Die Hard: Vendetta
Review by bbears
"Horrible"
INTRO: The PS1 Die Hard games were some of the best for that system. So I immediately jumped to go out and by this game once I got my Gamecube. And... I am incredibly disappointed. This game looks more like an N64 game then Gamecube. Besides crummy graphics the gameplay is also very much lackluster. Practically no improvements have been made in that area. The story is not related to the movies, so that means it's pretty much nonexistent. Anyways on with the review.
GRAPHICS: This game shows a vast lack of resources concerning power used for the graphics engine. Honestly, if looked at a screenshot unknowingly I would think this is a N64 game. The low frame rate and high pixilation definitely bring this game down. There are no cutscenes to speak of. The environments although varied, lack detail and contrast. The game has a very bland appearance.
Score: 2
SOUND: The music is forgettable and the sound effects are lackluster. None of the voices from the movies or previous games are used and sound very monotone. McClain's remarks are not really funny either. In fact I can't remember one line from the game!
Score 1
CONTROL: The controls are solid for the most part. The camera cooperates with you most of the time too. But they are uninspired. The Gamecube itself, in my opinion is not very FPS friendly. Still the controls get the job done. Or not? But wait!.... I do have a complaint. AUTO AIM!!!!!! Who hell uses auto aim?! This takes all the fun out of any shooter. It can be turned off, but then will find the controls really are not that manageable.
Score 3
GAMEPLAY: The story and replay are pretty much negligible so I'm lump them together with gameplay. In case you haven't figured it out this is a FPS inspired by the popular Die Hard movies. Guns are what make an FPS right? Well I'm here to tell you they suck. The arsenal is very typical and bland in nature. The enemies all look alike and are extraordinarily stupid. The level designs lack much thought. The story barely gets you from point A to point B. On top of all that, the auto aim makes this game insanely easy. If you turn it off though, you will find moving and shooting will become a problem. The missions are all point A to point B with maybe an occasional hostage on the way. The PS1 games had more depth than this.
Score 3
BOTTOM LINE: This is one of the most poorly constructed games out there. Don't bother with a rental or puchase!
