Gauntlet Dark Legacy
Review by DWBoy
"One of the best games for Gamcube, but not perfect"
This game combines Role-Playing elements with Hack 'n Slash, with a bit of puzzle mixed in. Well, why don't you take a look?
Graphics 8/10:
This was a tough category. On one hand, you have great player animations, and awesome magic and weapon animations. On the other hand, you have crappy wall, floor, etc animations. The latter a more negligible, so this gets an 8.
Gameplay 10/10:
This is Gauntlet's greatest achievement! The gameplay is absolutely awesome! The game runs perfectly, never lags up, and the tower is easy to move around. The camera is very rarely out of position, although the lack of a ''move camera'' setting is disappointing, it is still a great camera. Also, the generals in each level are tough, even though there is a system to beat them easily, as with the golems. The gargoyles, however, are pretty tough, and take a while to beat. The BOSSES of most worlds are very hard, and take a good effort to beat them.
Plot 7/10:
This is a good score for a hack 'n slash, really. Basically, the evil wizard Garm, using the Runestones' power, summoned the demon prince Skorne to do his bidding. Skorne, however, rose free of Garm, killing him and imprisoning his soul in the underworld. Now Sumner, Garm's more kind brother, has summoned you to gather the Runestones that were scattered by Skorne, defeat him, and save the day (duh!). Not much good after that, but better than most hack 'n slashes.
Sound 8/10:
The sound in this game is really good, consisting mostly of some awesome music, Sumner's booming voice, the crank of metal and wood when you hit switches, and the grunts of dying enemies. Not bad, but the grunts do get kind of repetitive.
Replay Value 8/10-10/10:
This category is flexible. If you have lots of friends, this has nearly infinite replay value. With no or few friends, the replay value slightly drops. With 8 characters, 8 alternates, tons of character appearance code (i.e. Wizard as Sumner, Knight as a ninja), tons of secrets to unlock, this will be a game you'll be playing for a long while.
Overall 9/10:
This is a very VERY good game, but the graphics and story need a little polishing. The replay value and gameplay are right on the dot, better than I have seen with any other game except Super Smash Brothers: Melee
Buy/Rent:
An awesome buy, rent it if you must, but buy it anyway. This game is one you absolutely CANNOT pass up.
