Resident Evil 3: Nemesis
Review by Glutted
"A great game... in 1999."
Resident Evil 3: Nemesis was originally on the Sony Playstation. Released in 1999, the graphics are even more evidence. Later in around 2001, Capcom promised Nintendo to have to bring all of the previously released mainstream Resident Evils over to the Gamecube. They even brought RE0 over to the Gamecube, which had never been released before. They also remade RE1 onto the Gamecube. But what about RE2, RE3, and RE: Code Veronica X? They just ported them. Porting is when you take the game from one system and put it onto another system. So, basically the only difference between the Gamecube 2003 port of a 1999 game is the copyright dates. I, along with many other people, am disappointed with Capcom. They could have remade RE3 instead of just porting. Hopefully Capcom will really remake RE3 in the near future on another system. RE3 was a great game in 1999, and I would have been pleased if they updated the graphics and story a bit.
Storyline: 10/10
You are Jill Valentine, member of the Raccoon City Police department. Raccoon City is currently overrun with zombies. Zombies used to be human beings, but the evil company Umbrella infected them with a contagious T-Virus. The government plans on nuking all of Raccoon City so that the Virus can't spread. You have to escape before you get blown into smithereens. The plot is pretty straightforward, but well thought of. You will sometimes meet other survivors in the city, who will help you out.
Graphics: 5/10
These graphics would have been considered good back in 1999. But, the same exact graphics are used in a game 4 years later, in the next generation (video game-wise). They simply do not compare with the graphics of other Gamecube games. The graphics are barely better than that of a Nintendo 64 game. Of course, the graphics are fully 3-D, but they are blocky and lack the detail and texture that most other GC games have. I just can't stand the graphic, especially knowing that its on a system with a lot more potential. I wish Capcom had updated the graphics a bit while porting it. The graphics are probably the only thing that really proves that it's a port; if they had made the graphics as good as RE1 remake, the game would have looked newer and a lot less like a port, and it would have sold better. The main thing that labels any game a port is the outdated graphics.
Sound/Music: 7/10
The voices are cheesy, but still a lot better than the original RE1. The voices sound exaggerated at some times, while at other times they sound impassive and monotonous. The music, like all other REs, is made to add to the scariness factor of the game. When you are against some bosses, fast and intense music will play. When you are in abandoned buildings, like the police station, slow and maybe a bit sad music will play. That music matches with the general mood of Raccoon city, and the tragic events that have happened.
Gameplay: 9/10
Chances are that on some message boards and forums, people will start complaining about the controls. They say that its impossible to move, and that the camera angles suck. Those people and need to be more tolerant and accept the fact that the camera angles and controls aren't perfect. Capcom gave this game the camera angles and its controls to make the game scarier. With the camera angles, you never know what is around the next corner! That only makes the game scarier. With the controls, I think it makes moving around require more precision.
Overall: 7/10
Only buy this version if you have not owned or have played any earlier version of RE3. If you haven't played this before, you will really enjoy it on the Gamecube. This game is like all the other REs; it has the same kind of puzzles and monsters. This game is a port, not a remake. It also has some unlockables every time you beat the game, so that adds replay value.
