""I'm going to enjoy this battle.""

Zoids, the first popular animal mech anime in the US since Voltron. Sadly, despite its popularity, it has been plagued by cheap attempts at video games. Fortunately, Zoids Battle Legends does not suffer like its relatives. And, on a system as desperate for games as Gamecube, Zoids shines.

Gameplay "I'm not holding anything back" : 8/10

This is the most important factor in all games, and it is where zoids shines. In story mode, you are assigned a generic zoid (Hellcat, Command Wolf, Molga). As you proceed in story mode, you will receive new zoids and parts to customize your zoids. However, Zoids Battle is where this game really shines. You choose your character and a partner from a list of pilots from all the Zoids series, then advance into a series of battles tournament style. Each round you'll face one or two pilots from the same series as your character. When you win, you'll be graded on your performance, and a higher grade equals more cash. The point is to select from a very large library of zoids (and even more can be unlocked) and build the ultimate zoid. Its no Armored Core as far as customizing, which is a good thing. Its a simple format, which lends itself really well to the games straightforward-yet-fun style of combat.

Graphics "I'm not holding anything back." : 8/10

The zoids look smooth and sleek. At times, it can be a bit choppy, especially when battling as the GIANT zoids or using the sniper rifle. Otherwise, classic movements such as Strike Laser Claw are executed seamlessly, and are pleasant to look at.

Sound "I'm like totally defeated" : 4/10

The voices flow smoothly for the most part. Some of the female voices are plain annoying (almost as bad as Megaman Legends 2). Also, only some of the characters voices are the same as the show. Since the each have only about 10 lines, it would have been nice to hear the original voices for characters such as Stoller.

Story "Waste of money..." : 5/10

Its a simple plot. I won't spoil it, but its rather mundane, and the characters are static. You'll know the casts' names and faces, but thats about it. Once you finish story mode both ways and unlock everything, you'll find yourself replaying the tournament mode again and again.

Replayability "Better luck next time" : 10/10

If you like zoids or mech games, you'll find yourself playing this game over and over again. Especially if you have a friend who likes it to, as the 2-player battles let you pit your customized Zoids against each other for mass carnage.

Rent/Buy "What? I can't loose" : Rent
I'd recommend renting this game first. Then try out a full tournament in Zoids Battle mode. If that doesn't spark interest, then its not meant for you. However, its likely that if you own a gamecube and liked Zoids or Armored Core at all, this will be one of the best titles you can have for it, along with Smash Bros. Melee and Tales Of Symphonia.

Overall "You are the Best Zoid" : 8/10

So, stop reading this and go out and get it. And start off with a raptor or sniper, they rock.
