repeat the
process and Crunch will be attacked by the rocks. Four rocks will be
released, so change them to blue again and kill Crunch.

NEW POWER!!
TIP TOE: L2

WARP ROOM 2

JUNGLE RUMBLE
-------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 1'12.00
             GOLD: 1'12.00
             SAPPHIRE: 2'00.00

A fairly easy level. Cross the bridge and follow the path, avoiding the small
warriors and braking the crates as you go. Head under the marble arch and
down the slope to find a checkpoint and a handy Aku Aku mask. Jump over the
ledge and down to the steel box steps. Some of these steel crates can be
smashed using a simple body slam. Continue again and go down the river. When
you reach the steel '!' box, smash it and back track a little to the area
underneath the marble arch in the corner, the one with TNT and Nitros
everywhere. Inside are some handy items including an extra life. The Bonus
Platform is just down the river, along with a checkpoint. Approach the jeep
and we're off! Flee the charging rhinos that come, going up the ramps to
collect crates. Follow the trail of fruit if you're having trouble, and avoid
the pits. After a while, the rhinos will go away, but once you break the
checkpoint they'll be back for more - so keep driving hard! This second part
has Nitro crates everywhere, so be extremely careful. The rhinos will
permanently leave you alone and you crash into a large tree on its side. Now
simply cross the bridge, grab the Crystal and Clear Gem (if you broke all the
crates) and enter the vortex to complete the level.

CRATES: 155 (including Bonus)
ENEMIES: Small warriors and charging rhinos

SEA SHELL SHENANIGANS
---------------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 0'52.38
             GOLD: 1'07.91
             SAPPHIRE: 1'23.60

This is the first underwater level, so take it steady at first to learn the
controls. X to swim, O and SQUARE to spin. Go forward and dodge the
jellyfish. Be very careful, as bombs drop from above, and the fish are all
lethal, so stay away from them. Some crates are hidden behind seaweed, so
search everywhere. Kill the first scuba diver and continue, watching out for
fish and bombs. Go through the tube and kill the deep-sea diver at the end,
also breaking the checkpoint. Head into the next tube and down. At the
bottom you will be going the opposite way, follow the fruit if you get lost.
Head forward and into the next tube, where you will need to swim down it. At
the bottom, smash the checkpoint and head right into the cave. Go into the
tube and swim right as fast as you can to avoid the bomb. Do not go down.
When you get out the other side, you will be in the sub. Use the torpedoes as
you go to clear the path ahead. You can also destroy bombs with it. Break
the checkpoint at the bottom of the next tube and continue. Go through the
last set of tubes and grab the Crystal and Clear Gem (if you broke all the
crates) at the end.

CRATES: 99
ENEMIES: Fish, sharks, scuba divers, deep-sea divers (bombs are not really
enemies, just obstacles)

BANZAI BONSAI
-------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 2 Clear Gems and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 0'45.00
             GOLD: 1'00.00
             SAPPHIRE: 1'30.00

For this level you will play as Coco Bandicoot. She cannot use any of Crash's
powers. Go forward, jumping from platform to platform while avoiding the fish
and storks. Don't fall in the water or else you will die. Once through the
hole, the platforms will be moving, so be careful and break the nearby
checkpoint before continuing. You will soon encounter small dinosaurs that
you must avoid. Go through the next hole and into the maze area. Go through
it, avoiding dinosaurs and knife-throwing wizards while breaking crates.
Smash the checkpoint and go over towards the bridge. When you get the Red Gem
from a later level, the Red Gem will be here. Jump on it and it will take you
to a secret area, filled with Nitro crates and enemies. If you get to the end
of it, you will be rewarded with 1 of 2 Clear Gems. To get the other one, you
must break all of the crates and obtain it at the end of the level. Go past
the bridge and past the rotating platform. Jump over the stepping-stones and
into the area with Nitro crates, falling platforms and 'Gong-smashers'(men
with large beaters). Jump through the hole at the end and continue. There is
also a Bonus Platform if you want to use it. Jump up onto the bouncy awning
and make your way over the rooftops and break the checkpoint at the end. When
you get to the balcony, just run through it and Grab the Crystal and Clear Gem
(if you broke all the crates) at the end. Don't forget to smash the Nitro
Switch Box.

CRATES: 152 (including Bonus)
ENEMIES: Fish, storks, wizards, dinosaurs and gong-smashers

THAT SINKING FEELING
--------------------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 1'15.00
             GOLD: 2'20.00
             SAPPHIRE: 3'30.00

For this level you will use the Firefly. The object of the level is to
destroy the 6 ships. To do this, lock on to them and release X once the lock
on is complete. There are also small fighters in the air shooting at you, and
the ships also put you under fire. I've found that the best way to do this
level is to fly around the island and shoot each ship you come to once, then
move on. As each ship needs three hits to destroy it, you will need to circle
the island six times. If you are trying to collect the crates, then fly into
the balloons dotted around to smash them open. If you are running low on
health, destroy the white balloons with the red '+'s on them. You get the
Crystal once all six ships have been destroyed, and a Clear Gem if you brake
all of the crates.

CRATES: 12
ENEMIES: Ships and small fighter aircraft

H2 OH NO
--------
LEVEL CONTENTS: 1 Crystal, 1 Clear Gem and 1 Relic
RELIC TIMES: PLATINUM: 0'50.00
             GOLD: 1'00.00
             SAPPHIRE: 1'35.00

For the first part of the level, you will be underwater and will use the Sub.
Advance forward, avoiding fish and light divers while breaking crates and
collecting fruit. The bombs also return, so be careful. A good tip is to
fire a couple of torpedoes in front of you to clear the path of any dangers.
Smash the checkpoint and continue. Go up the slope and the sub will crash and
you will be throw out and be on foot. Go forward and smash the checkpoint .
Go past the scientist just after the small puddle in the little tunnel and
through the archway. The green water you see is dangerous, so stay out of it.
Use the crates to make your way across. Break the checkpoint and continue.
Once across the second area of green water, grab the Aku Aku mask up ahead and
continue on your way. Go past the green water area with Nitro crates and go
forward to the Bonus Platform, and jump on it if you want. Avoid the fish and
continue. Grab the Crystal and go past the laser beams, dodging them as you
go. Don't forget to hit the Nitro Switch Box. At the end, grab the Clear Gem
if you

CRATES: 165 (including Bonus)
ENEMIES: Fish, sharks, plutonium-throwing scientists(bombs, green water and
lasers are not really enemies, just obstacles)

BOSS 2: DRAIN DAMAGE
--------------------
It may take you a few tries to beat this boss, as it is fairly hard. You have
to jump across small platforms, get to Crunch and attack him. However, he
will doing this, he fires laser beams at you. If he fires and blue beam at
you, jump over it and if Crunch fires a green beam at you, crouch and wait for
it to pass. Jump from platform to platform when you get the chance. You have
to reach and knock out Crunch four times to defeat him. It is fairly tricky -
you have been warned.

NEW POWER!!
SUPER DOUBLE JUMP: X, then X again at the top of the first jump

More coming soon.
