Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex
Review by CAHowell
"Finally, a playable version of TWoC"
If anyone remembers back in 1996, Crash first stared in his first game on the PSX. After the release, everyone was calling crash the mascot of Sony. Those were the good times, when Naughty Dog was still the Developer. Now let's go to 2001, where the sequel to Crash Bandicoot: Warped is released on the PS2, The Wrath of Cortex. At this point, Naughty Dog has left as the Developer and thats where Travelers Tails comes into play. Travelers Tails is known for picking up big game name development when the main developer is not involved (Sonic 3D Bash, Sonic R). The PS2 version was horrible, horrible load times and extremely bad enemy collision bugs were in the game, making it unplayable. The Xbox version was better, with greatly improved graphics and the load times and colision problems corrected. Now we're at the gamecube version. The gamecube version is basically a port of the PS2 version (graphic wise) with all the bugs corrected and the load times greatly tuned down, as well as a new GBA minigame. Is this version better? Read the review to find out
Graphics-6/10: The game looks horrible compared to the Xbox and PS2 versions. Blocky graphics and major slowdown on icy areas affect the score greatly. There are some attempts to make the game graphically better, such as clearer stages, but the problem to the blandness makes the game look like a late generation PSX game
Sound and Voice Acting-10/10: The music is great, very clear and catchy. Most of the key tracks is the boss music and main theme. The voice acting is on par with Crash 3, although done very well.
Control-6/10: Although the enemy collision bug is cleared up, the control responce is somewhat bad. The problem is that crash does not have good landing when he jumps, meaning most of your lost lives are either from platforms or enemies you are trying to avoid.
Buy or Rent?: At this point, the game should be selling at $20 US, so it would be a good time to buy it. If you have the PS2 or Xbox version and completed those, there is no need for the Gamecube version. If you want the best version, get the Xbox version. Only get the GCN version if it is all you have
Final-8.3/10: The game is done quite well on the gamecube, mainly fixing up all the bugs and load times the PS2 version had, but still falls short on the graphics. Although the minigame is fun, it does not unlock anything special. This version is worth the $20 you will spend on it.
