Sonic Adventure DX Director's Cut
Review by Big Bob
"When you turn off this game, you lose something inside."
I never played the original Sonic Adventure for Dreamcast, but I heard great things about it. Now that it's on GameCube, I can play it to my heart's contents. Sonic's games are great, and this game not only showcases one of his finest adventures, but also functions as another Mega Collection
Graphics 7/10
Easily the most disappointing part of SADX. When this game appeared on DreamCast, the graphics looked amazing. They have been beefed up from the original graphics, but still look bland compared to the standards of today. There are minor framerate problems, but it isn't really noticeable unless you are looking for it. Nevertheless, these are still great graphics. All the characters are uniquely designed; Sonic with his spikes, the way Tails', erm, tails spin while running, Knuckles' punching, etc. The levels don't look half-bad either.
Sound 10/10
The sound in SADX is great. All the characters have unique voices that fit their personalities well. Amy has that sweet little girl voice, Big with his dum-dum accent, and E-102 has the robot voice that you would expect. SADX also has one of the catchiest soundtracks I have ever heard. Every time one of the characters' themes play, I always sing along. The one minor complaint I have about sound is that during cinemas, the voices and mouth movements are done Godzilla-style (poor dubbing).
Gameplay
There are 6 different characters with different gameplay, so I will review each one separately.
Sonic- 10/10
Sonic's levels are high speed running levels, the best that you can find in any platformer, anywhere. Just get to the goal as fast as you can.
Tails- 10/10
Tails' levels are just like Sonic's, except that they are racing levels against the blue hedgehog. Tails can fly, also, so shortcuts through the levels are possible.
Knuckles- 8/10
In each of Knuckles' levels, you have to treasure hunt for pieces of the master emerald. These levels are fun, but they can wind up frustrating.
Amy- 9/10
Though nowhere near the speed of Sonic's levels, Amy's are still very fun. In each level, Amy is chased by a giant robot. During the level, there are different obstacles that you have to get past in different ways.
E-102 Gamma- 9/10
Gamma is a robot that works for Dr. Eggman. He can lock on to many targets at once, then fire energy blasts at them. Let's face it, who doesn't like just blowing stuff up?
Big- 7/10
Big the Cat has to fish for his frog in every level. Boring, but definitely better than real fishing.
Replayability 10/10
After you beat the game, there are still Game Gear games to unlock. Every 20 emblems, you unlock a new game from Sonic's library. These games are a nice break from the usual action, and some are just as great as current Sonic titles *coughTailsAdventurecough*. In short, you will be playing this game a long time.
I am a huge Sonic fan, so I bought this game immediately. I finish by saying that this game is highly recommendable and that everyone should play it.
