Spy Hunter
Review by Icelight
"A below average game that is a rental at best..."
Spy Hunter...just the name gives great memories of playing the original version in all it's glory. It was very addictive, challenging, and fun, and kept me coming back for more. Spy Hunter for the Gamecube (and alternately for the XBox/PS2) sadly, does not share these same characteristics...
Gameplay: 15/30
The gameplay revolves around you racing around a 'track', much like in the original Spy Hunter, except they are split up into levels, and each level has many mission objectives.
Every mission is basically a repeat of the last, just with different scenery, which makes for a dull and monotonous game. To make matters worse, you have only one go at the track to complete the missions, or your screwed and its time to start all over again, and try the track again. This type of gameplay may prolong the length of the game, but this is NOT how a game should be prolonged. It just isn't fun to play.
Your vehicle in the game can consist of three different types. When driving on the road, you have the normal car type vehicle, when you hit the water it transforms into a boat, and when you become heavily damaged your car 'shell' breaks away into a motorcycle of sorts. These transformations are, to say the least, interesting and neat to watch...for the first 3~5 times, you will quickly get bored of seeing the camera stop and swivel as your car turns into a boat....
Graphics: 14/20
The graphics are average to say the least, the car/boat/cycle models all look clean and fairly detailed. THe environments on the other hand, or not, they seem very PS1'ish and are a bit grainy and overall seem to be very unfinished..
Sound: 14/20
The sound is done well for this game, I don't have much to say in this topic as I never really care too much about the audio in games. Well, ok, I do, but not enough to recall the music tracks from this game to put into the review...
Control 9/10
I didn't really notice too much in regards to problems with the control, so not much to say in this section...
Replay Value: 2/20
Absolutely TERRIBLE replay value. Once you beat the game you will not want to go back. Add in a terrible multiplayer mode and you've got a recipe for a rental at best...
FINAL SCORE BEFORE TILT : 54/100
My final words/tilt on this game :
Spy Hunter is, to say it short, a terrible game not worth a purchase. If you really want to try it then rent it, but be warned, you will not have much fun, if any fun at all...
FINAL SCORE AFTER TILT : 44/100
