Resident Evil Code: Veronica X

Review by stepalicious

"Worst of the GCN REs."

Resident Evil Code: Veronica X is a port of the original RE:CV for the Sega Dreamcast. It's one of the games from the well known and well liked zombie-hunting Resident Evil series, but Capcom really took a nosedive with this one.

Gameplay- 7/10
I'll give this game the benefit of the doubt here. If you've played some of the other REs, then you'll know how it works. You're walking around a big place with limited supplies killing all these monsters and stuff. It's the same with this game, and although it was done well with previous REs, it really came back to bite them in the ass with CV. The game is mildly fun to play. Not great, not completely terrible. There's only one difficulty setting, unlike the other REs, and it's pretty hard, almost to a point where it's annoying. There are some serious cheap ass enemies in this game. Apparently, everyone hates the controls for all the RE games before number 4, but I never had a problem with them so I guess the controls were ok... Kinda like a tank but it's alright. Oh and also they took like a big part of the first RE and stuck it in here, which was kinda cheap if you ask me. When I play a sequel or something, I dunno about you but I want to play something new.

Story- 7/10
I'm sure you know the basic RE story. Viral outbreak makes monsters, S.T.A.R.S. investigates, they get stuck, you look for a way out. That pretty much happens in this one too. Well you play as this girl, Claire Redfield, sister of Chris Redfield of the first RE, goes looking for her lost brother and she gets stuck at this prison/island place. It happens to be controlled by some branch of Umbrella, the company that started the whole viral mess, so it's infested with zombies and the like. She's trying to get off the island while looking for her brother. There's this other guy running the whole show there that was pretty cool, a real freak, but a cool freak, and he's trying to stop you from leaving and exposing the whole thing. Not all that great. Personally I wouldn't go through all that to find my siblings, I'd be like whatever, I get my own room now, but that's beside the point.

Graphics- 4/10
The graphics are a real eye sore. The lighting is terrible. The whole game is played in the dark even if it's not really supposed to be dark. You have to squint to see what you're doing. Not really anything has been changed from the DC version.

Sound- 6/10
I haven't really noticed the sound, so it must not be all that great. There are a couple good tunes though. Some of the sound effects are memorable, like the beating heart when you're about to open some doors. But whenever it does that it increases the time it takes to open the door which is a real pain in the ass, because there is a good number of doors that do that.

Playtime/Replayability- 5/10
There's one difficulty level. There's a minigame that you unlock after beating the game but it's long, drawn out, and boring, and you unlock like 1 thing for beating it with an impossible A rank with each of the 5 characters. That's it. There's not much else to do after you beat the game once.

This game is a real disappointment to the Resident Evil series, even if you're a die-hard fan like me. It's pretty hard to find now though, which may be for the best. Don't go out of your way to find it. Give it a rent if you really like RE, but you really shouldn't waste a lot of money for this game.
