Evolution Worlds

Review by vector21

"A decent RPG"

First of all, I love RPGs, especially ever since I first played Final Fantasy 6 for Super Nintendo. So, seeing as my favorite games are RPGs, I decided to give Evolution Worlds a whirl after first getting my Gamecube. I had heard nothing about the game though, except that it was an okay RPG. So I gave the game a try, and found that it was pretty good, but nothing to get excited over. Basically what I'm saying is that it's a pretty decent RPG.

Gameplay 5/10

Evolution Worlds is a pretty fun game, for a few hours. After that, the only thing that drove me to continue was to see what happened at the end. That's it. It became pretty boring since it was so repetitive. I can sum the game up in one sentence: You run through dungeons looking for treasure and beating up monsters. There's also a story thrown in there, but it's not very good, and can even ruin part of the gameplay. The battles themselves were okay, it was just turn-based fighting. You could also see your enemies on the screen before you actually fight them. Some people like that, some people don't, I kind've do. Special moves and such depend on the person, but some of them are pretty cool. The game itself is really easy, except for the last boss. You can literally cruise through the game without dying once, but once you reach the finally boss, you will almost certainly lose the first couple of times you fight him. The control for the game is good, nothing really to say about it. Overall, the gameplay was okay.

Story 4/10

The story was pretty bad. Evolution Worlds is a combination of two games, and so the stories from both games are mashed together making it confusing and leaving many questions unanswered. The stories themselves are fairly original though, so that's a plus. Basically the story begins as Mag Launcher, a young boy, and a girl named Linear. Basically, Mag goes around in dungeons with his Cyframe (some sort of machine that helps the user out in some ways) and looks for valuable relics he can sell to the museum (or the Society, as it is known in the game). There are various other people that are introduced into the story, such as Mag's butler, Gre, and Mag's friend, Chain. As I said before, it's basically two stories mashed into one, so it's not really that good.

Graphics 8/10

Graphics were nice, but I don't really care too much how a game looks, as long as it plays well. Some of the special moves are done well, as were the monsters and towns and such. They could have been a little better, but not a whole lot.

Sound 7/10

The music in Evolution Worlds was decent, but it could get annoying after a while. Some music, like the boss music, were actually pretty well done, and I did not mind listening to them. Other tunes, such as the battle theme and dungeon theme can make a person go insane. Most weren't that bad, but a few were.

Replayability 8/10

After you beat the game once, you can play it again, only this time, you have a HUGE debt to the Society hanging over your head. It actually makes the game a little more fun. After that though, I don't see why you should play it again.

Overall 6/10

A decent RPG, not the best, but definitely not the worst. Buy, rent, or sell to an unsuspecting kid on the street after receiving it as a gift? Rent it first. Some people love this game, some people hate it, and others have no opinion at all. So try it out, you might like it.
