Welcome to the Phantasy Star IV walkthrough and strategy guide.

Why, you may ask, write a walkthrough for a game that was released ten
years ago? Well, the answer is quite simple. This was the first console-
based RPG I ever played, and I loved every minute of it. After playing the
other games in the series, I came to the conclusion that The End of The
Millennium is the best of them all, and worthy of my time and effort to
fully flesh it out. This guide contains no reference, apart from the one
above, to any of the other Phantasy Star games. Although Phantasy Star IV
does refer to many elements from previous games (it is a sequel after all),
this guide is not written for those games, and any links are ignored. I
may, in the future, compose guides for the earlier games in the series, but
that remains to be seen.

This guide contains everything you will need to make your way through the
game, including all of the side areas. The first part of the guide contains
general playing information, including explanations of the controls, layout
and mechanics of the game, and a section to explains the terms used. After
this is the full walkthrough. I have split the walkthrough into acts, each
covering the main stories of the game, and these are split into chapters
that outline each separate mission. The idea of this is to make finding a
specific area that little bit easier. Finally, there are a number of
sections that go into great detail on the characters, abilities, items,
enemies, places and all the other aspects of the game. This reference area
is about as exhaustive as it can be, and will hopefully answer any specific
question you may have about the game. There is no FAQ section in this guide
at the moment, which is hardly surprising as noone has asked me anything.

As far as its completion is concerned, this guide is almost there. There is
only one thing I have yet to finish, and that is the Character Statistics
section. Once this is completed, I will update this guide. Even without the
last few statistics (which you don't really need anyway), this is probably
the best guide you will find for this game anywhere. If you disagree, and
feel that there is anything that could be improved, please let me know. I
will gladly do whatever is required to make this guide flawless, and credit
those that aid me in the task.

Ready? Then let's begin!

This section is a little sparse at the moment, but I hope that any mistakes
or omissions I have made will be brought to my attention so that I can make
any required adjustments and fill this list up a bit.

August 2004 - v1.00 - Added the Dungeons chapter to the Geography
section, and included elemental affinities for
all the weapons and detailed enemy descriptions
Also revamped the entire layout, making it much
                           clearer and easier to follow

August 2004 - v0.99b - Update to the first version, including detailed
elemental and status affinities of enemies and
damage scales of Techniques and Skills

August 2004 - v0.99 - The first version, and almost complete

All travelling, exploration and conversation takes place in the field.
There are three different field types - outside, town and dungeon. These
field types are explained below:

Outside - All travel between towns and dungeons takes place here. You can't
examine things when outside, but you can use vehicles once you
have acquired them. Random battles will initiate here. You may
          save the game anywhere outside.

Town - Located around the world are towns and villages. They are safe
havens from the monsters outside, and also provide opportunity
to rest and shop. Useful information can often be found in towns,
mainly by speaking to its inhabitants. There may also be items to
find. Random battles will not take place in towns. You may save
          the game in towns.

Dungeon - Most of the action in the game takes place in dungeons. This is
just a general term - dungeons can be caves, towers, castles, or
any other enclosed space inhabited by monsters. Most dungeons
contain a specific objective, and this is occasionally guarded by
a boss (sometimes more than one) - usually the most powerful
creature(s) in that dungeon. Random battles will initiate here.
You may not save the game in a dungeon.

3.2. Battle CBTTL

There are two types of battle in the game - on foot or in a vehicle. The
way the battle is run depends on which type of battle it is. The two types
are explained below:

***************************************************************************
3.2.1. On Foot CONFT
***************************************************************************

Most battles take place while you are walking. Nearly all battles occur
randomly, while walking around outside or in a dungeon. There are also boss
battles, that occur when a specific location is reached. These are
unavoidable and inescapable. When combat begins, the screen will split
horizontally and combat music will begin.
Along the bottom of the screen will be the characters in your party,
facing your enemy near the middle of the screen. Along the top will be the
name(s) of the opponent(s), and there will be a small menu on the left of
the screen. This is where you choose your actions for the following round
of combat. The options are described below:

COMD - This allows you to select the individual actions of each member of
your party. The first character in the marching order will be shown
alongside a pictoral menu of up to five options. These represent the
different actions the character may take, and are described below:

Attack - Use equipped weapon to hit one or all enemies.
(Sword) You must select a target if necessary.

Technique - Choose a technique from the list. Those marked
(Blue sparkles) in red are unavailable due to lack of TP.
You must select a target if necessary.

Skill - Choose a skill from the list. Those marked in
(Red light) red have been exhausted, and cannot be used.
You must select a target if necessary.

Item - Choose an item from the list. Those marked in
(Chest) red have already been selected by someone else.
You must select a target if necessary.

Defend - Take a defensive stance, to reduce damage from
(Shield) attacks. Only uasble on self.

MACR - Another menu will open listing the letters A-H. These represent
battle macros, that can be set in the Party Menu. The purpose of
macros is to allow you to program in commands for each character
beforehand, so that you don't have to select them individually
from the COMD option. See the MACRO section in the Party Menu for
       more details on macros.

RUN - Discretion is the better part of valour. If all seems lost, or if
you feel you are facing an opponent that is beyond your power to
defeat, this option is here to allow the party to attempt escape.
One of two things will happen if you select RUN. Either a message
will say '[First character in marching order] retreated!', and you
will return to the field (with no reward for any monsters you had
defeated). Otherwise, a message will say 'Cannot escape!', and your
enemy will get a free attack against you. Nearly all boss battles
can never be left, so don't even try.

After you have chosen your battle strategy, the round of combat will take
place, with each participant acting in an order based on their Agility
and an element of randomness. If a macro has been chosen, the characters
will act in the order of the macro, with the enemies acting accordingly.
You may find that enemies act earlier when using macros, as slower
characters may be programmed to act sooner in the round.
The battle continues until the party escapes or one side defeats the
other. If all of the enemies are defeated, the battle is won, and the
party will be awarded experience points and mesetas (and perhaps an item).
If all of the characters are reduced to 0 HP or are Paralyzed, the battle
is lost and the game is over. You can reload again from a saved game.

