=================
 1.) Introduction
=================

This is the 4 Resident Evil 4 PAL - Unofficial Guide to all things Different.
It contains all the exciting information that you never really cared about, but
asked for anyway, regarding the differences between PAL and US NTSC versions.
Being the holder of all three major versions of the game, and a person with too
much time on my hands, I wrote this out of boredom, but if you're reading it
then it's probably serving some sort of purpose.

====================
 2.) Version History

             - My poor English was corrected in many places

Version 1.01.0

====================
 3.) Non spoiler Q&A
====================

Q: Is the PAL version censored/cut?
A: German version - Yes
   All other PAL - No

Q: Is the PAL version better than the NTSC version?
A: No.

Q: Is the bonus disc worth buying the PAL version for?
A: No.

Q: Should I play on Easy mode first?
A: No. Playing on Easy diminishes the gaming experience due to chunks of the
game being cut/bypassed, and also breeds bad ammunition conservation habits.
If you're "hardcore", you could get an unlocked system file and go straight for
Professional mode. Normal is enough for most people to start off with.

Q: Is the PAL Pro mode easier/harder than the NTSC Pro mode?
A: Yes. As for which one it is, then that's a different set of questions
altogether.

Q: Isn't the PAL Pro mode like Super MEGA Hax0r Pro Turbo mode with a free set
of steak knives?
A: Absolutely not.

============================
 4.) PAL Version differences
============================

Guns
-------

- Red9 exclusive firepower becomes 6.5, up from 5.0
- Blacktail exclusive firepower becomes 4.5, up from 3.4
- Regular Shotgun exclusive costs 40,000 ptas, down from 90,000 ptas

- Bolt Action Rifle exclusive firepower becomes 30.0, up from 18.0
  - This is the ONLY rifle difference, and is explained below

"Rifle speed are quoted somewhat differently in PAL than they are in NTSC.

In NTSC the Bolt Action Rifle has a lower firing speed number (0.67), but
shoots slower than other guns, where as with all other guns in the game a low
firing speed figure means a faster firing gun.
The figure in PAL is 2.73, and is more representative of the actual firing
speed.

With the Semi-Auto Rifle, all the firing speed figures are 0.4 greater than
their NTSC counterparts, so firing speed is quoted as 1.83 instead of 1.43
for regular, and 0.80 instead of 0.40 for exclusive.
This is an offset adjustment to make the figure more representative of actual
time between two shots.

These two guns remain unchanged in PAL, excepting the Bolt Action Rifle
exclusive firepower becoming 30.0, up from 18.0"

Items
--------

- Ammo pick-ups are decreased, in both size and frequency.
- Money pick-ups are increased.
- TMP rounds come in boxes of 30, as well as 25 and 50
- Handcannon rounds come in boxes of 5 and 10, and there are no boxes of 2
- First Aid Sprays cost 5,000 ptas, and resell for 2,500 ptas, as opposed to
10,000/5,000 for NTSC.
- First Aid Sprays cannot be purchased if you are already holding one
- The Merchant keeps a low stock of First Aid Sprays.
- An El Gigante will not leave you 15,000 ptas if you dunk him in the molten
hot stuff, exit and return.
- Tactical vest becomes unavailable in Professional mode, which aids the player
as it has no effect in this mode, and saves the player potentially 30,000 to
60,000 ptas on buying a useless item.

Gameplay
-----------

- Enemies fall from ledges, edges and bridges more easily when damaged.
- Leon doesn't "teleport" to Mendez's body after killing him.
- One of the first two monks in Chapter 3-1 has a different roaming pattern
(most likely a corrected pattern.)
- There is an extra typewriter just outside the clock tower, after the bridge
has been rotated.
- A rocket launcher can be used to destroy the rock blocking your way in the
mine, thus removing the need for the explosives puzzle element to be completed.

Aesthetics
-------------

- There is no 480p output compatibility, as all PAL GameCubes do not have
digital output hardware.
- Assignment Ada and The Mercenaries sub-games are only on Disc 2
- "Loading..." appears in the bottom right-hand corner when loading new areas.
- Both rifles have C-Stick = Zoom indication when aiming, with or without a
scope attached.
- Puzzle and merchant dialogues are much improved.
- Blue halos instead of white halos appear to mark the location of spinels and
the Los Illuminados Pendant when you kill the cultists as they have their
ceremony, Chapter 3-2.
- Krauser says he "Fights for Umbrella" in ruins fight dialogue.
- Credits are done slightly differently, with companies listed in both Japanese
and English.
- Language selection:
  - English
  - German
  - French
  - Spanish
  - Italian

==========================
 5.) Easy Mode differences
==========================

Leon
-------

- You start with:
  - Handgun (with 10 rounds loaded) + 20 rounds
  - Shotgun (with 6 shells loaded) + 15 shells
  - 1 First Aid Spray

- You can carry 25 shotgun shells in two blocks instead of 15
- You can carry 20 rifle rounds in two blocks instead of 10

