Star Trek: The Next Generation: Echoes From the Past
Review by naga87
"This game is pretty overlooked. I am not even a fan of the series, and I still like it."
Even though I am not a fan, I watched a few eps STTNG when I was a kid around 1992-1996 I think when I was bored or when the TV was just turned there for whatever reason. Anyway, I played a SNES port of this game, and it was under another name. What was interesting is that it had the wrong game label on it. It was for the game "Saturday Night Slammasters". The game was used, and I got it for free from a used game company in those days. I played the game, and I fell in love with it. It brings back memories of the quiet atmosphere of that game. Now all that has lead me to the sega version of this game. When I played this game I found out that the SNES version of this game has a lot of things missing from this Sega edition of this game. I will get to that when I get around to doing a interview for that game. Now on to the review for this one.
Graphics 8/10
You can't ask for better. Everyone in the ship look like they do in the series. Speaking of the ship, everything looks nice in the inside. The computers look like they should, and what is cool is that when someone is hailing you, you can see that little light blinking on the ships controls on the helm of the ship. Even the pictures of people you contact look true to who they are. As for the away missions, everything looks like they should, and there nothing much to say about it.
Sound/Music 8/10
The tunes on this game are pretty good. Even the Star Trek theme is in there. I liked the battle theme that plays when you confront someone that wants to fight or wants diplomacy with you. It kinda sounds like a porn theme, but its catchy at the same time. I rip the theme from the game at one time lol, and had it recored to play for more than 7 minutes. All the other music in this game is nice, and it similar to the SNES version as well. The sounds are decent, but better when your in a ship battle. The boom boom sounds you make when you attack a ship, and the phaser sound is satisfying to hear as well. Well done.
Gameplay 9/10 and 7/10 for Away Missions.
The truth! Why I like this game. Everything is so great here! I can go to any planet on the star map, yet can't enter them unless its part of the storyline, look up information about the ship, races, people, enemy ships, planets, and more on the ship's computer. When traveling to planets, randomly a ship comes up to you, and the alarm goes off. At this time the catchy battle theme plays. Once you answer to the hail the other ship's captain will talk to you. Most of the time its just the Romulan wanting to peaceful get past for whatever reason or there is some other races out there that are more aggressive, and plain as day want you to get out of there way. What is cool is that you can avoid a battle by being nice and diplomatic toward them or be a hard ass, and speak aggressively towards them.
If you choose to be an hard ass a.k.a the Paladin of the Neutral Zone, prepare to fight. You will see that the other ship turns around, and starts to fire at you. This is when you quickly have to scroll over to tactical which is under the computer. In this mode you fight it out with the other ship. You shoot protons at them, and use your phasers on them when in close range. If you played the SNES version before this one, be prepared to be thrown off in this mode since the battle mode is shaky (literally) in this mode. You will get used to it though. The away missions are very hard, and I had to cheat to get through them. I wish they made it a bit easy on the mind.
Final thoughts
I say anyone should try out this game. Even if your not a fan, it would not hurt.