***************************************************************************
3.2.2. In a Vehicle CINVC
***************************************************************************

Even while travelling in a vehicle you may encounter hostility. Only random
battles begin while in a vehicle, as they only ever take place when you are
outside. Battles in vehicles are quite different from those on foot. Combat
starts the same way, by the screen splitting and (different) combat music
beginning. You will then see the battlefield from the view of the vehicle,
with the dashboard at the bottom of the screen. The menu on the left also
has different options, and these are described below:

ATTAC - Fire at an enemy with the vehicle's standard weapon. You must
select a target if more than one.

OPTIN - Choose a special weapon from the list. Those marked in red have
been exhausted, and cannot be used.

RUN - Exactly the same as on foot.

The combat then takes place in pretty much the same way as it does on foot,
except that damage inflicted by enemies drops the vehicle's SP, not the
characters' HP. If the vehicle's SP drops to 0, the battle is lost and the
game is over. All lost SP is restored at the end of battle.

ITEM - Opens the item list. From here you can select items to be used,
        examined or discarded.

TECH - Opens another small menu of the characters. Select one and a list
of that character's usable Techniques will appear. From here you
can use curative Techniques and travel Techinques.

SKILL - Opens another small menu of the characters. Select one and a list
of that character's usable Skills will appear. From here you can
        use curative Skills.

set of windows will open. At the top left are the character's
battle statistics, below this is a list of their current equipment,
and on the right is a list of items that may be equipped to the
charcter. From here you can change the character's equipment. The
numbers on the left display how an item being equipped will affect

can set their marching order by selecting the characters
in your preferred sequence. It is worth noting that those
characters at the top of the list are more likely to be
attacked in battle than those at the bottom.

TALK - This starts a small dialogue between the members of your party,
allowing you to recap on the current situation and to give you
clues as to where to go next.

Opens a list consisting of the letters A to H. These represent the
eight Macros that may be set. Macros are sets of actions that can
be pre-programmed for use in battle. By defaul, the Macro A is in
white, and this means that it has been assigned and that it is
usable. Initially, Macro A is set to Attack for all characters, and
it is probably best to leave it that way.
You can set a Macro by selecting one marked in red (unset). A list
of characters appears. Select the first character you want to
perform an action, and then a menu, similar to the battle command
menu, appears. Choose an action as you would in battle, and then
repeat the process for each character to create the Macro. This
Macro will then be marked in white.
Selecting a Macro that is already assigned will allow you to delete
a Macro. Use this if the Macro involves characters not in your
party or if you need more space.
If a Macro is marked in yellow it means that the Macro will not be
able to be carried out as specified. This occurs when a character
is set to perform an action that they are unable to perform. In
this case a Macro will still be run as instructed, but characters
marked in red on the battle Macro screen will do nothing.

The Phantasy Star IV game uses a lot of common RPG terminology, and if you
are familiar with RPGs you should pick up the terms used quite quickly.
For those of you that aren't, I will now explain all of the different terms
and abbreviations you are likely to see in the game:

Level - Each playable character in the game has a Level, ranging from
1 to 99. A character's Level determines their statistics: HP,
TP, Strength, Mental, Agility and Dexterity. Level also
determines the Techniques and Skills a character has learned,
and the stock of Skills they have available. Level is based on
the total EXP that the character has acquired.

EXP - An abbreviation for Experience Points, EXP is awarded after
defeating enemies. Each enemy has a particular EXP value, and
this value is distributed equally to each party member that
defeats it. The total EXP a character has earned determines
             the character's Level.

HP - An abbreviation for Hit Points, HP is the measure of the
endurance of any living thing in the game. Each character and
enemy has a maximum HP value, and damage caused by physical
and magical means can lower this value. When a character drops
to 0 HP they are flatlined, the character's text turns red, a
line is shown in the action box, and they can't do anything
until revived. If every party members' HP falls to 0 the game
is over. If an enemy's HP reaches 0 they are destroyed.
However, HP can be restored by using certain items, Techniques
and Skills, resting at an Inn or using a Regen Platform, but
it can never exceed the maximum HP value. The maximum HP value
of a character is based on who they are and what Level they
             have attained.

TP - An abbreviation for Technique Points, TP represents a being's
mental energy. Most characters have a TP value, and the use of
Techniques will reduce this value by the Technique's TP Cost.
TP can be restored by using Raja's ATARAXIA Skill, resting at
an Inn or using a Regen Platform, and, like HP, can never
exceed a character's maximum TP value. The maximum TP value of
a character is based on who they are and what Level they have
             attained.

Strength - Shortened to Strngth in the game, Strength is the measure of a
character's physical power. It is used as the base value for a
character's Attack Power. A character's Strength score is
based on who they are and what Level they have attained.

Mental - This represents a character's mental power. It affects the
potency of certain Techniques and Skills. A higher MTL PWR
increases the effects of curative and offensive abilities used
by the character, and reduces the effect of enemies' offensive
abilities used against them. A character's Mental score is
based on who they are and what Level they have attained.

Agility - This is the measure of a character's speed and initiative. It
is used in battle to decide who fast a character acts in a
round of combat. The higher a character's Agility, the sooner
they will act in the round. It is also used as the base value
             for a character's Defence Power. A character's Agility score
is based on who they are and what Level they have attained.

Dexterity - Shortened to Dextrty in the game, Dexterity represents a
character's talent at manoeuvring. It is used in battle to
determine the chance of a character hitting an enemy and the
chance of a character avoiding an enemy attack. It is also
used to determine the likelihood of a critical attack. A
character's Dexterity is based on who they are and what Level
             they have attained.

ATK PWR - An abbreviation for Attack Power, ATK PWR (or ATK) determines
how much damage a character deals with physical attacks. The
greater a character's ATK, the more damage they will inflict.
A character's ATK is the sum of their Strength and the ATK
             bonuses of their equipment.

