Warriors of the Eternal Sun
Review by Martin
"Though some flaws, a great game overall."
In Dungeons and Dragons Warriors of the Eternal Sun, TSR made a good replica of D&D on the Genesis. Any D&D pen and paper fan, or any RPG fan would love this game.
Dungeons and Dragons WOTES is a RPG Fantasy. You are set in the middle ages, and your castle is under siege by goblins. Your king knows that your defenses can not last much longer. Just as you are praying to God for some sort of escape, it is known that your castle and all its inhabitants will pass from the world that you know very soon. Suddenly, the world trembles, and man goblin and everything else is sucked into a different dimension.
You are now in a valley with impossibly high walls. Your guards are once again very busy trying to protect the castle, and the king cannot afford to send them out. So he asks you to construct a party of people to explore your new world.
You can select different classes to use in your party. Though the classes vary from actual AD&D, they are similar (like elf is a class instead of race) you also roll to get your stats. This is incredibly important in your game. If you keep a bad roll you are doomed to die in this new world.
As you travel throughout the world, you encounter many past civilizations of man like the Oltec, and the Azcans. Also the ever burning sun seems to have an effect on the people, but there must also be something more than that. Something truly evil that is driving the fair people of your castle mad. You will journey throughout the valley, leave the valley through caves, finding lizardmen, and a civilization which has constructed complex pyramids. There are also extra caves which are not necessary but add a lot to the game.
The gameplay is great, the graphics are good for an AD&D game of its time, the plot is good, but there is a lack in the amount of weapons and armor, though the optional caves and other sidequests can make the game a lot of fun. The only problem is that its relatively short, and pretty easy. Also there is no real main battle. It is pretty difficult to beat the game though. Especially without maps. Having maps ruins the fun of the game. I love the 2 views (overhead in the outer world, and first person in the underground. These are stunning for a game from 1992.)
Favorite Aspects of Game:
The gameplay, plot, and graphics.
Drawbacks of Game:
Lack of weapons and gameplay. Also, the fact that most copies of the game have lost battery backup by now.