Gameplay
-----------

- The cabin fight with Luis requires less kills to complete
- The castle is unlocked, and the area where you get the castle key is locked
off.
- Absence of scythe monks when you lower the staircase in reflecting pool room.
- No monks spawn after deactivating the gallery security system, required to
get the Goat Ornament.
- Room after Garrador cage match is empty, until switch is thrown to raise the
walkway and you climb the ladder.
- The garden maze is blocked off, and the door requiring the completed
moonstone is open.
- Red Gem is in brick room adjacent to the dining room, as it is usually in the
hedge maze.
- In the Ashley control section, monks take only two torches to kill.
- After nabbing the Serpent Ornament, only one knight comes after Ashley, and
it's quite slow in chasing.
- The King's grail is already in place, cutting out the armoured knight room.
- Sample Retrieved file is in the same room as the merchant, to the to the
right of the bars blocking the hallway to the King's grail/knight battle area.
- There is no combat or catapult hazard on the clock tower exterior at all.
- The clock tower internal area is blocked off, and a single lever on the
outside activates the rotating bridge.
- There is only 1 Garador in the room after the clock tower, after crossing the
bridge.
- No helmetheads appear if you move forward in the room after the clock tower,
after crossing the bridge.
- There's only 1 Dr Salvador in the area with the Mine Key, before the mine
cart ride.
- The spiked ceiling doesn't drop in the room between the Mine Key area and the
mine cart ride.
- Verdugo doesn't have as much life and the elevator arrives sooner if you
choose to evade him.
- Dr Salvador in the mine that drops right in front of the rock where you use
explosives, after you reset the circuit breaker and go back towards the power
switch, is removed.
- No fire arrow snipers in Salazar Tower when you use lift.
- No Yellow Herb at beginning of island.
- Only two swings of the wrecking ball required to break crumbling wall.
- Timer stops when you reach the Ornamental wall in the ruins after the final
battle with Krauser.

The following are WRONG in every sense of the word.

- There's no chain saw guy on the first village bit.

There are in fact a possible TWO Dr Salvadors in the first village section,
even in Easy mode.

- Oven Man is removed

Oven Man is definitely there, stewing in his own juices.

 6.) German Version differences
===============================

There has been much conjecture about the German version of the game, and not
very many facts.
After receiveing email from a few Germans telling me that most of what I had
was wrong, I have taken it upon myself to correct these errors in the name of
the holy and the divine.

The differences only apply to the German version which is only sold in GERMANY,
and not in the partially German-speaking countries Austria, Swiss or
Letzebourg.

Packaging
------------

Printed on the front of case cover slip in the lower left corner, with the
graphics of the disc, very minutely, is a USK labelling which reads "Keine
jugendfreigabe gemäß § 14 JuSchG"
Translated, this means "Adults only, §14
'youth-protection-law'(JugendSchutzGesetz)"

The initial German release of RE4 has an erroneous packaging, leading many to
think there are two different version of the game on sale in Germany.
The first print already contains the 'corrected' version of the game, as does
the RE4 Gamecube Bundle, but the slip insert was printed when Nintendo was
still assuming they could publish the game as intended.
The package is coded DOL-G4BP-NOE, the P standing for the complete PAL
territory, and the statement "Uncensored version. Identical to the Japanese and
American version." printed on the back.

The second release version has the code DOL-G4BD-NOE printed on the disc, the
second D standing for Deutschland, and do not claim to be the 'Uncensored'
version.

Gameplay
-----------

According to my special sources, the following are correct:

- Assignment Ada is missing.
- Mercenaries is missing.
- The Chicago Typewriter and the Handcannon are not included.
(As far as is known, as these cannot be unlocked from the missing mini-games.
Could possibly be unlocked using an Action Replay, but this has not been
tested.)

And therefore, the following incorrect

- Heads don't explode when using a rifle.
- A few camera shots are missing when Mike crashes.
- Oven Man is missing.
- Garradors no longer can impale Leon.
- The scene with Ashley, the two Ganados ad the camera is somewhat cut (hint to
a rape!)
- Loading times 1 to 2 seconds longer.
- There are far less incendiary grenades, but more standard hand grenades.

There are many theories as to why the mini-games were cut, and here the two
I've heard:

- As is common practice for publishers to get faster product release, Capcom
showed an incomplete version to the USK*, and mini-games added in the release
version would cause the software to have to re-reviewed, so the mini-games were
dropped/disabled.

- Including the mini-games would have caused the software to become illegal, or
at least severely constricted, due to certain laws regarding violence and
violent situations.

* "Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle" - A not profit organisation
constructed to ensure that no entertainment software is published in Germany
that violates human rights, the German constitution, or the values these
protect. It also tries to protect minors against products that fall within the
scope of the law the BPS** enforces, by assigning a rating that recommends a
minimum player's age.

** "Bundesprüfstelle für jugendgefährdende Schriften" Federal authority
responsible for policing video and computer game content, among other forms of
media.

Bonus Disc
-------------

The Bonus Disc, which was included in the hardware bundle, has two different
versions.
In addition to the general PAL version, there is once again a special German
version, which excludes the trailer videos of RE2, RE3 and RE-CVX, as these
three games are completely forbidden by law in Germany.
Although they are quite old and not not nearly as 'explicit' and gory as RE4 or
other games of today are, they are still forbidden and publicly showing them in
any way is completely illegal.

=================================
 7.) Japanese Version differences
=================================

Yes, I know it's NTSC, but it is practically as the PAL version is, with a few
differences.

- Headshot kills, even with non-explodable heads, as in the first section
before the main village, cause meaty chunks to fly out from the head with the
head exploding sound, even though the head stays intact.
- Leon decapitations have been removed.
- Ashley chapter uses a multiple fixed camera view instead of over shoulder
roving camera.