DFS PWR - An abbreviation for Defence Power, DFS PWR (or DFS) determines
how much damage a character takes from physical attacks. The
greater a character's DFS, the less damage they will receive.
A character's DFS is the sum of their Agility and the DFS
             bonuses of their equipment.

Technique - Sometimes abbreviated to Tech, a Technique is one of the two
types of character ability in the game. There are lots of
different Techniques, and most of the characters will be able
to learn a number of these during the game. Less powerful
Techniques are usually learned at lower Levels, and the most
powerful Techniques will be learned at higher Levels. Every
Technique has a specific TP Cost, which is the amount of TP a
character must spend in order to use the Technique. If a
character does not have the required TP, they won't be able to
use the Technique. Some enemies may also have Techniques.

Skill - These are the second of the two types of ability in the game.
Unlike Techniques, Skills are more character-specific, most of
them only being learned by one character. The majority of
Skills are learned in the same manner as Techniques, by a
character attaining a certain Level, although some of the
androids' Skills have to be found. Each Skill has a particular
stock, which increases when characters increase in Level, and
using a Skill reduces this number by 1. If a character has 0
stock of a Skill, they will be unable to use that Skill. All
Skills can be restored to their maximum stock value by resting
at an Inn or using a Regen Platform. Many enemies may have
             their own Skills.

SP - This is an abbreviation for Shield Power. Each of the vehicles
in the game has a fixed maximum SP value, and it is equivalent
to HP when involved in a vehicle combat. Damage from enemies
reduces SP, and if a vehicle's SP reaches 0 the vehicle is
destroyed and the game is over. SP is immediately restored to
its maximum value once the battle is over.

Enemy - Throughout the game, the party will have to face a great many
enemies. These are hostile biomonsters, machines, darkspawn
and evil beings that engage the party in combat with the sole
aim of killing them. Each type of enemy has its own specific
statistics, similar to those of characters, and may also have
its own Techniques and/or Skills. Enemies have individual EXP
and Meseta values, and these are awarded to the party once the
battle is over. They may also carry items that will be dropped
after battle. Most enemy encounters occur randomly while
outside or in a dungeon, although a few are triggered by the
             party reaching a specific location.

Boss - Some dungeons have one or more bosses, which are generally the
most powerful of the enemies in the dungeon and are most often
found just before the area's goal (or sometimes are, in fact,
the area's goal). They are usually quite difficult and use up
a large portion of the characters' abilities, and they are
nearly always unique. Bosses, like all other enemies, have
their own statistics, EXP and Meseta awards, but they never
drop items. The party cannot escape from the vast majority of
boss battles. All encounters with bosses are triggered by the
             party reaching a specific location.

Meseta - Often abbreviated to MST, the Meseta is the unit of currency
used in all of the Algo star system, and is used to purchase
items from stores and to stay at Inns. They can be gained in a
variety of ways, including defeating enemies, procuring from
chests, earning from missions, and selling items in stores.

Elements - There are eight different elements in the game, each causing
different amounts of damage to different beings, based on
their affinity to them (weakness, resistance or immunity).
The eight elements are as follows:

             Fire,Water,Energy,Force,Gravity,Electric,Radiation,Light

In certain descriptions Gravity may be shortened to Grav,
Electric may be shortened to Elec, and Radiation to Rad.

Poison - One of the three status effects in the game, Poison can be
inflicted on organic characters by certain enemies. It enters
the character's blood stream and immediately causes them to
become feverish. Poison is indicated by the character's text
being displayed in yellow. During battle, a Poisoned character
suffers no ill effects. On the field, however, a Poisoned
character loses 1 HP for every four steps they take, indicated
by the screen flashing red. This continues until the Poison
is removed or the character drops to 0 HP. Note that damage
from Poison will not occur in towns or villages. Poison can be
removed by using an ANTIDOTE or SOL-DEW, the ANTI or REGEN
Technique, resting at an Inn or using a Regen Platform.

Paralysis - One of the three status effects in the game, Paralysis can be
inflicted on organic beings by certain enemies and characters.
It affects the nervous system, causing the being inflicted to
be incapable of moving. Paralysis is indicated by the
character's text being displayed in blue. During battle, a
Paralysed being will be unable to perform any action at all.
On the field, this effect is the same, indicated by the fact
that the character does not walk, although the Paralysis will
fade off after travelling a short distance. If all characters
are Paralysed in battle, the game is over. Paralysis can be
removed by using a CURE-PARAL or SOL-DEW, the RIMPA or REGEN
Technique, walking a certain distance, resting at an Inn or
             using a Regen Platform.

Sleep - One of the three status effects in the game, Sleep can be
inflicted on organic beings by certain enemies. It causes the
metabolism of a being to drop so harshly that a state of
unconsciousness ensues. Sleep is indicated by the character's
text being displayed in green. During battle, a Sleeping
character will be unable to take any action. A character
will normally wake up after a couple of rounds, or after the
battle is over. Sleep can be removed by using a SOL-DEW, the
AROWS or REGEN Technique, waiting a short while, or finishing
             the battle.

Weakness - Some enemies have particular weaknesses to certain forms of
damage, and will lose more HP from attacks that they are weak
against. An enemy's level of weakness may vary, and can
sometimes double an attack's damage. Knowing an enemy's
weakness is a valuable tool in defeating them quickly.
In the guide, Weakness is often abbreviated to Weak.

Resistance - Some enemies have particular resistances to certain forms of
damage, and will lose less HP from attacks that they resist.
An enemy's level of resistance may vary, and can sometimes
lower an attack's damage to 1 HP. Knowing an enemy's
resistances helps avoid choosing poor actions.
In the guide, Resistance is often abbreviated to Res.

Immunity - Some enemies have particular immunities to certain forms of
damage, and will only take 1 HP of damage from such attacks.
Knowing an enemy's immunities prevents wasting actions.
In the guide, Immunity is often abbreviated to Imm.

Critical - A critical attack can be inflicted by characters and enemies,
and the chance of landing one is determined by the attacker's
and the defender's Dexterity. They are random, and deal around
1.5 times as much damage as a regular attack. Very useful if
scored by a character, but possibly devastating if landed by
an enemy, critical attacks can sometimes tip the balance of
             combat in either side's favour.

