Ringside Angel

"A strange, but fun wrestling game for genesis"
This game was released for the Sega Genesis (known as Mega Drive in japan) back in 1990 for japan only, based on a japanese woman wrestler named Cuty Suzuki. At this time japanese women's wrestling was getting really popular that they released video games on some consoles. They made several for the Super Famicom, some which played really good. This one was the only one released for the Sega Genesis. Cuty Suzuki was starting to get popular at the time, but it was only because of her looks than her wrestling ability that got her a big push. I don't know if this game was intended for teenage boys and men or everyone though.
Graphics 6/10
The graphics by todays standards look really outdated, not many people would give this game a second look. The developers did however put effort to making this game look and feel like a wrestling game. Cuty Suzuki is the only real wrestler in the game while the other women are fictional, but could be based on real ones as well. Everything is well animated, when the women run, bounce of the ropes, or even body slam each other it looks watching wrestling on tv, well almost. On the screen you have your two women going against each other. There is also a referee present during the match counting a pin or calling a submission and your commentators are on the top right corner of the screen calling every move. The wrestlers photos on the top center of the screen represent their status, if weakened they will look tired and sweating. If you have the momentum your wrestler will look happy and confident. There is also a meter present which you build by executing moves and keep the momentum, if you get beaten, dominated, miss a top rope move or get countered then it goes out. All of the women you choose on the game look almost alike except in the difference of the color of the revealing swimsuit and hair. One interesting aspect of the game is when both wrestlers are far away from each other the screen changed to split screen mode, just like in the Dragon ball Z fighting games.
Controls 7/10
The controls take a little time to get used to and get a little sluggish, but it isn't hard to get the hang of it since the sega controller only has three buttons to press and the cross key. The A button is used for punches, pin the opponent when she is down and scoop slam the opponent when you grapple. The B button is used to kick, raise the opponent when she is on the floor, and do a piledriver when grappling each other. You can also press the up and down keys with the A or B button to do varied moves like the vertical suplex or torture rack. However, to pull off some of those moves your opponent has to be weakened and your meter has to be full.
Gameplay 5/10
There are only four modes in this game and all of them are singles matches. That wont make this game as fun since it doesn't have any replay value. When you play one player mode you compete in five tournaments to win a trophy from each one. When you win each tournament a girl in a bunny suit comes and gives you a trophy. This game was Rumble Roses at its time with the girls wearing revealing outfits and the bunny suit girl that appears on the menu screen. Anyway, you can choose two player mode and go against a friend, Battles mode is one player against the AL in non tournament mode and Watch mode is just AL vs AL just to see the various moves.
Sound 4/10
The sound isn't good, but maybe people could tolerate it more than me. The music is acceptable and not repetitive at all. The referee only talks when he counts a pinfall and you hear the crowd cheer and whistle. The sound effects consist of strange washing machine or fart sounds. You hear them all of the time when you punch, kick or do a submission. That is probably all you would hear in this game.
Overall if you are a fan of japanese women's wrestling or Cuty Suzuki then you should get it to play it or get it as a collectible since this game is really old.
