Star Fox: Assault

Review by Ayamathefox

"Ayama gives Starfox:Assault an 8/10"

Well .... I'm going to be painfuly true about the length here. I've LOVED the starfox games since I was but a lass, and Starfox Assault was by FAR the shortest I've plaied yet. I sat down when I got it on my thirteenth birthday, and beat it three hours latter >__>. Its really boring to go through the same protocall three times, and then be done with it. Doing the same ten missions (YES, ONLY TEN), is realy monotounous. However, I was VERY impressed with the story line, how things end up, and the fact that a lot of old famillar places come up in either single mode, or in versous mode as unlockable levels of play. I liked where things were going between Fox and Krystal's relationship, but as all of you who have plaied Command, you know that dosen't last long *sighs*. I liked the fact that our little mystery vixen, Krystal, was back, and the fact that Starwolf (mostly) was back again. I didn't like what they did with the Starwolf team either. I saw Panther, and almost chocked to death laughing. A flirty, womanizing black panther. Its so idiotic, that it's funny. Panther is a big joke in this game. I also didn't like how it ended with Pigma, the whole "currupted by the Aperoids" thing didn't work for me, even if it was fun to blast the fat hog's face to smitherines >DD, and I was sad to see that Andrew Oinkeny had like no say in this game AT ALL, and that Andross wasen't there for me to kick around *pouts*. Seriously, Oinkeny is your first boss, you blow up his ship, and then thats it, and no more Andross *cries*.

The controls, however, I did like. Three types of controls to fit whoever is playing was a great idea on Nintendo's part. And the unlockables are great for MP mode. The only thing I have to complain about there is the fact that you have to go through A LOT of versus rounds to get what you want. I swere I was jumping off Zonous sea bace just to get the round over with, but its worth it. My brother and I are still flying around in Wolfans instead of Arwings :D.The interchangable gamemodes made MP this game's strong point. Theres Missle Launcher Bout, Crown Capture, and other games like that, and there has to be somthing to say about each characters own unique taunting phrases, expecally Krystal's very sexy "Here I go", and "Try me" taunts XDD. It was half-half for me on the fact that depending on which controller slot you play with, your character's outfit changes colors, I compair Krystal's third player (yellow) suit, to a hunnybee, and dressed in green spandex (fourth player controller), she looks like a Christmas tree with a blue star on top, and a womanly figure XDD. Its cool to watch your character change outfit colores, but I expected more out of all together apperance of the characters, since thats always been one of Nintendo's strong points. And I expected to see Krystal's Staff at least once, but its not even mentioned. Its almost like the events on Dionsaur Planet never happened, like Krystal has always been a mercenary, working under General Pepper. I was seriously dissapointed on that note.

I was happy with the graphics, but not the fact that during breafings, Krystal's eyes almost glaze over with shine if she moves her head a certain way, almost like she's a qupie doll, and that our dear old General Pepper, has no iris to his eyes, there compleatly white, and it looks like hes dead. I also expected Peppy to be much older than he was, since they made him sound so old ans raspy in Adventures. The leveles are GORGOUS, and, suprisingly, the Aperoid's homeworld is the most stricking of all, and I LOVE the moving floors, and hezxagon's that come up around your feet, but I was dissapointed by how they changed Sauria (Dinosaur Planet), from the oh so familiar Thorntail Hollow, to almost a Jungle-like setting with blan temple-like buildings, and flat, empty feilds, AND NOT WARPSTONE TO BE FOUND AT ALL, and the dinosaures are just a sad sight, all laying there being apperoidized XDD.I was happy to see, however, that we get a glimps into Cornarians' lifestyles, it was really cool to run around the city, and read all the signs. The sound didn't work, however. The voices are shotty, like there always speaking through a comunicater, the music is nothing for Nintendo to be proud of either. Other then the classic, oh so reconizable, Starfox theme, its more background noise, and just stresses you out more than anything. The Music in Adventures would get stuck in my head, I still to this day ocassionaly start humming the music you here in Snowhorn Wastes XDD. But seriously, the sound in Assault is no good.

The enemies are so simplistic, its almost funny how there disigned, and most of the bosses are just plain U-G-L-Y (they ain't got no alliby XDD). And boy are those giant bugs dumb. The'll come at you, like twenty or so one-hit-kill aperoids, and thats about the only way they beat you, through sheer numbers. And most of them are not really dangerous persay, but moreannoying if anything eles. The only challanging part is getting enough kills to make the metle score at the end, and thats not even that hard, concidering that silver level times your score by two, and gold level by three, and you get a time bonous if you complete the mission in under thirty minutes. The only reason that I play single mode anymore is for the unlockables, and for refrance for Krystal (I iz a Krystal artist).

Don't get me started on the vehicles >__>. It was just idiotic the way they did that. You have your Landmaster tank, and your Arwing jet, and the controls are basic, and unorthidox. I did like that the Arwing went from it's rounded looking shape in Adventures, to it's classic, sleeker, more pointed shape that it's kept since SF1 for the SNES. I LOVE wingriding, wingman missions are the best. Its too bad that you only have two missions like this in single mode. You ride on Falco's wing on Fichina, and then play as "Wolf's seragent gun" (quote Panther) on Cornaria. The perk to wing riding is that you can do this quite easly in MP mode, all you have to do is jump on your opponints wing, and have them fly you around.

I didn't like Xavous at all. I worked my butt off in Silver level to earn it, and its just a stupid 1980's arcade game, so its a total fluck. I wouldn't play it after you earn it, unless you liked Xavous in the arcade as a kid.

Overall, a good game, but a little confusing if you haven't been with Starfox from game one. I would suggest renting it, and seeing what you think of it before paying for it. Its a deffinent must have for all you old Starfox junkies (myself inclided XDD). Ayama sayd ..... a resounding 8/10 for Assault.