Select START from the Title Menu to begin a new game. The screen goes blank
and an anonymous voice calls to Chaz, telling him to wake up. He does, and
the screen brightens into a room. Chaz gets out of bed, and heads out to
the hallway to meet Alys. She tells him about putting his heart into his
first job for the Hunters' Guild, as he is no longer a trainee anymore.
They then head out of the house, and Chaz asks where they are going. Alys
replies that their destination is Motavia Academy in Piata, but she knows
no more than that. They then leave the town, and Chaz expresses his wish
to tour the academy. Alys doesn't share his interest, and they promptly
set off to Piata, and off the screen. A short narration begins, over a
background of Chaz and Alys standing on a precipice overlooking Piata.

 "AW 2284. Monster attacks

But as the attacks become ever

separated from Alys. You must find her. Control now passes to you. Alys is
to your left, and there are another three people you can talk to in the
rooms nearby. They speak a little of monsters in the basement and the
principal's commission, but nothing important, so go over to Alys. She will
tell you off for getting lost, and then mention going to the principal.

Speaking to people will yield a lot of information about the current
situation, although none of it is essential. You'll generally find out a
bit more about the monster threat, a village called Mile, problems with
the planet, and general information about the history of the Algo system.
If you try to enter the academy basement (the middle door on the ground
floor) you will be stopped by a student walking back and forth and talking
to himself, so just head to the principal's office behind the middle door
on the top floor. Address the principal to begin a cut-scene.

The principal explains that the academy basement has been taken over by
monsters, and that he wishes Chaz and Alys to destroy them. When asked how
the monsters got into the town in the first place, the principal takes on
a different tone, shouting that he doesn't know and that they should just
get on with it.

When they leave, Alys tells Chaz that she thinks the prinipal was acting
very suspiciously, although Chaz feels he may just be afraid of the
monsters. Make your way downstairs, then through the door behind the
statue to find yourself at the entrance to the basement. Speak to the
student guarding the stairs to begin another cut-scene.

The student, whose name is Hahn, requests that he goes with you,
explaining that his mentor, Professor Holt, went missing while researching
a place called Birth Valley. He also says that after this event occured,
the principal barred anyone from entering Birth Valley, and then the
monster scare began. He feels there is a connection, and wants to find the
truth, but was waiting for Chaz and Alys to arrive as he didn't want to go
into the basement alone. Alys lets him tag along for 100 Mesetas.

To defeat the Igglanova quickly, have Alys use her VORTEX skill and Chaz
and Hahn attack in the first round. The Igglanova will spawn a Xanafalgue
every round until there are two on the screen, at which point it will
attack, so make sure that Chaz attacks the Xanafalgue each round and keep
having Alys use VORTEX. Hahn should be attacking whatever necessary
(usually Igglanova) or using RES if anyone needs healing (which shouldn't
happen). Igglanova should go down in four or five rounds.

Alternatively, to gain a lot of experience quite quickly at this stage of
the game, have Alys defend every round and Chaz and Hahn hack away at
Xanafalgues. Let Hahn use RES when anyone gets low on HP, and just keep
going until you get fed up, at which point use VORTEX to finish off the
Igglanova. How long you do this, if at all, is up to you.

Once the battle is over, Alys will ask Hahn why all the capsules are
there, and he will state that he doesn't know. They decide to see the
principal, so return up the stairs and make your way out of the basement.
Go back up to the top floor of the academy and visit the principal's room.
Speak to the principal to begin another cut-scene.

Alys will ask him why all the capsules are there, and after a little
persuasion he tells her. Apparently, the new breed of monster that had
emerged in the area originated from Birth Valley, so Professor Holt went
to investigate. The principal tells Alys that Holt had found evidence of
an ancient and advanced civilization, and he brought back the breeding
capsules to be studied before setting out to Birth Valley again. But this
time he didn't return. Hahn asks why the principal didn't send a rescue
team, so the principal replies that he was visited by a man who called
himself Zio.

A flashback then ensues, where you see Zio warning the prinicipal not to
send anyone else to Birth Valley, on pain of being turned into stone. Hahn
then resolves to go to Birth Valley, and Alys kindly informs him that it's
egg-laying season for sand worms. She agrees to accompany him for a
further 300 Mesetas. Hahn then says that Birth Valley is to the northeast.

Stock up on any more MONOMATEs you require and pick up a few ANTIDOTEs,
then rest at the Inn if you need to before speaking to the people around
the village. They will talk to you about a strange new religion that has
started, the wizard Zio, the Sand Worm Ranch (see the man in the southwest
corner for more information), and that Birth Valley can be found near
Zema, to the northeast. Once you are done here, leave the village.

Continue northeast between the mountains, until you see the village of
Zema just south of a mountain range. There is a broken bridge to the
northwest of Zema, but you can't do anything with this at the moment.
Instead, continue wandering around the area near Zema until both Chaz and
Hahn are at least Level 5. You will find this helps later. If you get low
on HP, return to Mile to refresh yourself. When you are ready, save and
enter Zema.

Zema has no amenities at the moment. Nearly all of its residents have been
turned into stone. The only two inhabitants who were not are hiding in the
basement of the southwest house. It seems that Zio has been at work here.
Make your way to the north end of town, and enter the cave.

Head up and then turn right at the first junction. Follow this path to the
end and collect the CRBNSHIELD. Don't bother equipping it, though. Return
to the junction and then head up, ignoring the passage on your right to
pick up the MONOMATE at the end. Now go back and take the right passage.
Continue along this path, then turn up then left and go downstairs.

Go up, and take the right passage at the junction. Go up at the turning and
collect the CRBN-SUIT. Equip it to Hahn, as he has the lowest DFS at the
moment. Go down then all the way to the left, then turn up at the end. Go
past the statues and address the stone man blocking the door at the end.
This is Professor Holt, and he will begin a cut-scene.

