I found out that back in Chapter 6 with Edwin Lindsey, I didn't know the Mantarok rune for spells was there and didn't end up picking it up. Is this bad? And can I still complete the game without this?
No. The Mantorok rune is optional. It does various things, like with the recover spell it will heal both your health <i>and</i> your sanity. That's just one of the many things it does.
You can still beat the game without it.
