The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
Review by I am U
"Fairly Good Game -- Worth Buying"
Being a fan of the Lord of the Rings books and movies, I thought I would like to try this conclusion to the gaming series. Keep in mind that this review was written by a fan, though I try to keep it as straightforward and universal as possible.
Gameplay: 10/10
I'd have to give the creators a thumbs up for this. Controlling is, like most games should be, easy to learn but hard to master. You basically use four main buttons for fighting: Speed (The combo button), Fierce (For breaking shields), Physical (Kick, etc.), and Parry (Block and counter). In all consoles, these buttons are conveniently located next to each other, welcoming many newcomers with a tolerance for ''button mashing''.
The game itself (in normal mode) is challenging, but not so challenging as impossible. The game lends itself to replayability and practice in your skill. One problem is that there are only 13 levels (and secret ones).
Most of all, it is fun to play. If you've seen the movies, you should know about the huge battle sequences. You can re-play them yourselves in massive levels where you are all-out against an army (or two).
Story: 6.5/10
Do NOT play this game unless you have watched the corresponding movie (or the book, but the movie is more recommended). The game leaves out many integral pieces of the plot and often jumps 2-3 chapters in the book or 15-30 minutes in the movie. You will be left incomplete, confused, and your movie experience will be ruined from incomplete ending spoilers.
But otherwise it follows Tolkein's masterpiece, and if it weren't for the holes you'll have yourself a wonderful tale.
Graphics/Sound: 10/10
It's almost as good as it gets, but good enough to get a 10/10. They are so good that you feel immersed in the movie. It is as if you are inside the movie, watching how everything unfolds. The characters and NPCs are of a striking similarity to their real-life counterparts. Sound is straight from the soundtrack, which is a good start. The music sets the mood very well.
Play Time/Replayability: 9/10
Great replayability in raising your characters' levels. You can also unlock secret stages, as well as play with your friends. Cheats and Codes (built-in, at least) are only available after you beat the game.
If you ever have 10-30 minutes to kill or are just hanging out with your friends, this is a great choice for you to choose.
However, some levels are very long and if you choose to replay them you are pointlessly playing two or more levels at the same time, and you can't stop halfway or you loose your data.
Final Recommendation: 8.5/10
All in all this is a good game. It can be used as a good time killer, or just to challenge yourself or freshen up your skills at the controller. With good gameplay and great graphics, this game is worth its money.