Hahn seems shocked by the Professor's petrification, and asks if there is
any way to undo what has been done. Alys then speaks of a medicine called
Alshline, that is supposed to turn stone to flesh. She informs them that it
used to be available at the Motavian town of Molcum, far to the south.
Hahn then suggests they set off, and Alys is nice enough to set the price
at 500 Mesetas. Hahn is not too pleased.

You will now be back outside the cave in Zema. There is nothing else to be
done here, so leave the town.

Head a little south, then southwest along the coast before heading directly
south between the mountains. You should see the village of Molcum ahead.
However, don't enter it just yet. Spend some time fighting monsters in this
area, returning to Mile when you need to rest. Try to get Chaz and Hahn up
to Level 6, and perhaps get Alys to Level 8. When you are ready, enter.

Molcum is in ruins, all of the buildings having been burnt down. There seem
to be no people about either. Head north through the village until you see
a man dressed in white facing away from you. Approach and speak to him to
begin a cut-scene.

Alys seems to know the man, and calls him Rune. He greets her, and then he
and Chaz have a little squabble. Alys breaks it up and asks what happened,
and Rune replies that Zio burned the village down. It seems he's been up to
a lot recently. Hahn then cuts in by asking how they are going to get the
Alshline, and Rune suggests they go to Tonoe. He then gives directions that
take the party past a village called Krup, although Hahn seems strangely
averse to going into this particular place. Rune then invites himself to
join the group, but Chaz doesn't seem to happy with this. He also gets fed
up with Rune calling him Shorty, but before he can say what his name is,
Rune says that he had already said his name was Chaz (although he didn't).
They then decide to leave.

Rune joins the party (Level 17)
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Rune will be a great asset to the group, being far more powerful than all
of the other characters. He will also give you access to some powerful
spells. As he is much tougher than everyone else at the moment, put Rune at
the front of the party, followed by Alys, Chaz and then Hahn. Also, swap
Rune's CIRCLET and Hahn's LTHR-BAND, as Hahn will benefit more from the
better head protection.

Head through the door to the left of the Armour Store, and you'll find
yourself in Hahn's parents' house. Apparently, his father owns the store,
and he is annoyed with his son because Hahn wastes his time studying when
he should be helping with the family business. Now you see why Hahn wanted
to avoid this place.

Now go to the building at the north side of town. Enter, and you will find
yourself in a classroom. Hahn races over to the front and embraces the
teacher. This is Saya, and it turns out that she is Hahn's fiancee. A
conversation ensues between everyone, after which you may leave.
There is little else to do here, so buy any MONOMATEs and ANTIDOTEs you
feel are necessary (and an ESCAPIPE may come in handy too), then rest at
the Inn. When you are ready, leave Krup.

fingers and blasts to rocks to pieces. Rune calls this technique 'magic'.
Save your game, then enter.

Head up and then left, and take the second turning up. The first turning
just leads to a dead end. Go through the door, and keep going up until you
reach a junction, where you should turn right. Go up at the turning, then
through the door. Head to the top end of the room, round the pool, and
pick up 300 MST before returning to the junction.

Continue left until the end, then go up through the door. Now, simply walk

bother increasing your levels just yet. You'll see why in a moment.

Back outside, head up to the village of Tonoe.

Go to the Inn and refresh yourself, then unequip Rune completely. He won't
be needing his things for a while. Head to the east side of town, then
enter a hut north of the stalls. Speak to the old Motavian sitting on the
chair in the middle. Different music will begin and he will introduce
himself as Grandfather Dorin. He will ask if you wish to know the secret of
refining titanium. Reply that you don't. Also reply 'no' to whether you
wish to know why the path to the village is blocked by a rock. However,
when Grandfather Dorin asks if you wish to know Alys Brangwin's chest
measurements, say 'yes'. Alys will then punch Dorin, and threatens to punch
him again when he sees Rune and asks for his help. A cut-scene then begins.

Rune begins by requesting an item he had left there and asking Dorin about
Alshline. Dorin replies that they can take whatever they need, and that
it's in the warehouse basement out back. They're about to leave when Dorin
warns them it might be a tad risky, so he asks Gryz to accompany them. He
agrees, and then Rune bids farewell, telling Chaz not to get any silly
ideas about taking on Zio by himself. This surprises the group, as the idea
of Chaz fighting Zio hadn't even been brought up. Alys then thanks Rune,
and he leaves.

Rune leaves the party

Gryz joins the party (Level 6)
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Gryz is very useful in gritty combat, being a strong character with very
damaging weapons. He has more HP than any of the other characters at the
moment, so place him at the front of the party, followed by Alys, then
Chaz and then Hahn.

Go to the stalls at the southeast of town. The three stores are to be found
in these locations (the other stalls will have nothing to sell):

                          ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

As you make your way around the stores, you should buy a TITN-SWORD, two
TITNSLASHRs. two TITNDAGGERs, a TITN-HELM and two TITN-MAIL. It is unlikely
you will be able to afford all these at the moment, as they come to a total
of 4570 Mesetas. Even with selling the STEL-SWORD, two HUNT-KNIVES, two
SLASHERs, CRBN-HELM, LTHR-BAND, two CRBN-SUITs and WHITEMANTL (which you
should do), you'll still need another 3265 Mesetas to buy all this
equipment. If you can't afford it yet, buy the remaining equipment later.
Don't sell the WOOD-CANE, as this weapon can be used in combat as the RES
spell, which saves TP.

Before heading onto the next chapter, go back to Valley Maze and get Chaz,
Hahn and Gryz up to Level 8 or even Level 9, and take Alys up to around
Level 9 ot 10. Once you are done, return to Tonoe and buy whatever
equipment you couldn't buy before, then head past Grandfather Dorin's hut
and around to the west until you find another hut. Enter here, then
examine the trapdoor at the top. Gryz will open the door, after which you
should head on into the basement.

Head up a little, then right through the gap in the wall. Then, go all the
way up to the top of the room and pick up 100 MST. Return back to the
stairs then take the left opening and follow this all the way to the top to
collect the MONOMATE from the left corner. Go back to the entrance and then
follow the central passage all the way to the top and go down the stairs.

Head left then turn down, and take the first junction to the right. Head
into the first room along the bottom wall and pick up 500 MST from the
lower-right corner. Leave the room, then continue to the right and enter
the next room along the bottom wall. In here, take the 300 MST near the
left wall. Exit the room and go all the way left back to the first passage.
Go down and then right, and take the stairs at the end.

Go left at the junction, then turn up at the corner. Ignore the door to the
first room and the passage to the right, and go into the room that follows.
Pick up the ANTIDOTE from the lower-right corner then go back left, down,
and right along the passage you skipped just now. At the next junction,
go up a little, then right into the room. Retrieve the TITN-CROWN from
here, then equip it to Alys immediately. Go back to the entrance to this
room, then go all the way down to the first junction near the stairs. Head
right here, until you find the next staircase going down. Take it.

Go up then left, and you will see a door against the top wall. This door is
sealed, so continue left into a stone tunnel. Follow the tunnel left, up,
right, and then down into the room behind the sealed door. There are three
chests here. The top-right one is open, so open the one beneath it to
obtain an ESCAPIPE. Finally, open the left-most chest to acquire the
ALSHLINE and begin a short cut-scene.

Alys takes the medicine, after which Gryz requests joining the group, as it
turns out that his father and mother were killed by Zio when his village
was burned down. Chaz points out that they are not necessarily going after
Zio, to which Gryz brings up what Rune said earlier. Either way, Gryz wants
to go, as he is beginning to get bored of staying in Tonoe. Alys agrees,
and Hahn impatiently suggests they leave.

You have two options now - you can use the ESCAPIPE you just collected (or
HINAS if Chaz has learnt it) to leave the basement, or you can make your
way back to Tonoe on foot. Either way, try to get everyone up to at least
Level 9 if they are not already there.

You now need to go back to Zema. You can either use a TELEPIPE or Chaz's
RYUKA Technique to get there, or you can walk back to gain some more
experience. If you intend to walk, make sure you rest at the Inn before
you leave. Once you are at Zema, walk in to begin a lengthy cut-scene.

The party will use the Alshline to restore the residents of Zema and the
research team. Professor Holt is glad to see Hahn, although he has no
recollection of what has happened. He instructs Hahn to go back to the
academy and tell them what has happened, and tells him that he's off to
explore further into Birth Valley.

With this problem over with, the group decide to take it easy for the rest
of the day. Hahn decides to return to Piata, and Gryz resolves to go after
Zio (alone, if he has to). Alys suggests that she and Chaz go back to the
Hunters' Guild in Aiedo, when suddenly there is a scream.

The group rush over to the entrance to Birth Valley to find an Igglanova
blocking their path. You are automatically flung into battle (with fully
restored HP and TP).

The Igglanova is extremely easy this time. The recommended levels given
above are only there because this should be the state of play when you
fight. Don't waste Techniques or Skills. Just have everyone attack the
Igglanova. When it spawns Xanafalgues, Alys will easily destroy them with
her TITNSLASHRs. This battle will be over in a couple of rounds.

The villagers think it is a curse, and Chaz becomes curious about what is
further inside. Hahn realises the Professor is inside, and Alys is kind
enough to join him for the fair price of 1000 Mesetas. It seems Hahn won't
be getting married for a while.

Rest at the Inn if you need to (unlikely), then go shopping. Buy just a

TITN-AXE and the CRBN-SUIT. Save your game, and go into Birth Valley.

Make your way through Birth Valley as before, going up and then taking the
second right. Go right until the end, then go up then left and down the
stairs. Head up and then left, and then up past some injured people and

Go up through the first short corridor. A little way along the next
passage, a red light will flash. Chaz and Hahn are terrified, but Alys
calms them down. Walk over to the panel on the wall and have a look.

"Sterilization Treatment Completed.
Please follow the line on the floor."

Head through the door on the right, and head up through passage beyond.
Go down in the elevator, then follow the passage down to the central
column, where you should turn right. Follow the passage round upwards and
collect the CURE-PARAL from the end. Head back to the column and then go
down to the junction. Read the panel on the left.

"Elevator W3 To the West Section"

Take the elevator nearby down to the West Section. Go down the corridor,
then all the way to the left, then head up. Ignore the two open chests to
the left, and obtain the GRPT-CROWN from the next alcove on the left. Give
this to Alys, then read the panel a little further along the passage if
you wish.

"West Section Unauthorized Entry Prohibited Beyond This Point"

This is very true, as the next passage is blocked by a cave-in, so return
back down, right, and then up back to the elevator. Take it to the floor
above, then head right and read the panel on the opposite wall.

"Elevator E3 To the Central Block"

Take this elevator down, then follow the passage right, up, then left. Go
all the way up the corridor between the capsules until you reach a
junction. Turn right here, then descend in the next elevator. You will now
be on a suspended walkway. Follow this all the way to the bottom to procure
the CRMC-SWORD, and equip this to Chaz straight away.

Go back up and take the path to the left. Turn down at the junction, then
go left and down, then take the junction to the right to acquire the
ANTIDOTE. Return to the main walkway and continue down, right, then down
through a door. In the following passage, go down, then left and descend in
the elevator. Go either left or right (it doesn't matter) and then up
through the door, then go around and speak to Professor Holt to begin a
cut-scene. Everyone should be at least Level 10 by now.

The Professor is fine, as he seems to have been aided by a pink-haired
stranger. She introduces herself as Rika, and explains that they are in a
research facility for genetic engineering, built over a thousand years ago.
Hahn asks if the place is still operational, and Rika replies that it is,
and also that it is not the only one of its kind. There are many such
systems that control the planet's ecology, soil and climate conditions.
The Professor asks why, if that is the case, such problems have occurred
recently. Rika explains that the system has run out of control, and then
suggests you speak to 'Seed' for more information.

Rika and Professor Holt disappear through the door above, so follow them
through. Rika will then introduce you to Seed, the control computer for the
Bio-Plant. The scholars are impressed. Seed warns the party that the
monster outbreak was caused here and that if things are left to continue,
the planet may be destroyed. Alys suggests they shut down the system, but
Hahn is dubious about the problems this may cause for the planet. Gryz then
points out, quite wisely, that no system is better than one that is ruining
everything. Chaz notes that to do that will require each system being shut
down, but Rika cuts it by saying that only the control system, Nurvus, must
be turned off.

Seed tells the group that in order to shut down Nurvus they will need to
rescue Demi, an android, who is being held hostage by Zio at Zio's Fort.
This just so happens to be the castle beyond the quicksand near Mile. Alys
is up for it, and Gryz is glad to hear that she's also up for getting rid
of Zio. Seed asks them to take Rika along, and it turns out that she is
Seed's child, an artificial lifeform based on a prototype from before the
'Great Collapse'. Alys agrees, and Rika seems excited about seeing the
outside world. Professor Holt decides to go to academy to let them know
what is happening, and then everyone leaves the Bio-Plant.

Seed knows that he must stem the outbreak of monsters, and so he shuts
himself down. Outside, Rika is overjoyed with all the new sensations. Then,
suddenly, the mountain above Zema explodes. The Bio-Plant is destroyed.

Rika joins the party (Level 1)
ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ

Rika starts at a disadvantage, but gains Levels very quickly. She is an
agile and fairly strong character, and should go after everyone except Hahn
in the marching order.

Speak to the guy near the entrance and he will oddly compliment Alys before
running off. Now, go across the bridge to the left and then go into the
northern-most house on the left side of town. This is Alys' house, so you
can rest here for free. After that, it's time to go shopping again. There
are two shopping areas in Aiedo - a large market complex in the centre of
town, and an equipment store near the Hunters' Guild. The best equipment
can be found at the stores just south of the Hunters' Guild, so head south
then east across the bridge, then go up and right once you pass the wall.

The best things to buy are one CRMC-KNIFE for Hahn, a STRUGGL-AX for Gryz,
two SABER-CLAWs for Rika, two CRMC-HELMs for Chaz and Gryz, and three
CRMC-MAILs for Chaz, Alys and Rika. This will be very expensive, totalling
24300 Mesetas, although this price will be reduced to 19865 by selling the
TITN-CROWN, TITN-SWORD, TITNDAGGER, BROAD-AXE, two CLAWS, two TITN-HELMS,
two TITN-MAILs and the GRPT-SUIT. As you will have some other things to do
before setting off on the next part of the journey to Zio's Fort, buy what
you can now and wait until later to get the rest. You may have noticed that
to fully optimize the party's equipment you could buy another CRMC-KNIFE
and a CRMC-MAIL, but you will get these for free in a little while.

Outside the shops, head north and enter the Hunters' Guild. This is where
hunters all over the land go to find work and earn money. There are eight
jobs that you can take from here throughout the game, but only one will be
available at the moment. If you wish, you can sign up for this job. See
'7.1.1. The Ranch Owner' for more details.

Before leaving the Hunters' Guild, head to the very east side of the
building then go up the right-most door. You will be in a small theatre
with a stage occupying the top part of the room. Approach the stage to
watch a short dance if you wish, then walk through the door on the left.
Continue through the next left door, then pass to the left above the
receptionist and into the far left room. Pick up the 1000 MST and a TRIMATE
from the top-left corner, then go back.

Another thing you can do while you are in this area is visit the wreckage
of a crashed ship. Exit Aiedo and head a little east and then north. A
little further than the village of Nalya you will see a pile of junk on the
ground. Make sure that Rika is at least Level 4, then enter this area.

You are in some sort of ruined building from the same era as the Bio-Plant.
Head up and then left, and then up again at the turning. Go left at the
next junction then up towards the door. Instead of going through the door,
however, turn right and follow the path down and right to go through the
next door. Collect the CRMCSHIELD and 1500 MST from this room then go back
to the first door again, this time heading through it.

Go up and take the turning on the left. Continue left, picking up the
DIMATE from the alcove along the way, then head upwards and take the
elevator to the floor below. Follow the walkway all the way to the left,
then turn upwards and acquire the CRMC-KNIFE at the junction. Equip this
to Hahn, replacing his TITNDAGGER. Turn right, then go up all the way to
the door, ignoring the path on the left. Go in and retrieve the CRMC-MAIL,
which you should equip to Gryz. Return to the walkway on the left that you
passed a moment ago, and follow this left then up and then left again
before descending in the elevator.

Head left along this passage and then go up and through the door. Continue
up along the walkway, and then all the way to the left and then upwards at
the corner. Go through the door, along the corridor, then through the next
door. Go up and you will see an array of panels. Examine them, and Rika
will point out that she knows what it is, and begin fiddling with the
controls. She breaks the security code, switches on the computer, and
begins a short cut-scene.

An image of some biospheres appears, and Rika says that they are on a ship
that crashed here from Parma a thousand years ago. Just before the
satellite Gaira crashed into Parma in AW 1284, causing it to explode, the
ship had escaped with some Parmanians. Unfortunately, the ship was caught
in Motavia's orbit, and while trapped in space all of it's passengers died.
As the orbit decayed, the ship grew closer and closer to the planet, until
it finally crashed. Rika then finds out that there were, in fact, dozens of
ships that escaped from Parma. Some of them landed on Motavia, some on a
planet called Dezolis, and the others just disappeared into space.

Once you have control again, you may as well leave. Use an ESCAPIPE or
HINAS if you wish. Now, you'll want to get Chaz, Alys, Hahn and Gryz up to
at least Level 12 and Rika to at least Level 9. Pop into Nalya and have a
look around if you wish. This will be useful if you ever want to teleport
here later. Once your done, return to Aiedo to pick any remaining equipment
and fully restore yourselves. When ready, leave Aiedo and go through the
trees to the north to enter the cave behind.

Most people in this village seem to be either under the evil spell of Zio,
or mortally afraid of him (the ruin you passed on the way here being a
village before he came along). There is a church dedicated to him here, and
a possessed man convulsing in front of it. You won't find much of any value
in terms of information here, but there is a weapon worth getting.
Go to the very bottom of town and step just outside the gate. Head to the
left and then up, hugging the wall. Take the entrance to the left, and
enter the right-hand building. There is an opened chest in here, and the
other one contains a LASRSLASHR, which you should give to Alys.

Rest at the Inn if you like, and purchase any more supplies you need, then
leave Kadary. Wander around outside, returning when you need to, until you
have got everyone in the party up to at least Level 14, preferably Chaz and
Gryz up to Level 15. If you have completed the first Hunters' Guild job,
you should already be well on the way to achieving this. Once you have
finished, fully restore your party before going south to Zio's Fort. Save
and then enter.

Head up through the entrance corridor, and you will see a yellow forcefield
protecting the door to a room in the centre of this large chamber. You can
examine this 'invisible' barrier if you wish, but there is no way to get
past it at this stage. Walk to the left or right around this structure and
through the door at the top. There are two staircases here. The one on the
right doesn't lead to anything at all, so take the one on the left.

Head left and down, then turn upwards and take the staircase down to grab
2000 MST. Return up the stairs, then continue down the passage and turn
left. Drop down the large black hole here, then pick up the MOON-DEW from
the right side of the room. Exit the fort through the door on the left,
then go back into Zio's Fort and make your way back through until you are
back at the hole again. Take the stairs to the left.

Head through the opening to the right and walk through the corridor that
follows. When you are out, walk up to the top of the room and collect the
LASR-SWORD. Equip this to Chaz, then return through the corridor and go
back down the stairs.

Head right, around the bottom side of the hole, then take the thin passage
to the right. Don't bother taking the path below you, as there is nothing
there. Continue along the thin passage, ignoring the hole and the stairs
for the moment, and continue around them and down the passage. Take the
stairs at the very bottom, and then head up to obtain a DIMATE. Go back up
the stairs and up along the corridor, then drop down the hole you passed
a little while ago. Retrieve the LASRBARRIR from the left, then exit the
castle through the door on the right.

Go back to Kadary and rest up, then save and re-enter Zio's Fort. Return
all the way upstairs and back round to the hole you just dropped down, and
ascend the stairs to the right. Take the door to the left and follow the
corridor that follows until you are in another chamber. Pick up the
LASR-CLAW from the top of the room and equip it to Rika, then head down
and around to the left. Walk up the central passage until you are standing
in front of the dark-robed man. Heal up anyone who needs it, then address
the man to learn that his name his Juza and that you will need to get past
him if you intend to see Zio. A battle then ensues.

This guy is pretty tough compared to what you have faced so far. In the
first round, have Alys use VORTEX, Chaz use CROSSCUT, Hahn use WAT, Gryz
use WAR CRY and Rika use DBLSLASH. This will inflict a fair amount of
damage and increase Gryz's ATK for the rounds to come. In the rounds that
follow, use the same attack strategy. Let Gryz just attack each round, and
Chaz use TSU if he runs out of CROSSCUT.

Juza only uses magic, so have Hahn or Rika heal when a character is hit by
a targeted spell. If Juza uses ZAN, CORROSION or FORCEFLASH (especially the
latter), it may be best to let both of them heal, and maybe even get Chaz
to lend a hand if necessary. Although Gryz has the most HP at this time,
give him priority over other characters as he will take the most damage
from Juza. If you are unlucky and one of your characters falls in this
battle, get a fast character to use the MOON-DEW and a slower one to follow
this up with GIRES or a DIMATE. This should restore them back to a decent
level of health.

If you keep the pressure on Juza, and heal when necessary, this battle
shouldn't last more than four or five rounds.

After you defeat Juza, a staircase will appear to the left. Heal up if you
need to (you're not out yet), then ascend the stairs. Go down and around to
the right, and take the next set of stairs up to the top floor. Remove all
of Alys' and Hahn's equipment (you'll see why in a little while), then head
up and approach the unusual-looking object to begin a cut-scene.

Rika identifies the being as Demi, the android you've been looking for.
Alys cuts her free, and then introduces herself. Demi is very grateful, and
uses her Medical Power to heal the party before telling them that she is
responsible for controlling Nurvus. While Gryz and Hahn are awed by her
human likeness, Alys asks if Demi can stop Nurvus from supplying energy to
the system. Demi begins to explain that she had already tried to do so,
when she is interrupted by an unseen voice. Zio appears in his menacing
way, and accuses the group of breaking into his property. Chaz suggests
that Zio looks at his own actions before judging others, although Zio
doesn't seem to see anything wrong with what he has done. He taunts Gryz
a little, before Alys points out that if Zio continues to do as he has
done then the whole of Motavia could be destroyed. Zio seems pleased with
this, pointing out that his god wants there to be no life in Algo, and then
he sees red. He makes a short speech, vowing to destroy them all in the
name of his god, Dark Force, and begins another battle.

You will not win this fight, and you are not meant to. Before you get a
chance to do anything, Zio will use MAG.BARRIR, reducing any magical damage
you inflict to 1 (you won't even hit him with regular attacks).

The simplest way to get through the battle is to let everyone attack each
round (use Macro A if you haven't changed it). In the first round, Zio will
set his hands on fire (no effect), and do nothing in the second round. In
the round that follows he will summon NIGHTMARE, then use BLACK WAVE on
Chaz in the round after that. The battle ends abruptly with a cut-scene.

The party meet Saya in Krup, and take Alys to a bed at the Inn. Her
condition has not improved. Chaz notes that Zio was unlike anything he has

force. Demi explains that Zio built his fort upon Nurvus, and Chaz realises
that Nurvus must be behind the barrier they couldn't cross before. Alys
then mentions that Rune may be able to help, pointing out that there is no
way they can get past Zio's magical barrier with what they have now. Rika
asks who Rune is, and Chaz replies with his opinion, reluctantly agreeing
that they may need his help after all. As Rune went off with Grandfather
